Book Paul Harris and the Birth of Rotary

Download or read book Paul Harris and the Birth of Rotary written by Fred A. Carvin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2011-11-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1905, Paul Harris started a movement that today is one of the world's premiere service organizations. His creation, Rotary International has quite literally touched the lives of hundreds of millions of people in its global quest to make a difference.Yet few people, both inside and outside of Rotary know much about Paul Harris or how his ground-breaking club developed. This number includes a majority of current Rotarians who have little knowledge or understanding about the man who started it all. For over a century, the relevant facts about his life and motivations have been clouded by myths and misconceptions. Now, with the discovery of hundreds of never before published letters, documents and exclusive archival sources, a better comprehension of the man and his times has emerged. This latest material gives new insight to who Paul Harris was. It provides answers to questions like: How did his early life in rural Wallingford, Vermont help forge his thoughts about Rotary? What role did his parents and grandparents play in developing his later actions? What happened during his college years that affected him for the rest of his life? Who were the men and women that influenced his ideals? When did Rotary and Paul Harris change directions and become more humanitarian? This book offers an in-depth look at how Paul Harris and early Rotary came into existence. It's the story of one man's struggle to find his inner self and how his philosophy changed the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traitor or saviour? Tony Windsor has been called both in his 22-year political career, but never more often than when he supported Julia Gillard's government in 2010. And now he's back. After three years in retirement, Tony Windsor refuses to stand by and watch regional Australia relegated to being taken for granted. In the forthcoming election he will go head to head with the leader of the National Party, Barnaby Joyce in the seat of New England. Windsor's Way reveals Tony's courageous political path—as a young branch member he moved a no-confidence motion against the National Party leader. He conducted a rigorous 17-day assessment period of Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard's promises following the indecisive 2010 election and then seized the opportunities of the subsequent hung parliament. By staying true to his values and beliefs in difficult and challenging times, Tony Windsor has become an emblem of integrity and decency in Australian politics.

Book Constructing Brotherhood

Download or read book Constructing Brotherhood written by Mary Ann Clawson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the persistence of the fraternal form of association in guilds, trade unions, and political associations, as well as in fraternal social organizations, scholars have often ignored its importance as a cultural and social theme. This provocative volume helps to redress that neglect. Tracing the development of fraternalism from early modern western Europe through eighteenth-century Britain to nineteenth-century America, Mary Ann Clawson shows how white males came to use fraternal organizations to resolve troubling questions about relations between the sexes and between classes: American fraternalism in the 1800s created bonds of loyalty across class lines and made gender and race primary categories of collective identity. British men had symbolically become stone masons to express their commitment to the emerging market economy and to the social value of craft labor. Clawson points out that American fraternalism fulfilled similar purposes, as fraternal organizations reconciled individualism and mutuality for many who were discomfited by the conflict of egalitarian principles and capitalist industrial development. Fraternalism's extraordinary appeal rested also on the assertion of masculine solidarity in the face of feminine claims to moral leadership. Nevertheless, visions of solidarity were contradicted when fraternal organizations became increasingly entrepreneurial, seeking to maximize their own growth through systematic marketing of membership. In this urgent chronicle of contemporary immigration, journalist Lauren Markham follows the Flores twins as they make their way across the Rio Grande and the Texas desert, into the hands of immigration authorities, and from there to their estranged older brother in Oakland, CA. Soon these unaccompanied minors are navigating school in a new language, working to pay down their mounting coyote debt, and facing their day in immigration court, while also encountering the triumphs and pitfalls of teenage life with only each other for support.
