Book A Life of James Boswell

Download or read book A Life of James Boswell written by Peter Martin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-30 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Born in Edinburgh, the 'Athens of the North', a Scot who hated living in Scotland and nourished a lifelong love affair with London, Boswell was biographer, journalist, laird, advocate, social lion, incurable rake, lover, life of the party, traveller, steadfast friend, endearing charmer, exhibitionist fool, and drunken sot. In this moving biography, Peter Martin assesses Boswell's literary achievements and uncovers the pulsating and dynamic world he thrived in, from the royal courts and the drawing rooms of fashionable ladies and gentlemen to the fleshpots of London's unsavoury underworld and the chambers of the insane. He also poignantly reveals a man in agony, easily misunderstood, relentlessly plagued by hypochondria or melancholia, buffeted like a straw in the wind by a multitude of anxieties and 'horrible imaginings'."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Boswell (1740–1795), best known as the biographer of Samuel Johnson, was also a lawyer, journalist, diarist, and an insightful chronicler of a pivotal epoch in Western history. This fascinating collection, edited by Paul Tankard, presents a generous and varied selection of Boswell’s journalistic writings, most of which have not been published since the eighteenth century. It offers a new angle on the history of journalism, an idiosyncratic view of literature, politics, and public life in late eighteenth-century Britain, and an original perspective on a complex and engaging literary personality.

Book excerpt: Anthology by leading Boswell biographer - now working on a life of Samuel Johnson - of the best of Boswell's diaries, his account of the great Cham himself, Sam Johnson, and an account of his time in Corsica as well as his obsession with hypochondria. In addition to material about Johnson and their celebrated tour to the Hebrides the lesser known 'An Account of Corsica', records his audacious visit to meet the fabled rebel leader Pasquale Paoli. In modern parlance it was an international bestseller of its day. Martin's astute selection, as in all the best anthologies, will undoubtedly lead the reader to Boswell's work, showing that, as Boswell said of himself: 'I am a composition of an infinite variety of ingredients.'

Book excerpt: Edinburgh-born James Boswell, at twenty-two, kept a daily diary of his eventful second stay in London from 1762 to 1763. This journal, not discovered for more than 150 years, is a deft, frank and artful record of adventures ranging from his vividly recounted love affair with a Covent Garden actress to his first amusingly bruising meeting with Samuel Johnson, to whom Boswell would later become both friend and biographer. The London Journal 1762-63 is a witty, incisive and compellingly candid testament to Boswell's prolific talents.

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson The rising generation is, it may be feared, better acquainted with Macaulay's travesty of Boswell and of Johnson than with the great originals which he so flagrantly traduced. Boswell's book is very long (it contains more than half a million words); large parts of it assume familiarity with Latin; and the beginning of the book is much less attractive than the rest. The present editor, who attacked it at a tender age, was deterred partly by the perplexing mass of Croker's notes, partly also by the long quotations and lists of conjectural attributions; and after wandering for a space in those crepuscular regions, forsook the journey before the sun was up. If any apology is required for making a selection from a work in its nature discontinuous, the authority may be cited of Johnson himself; who was at first angry with Bishop Hurd for publishing a mutilated Cowley, but afterwards relenting allowed that 'there is no impropriety in a man's publishing as much as he chooses of any authour, if he does not put the rest out of the way'. Book excerpt: Prize-winning biographer Leo Damrosch tells the story of “the Club,” a group of extraordinary writers, artists, and thinkers who gathered weekly at a London tavern In 1763, the painter Joshua Reynolds proposed to his friend Samuel Johnson that they invite a few friends to join them every Friday at the Turk’s Head Tavern in London to dine, drink, and talk until midnight. Eventually the group came to include among its members Edmund Burke, Adam Smith, Edward Gibbon, and James Boswell. It was known simply as “the Club.” In this captivating book, Leo Damrosch brings alive a brilliant, competitive, and eccentric cast of characters. With the friendship of the “odd couple” Samuel Johnson and James Boswell at the heart of his narrative, Damrosch conjures up the precarious, exciting, and often brutal world of late eighteenth-century Britain. This is the story of an extraordinary group of people whose ideas helped to shape their age, and our own.

Book Boswell s Edinburgh Journals

Download or read book Boswell s Edinburgh Journals written by Hugh Milne and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Boswell's relish for life, unflinching honesty and wide social contacts make him one of the raciest and most entertaining of all diarists. This is a one-volume edition of the journals he kept while making his living as an advocate in eighteenth-century Edinburgh. Hugh Milne's introduction and notes remove the barriers that time has placed between us and Boswell. The result is a book in which an extraordinary personality lives before us upon the page. Boswell embodied in himself all the extremes and contradictions of his time and place. This was the Edinburgh of the Enlightenment, and among his friends he counted thinkers like David Hume and Adam Smith, and entertained eminent visitors like Dr Johnson. Boswell was alive to every new social or political idea and was interested in all the drama of human life, whether high or low. All Boswell's public and private doings, and his inner debates about religion and the meaning of life, go unedited into his journal. His vivid description of a whole gallery of characters and situations makes its pages compulsively readable.
