Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Defoe's Minor Novels Although Defoe has never been edited as a whole, and is, unless a great change takes place in the habits of English book-buyers, very unlikely to be so, he has had his fair share of partial collections in greater or smaller extent. I am not aware, however, of any attempt to deal with him in the way here proposed. The nearest thing to it is the rather abundant bundle of extracts given in Mr. Arber's English Garner, vol. vii., in which the selections are wholly political. Of such matter I have myself included nothing, the ever famous Shortest Way being reprinted in another volume of this series. The whole of my excerpts here will be from the works of fiction by which Defoe gained his greatest popularity, and in which his unrivalled talents for description and narrative appear. Whether it came out before or after the Journal of the Plague Year, which appeared in March of the same year, cannot be definitely said. Though Mr. Lee accidentally omitted the Due Preparations from the catalogue of Defoe's works prefixed to the first volume of his Daniel Dg'be, there can be little doubt that the book was from Defoe's pen. It was on a subject which we know, from A Journal of the Plague Year, greatly interested him; and portions Of the book deal with incidents mentioned in the better known Journal. Besides, as Mr. Aitken has shown, ' Due Preparations for the Plague is full of Defoe's mannerisms, both in vocabulary and in nar rative method. Neither is an instance of the former; the use of dialogue in the second part, of the latter. There seems to be no good reason for doubting Defoe's authorship. There is no pretence, however, that the manuscript is reproduced exactly. "The original of this story is put into new words," wrote Defoe in his preface, "and the style of the famous lady we here speak of is a little altered..." It has generally been under-stood that this statement of our author was only a fiction to make his book sell; the opinion has never prevailed widely, as in the case of the Memo rs of a Cavalier, that this work was from another hand than Defoe's. True, some of the more ignorant eighteenth-century readers were imposed upon, as Defoe hoped they would be, and Moll Flanders has been accepted by a few people as a real person. A chap-book published in Dublin in 1730, which pretended to supplement Defoe's information about her, her "governess," and her Lancashire husband, stated that she and her husband settled finally in Galway, where she died in April, 1723, seventy-four years old.
