They should have done in addition at least one half year's reading and translating from the German into the English. This book is intended to provide well-graded selections for translating English into German. No pretense is made that the exercises are of a high literary value. Good literature is usually much too difficult for students at this stage of advance; they are still in the realm of drudgery and therefore more or less incapable of enjoying literary excellence. In addition to the exercises contained in the book, students should be asked to write letters and compositions on original subjects, such as "My Autobiography; A Picnic; My Christmas Vacation; etc." The notes and vocabulary which are added are merely suggestive. They can not and ought not take the place of a grammar and a dictionary. The last selection in the book, entitled Leberecht Huhnchen, translated from the German of H. Seidel by Miss Anna Knight, appeared in the Outlook and is here reproduced (with notes added) by special permission, for which the compilers hearty thanks are hereby expressed.
