Book Selections for French Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections for French Composition Classic Reprint written by Charles Hall Grandgent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections for French Composition This book was written in response to a general demand for an easy but comprehensive manual that could be used both in colleges and in schools. Its leading characteristic, as compared with similar works, is the nature of the English texts, which though I have tried to make them sufficiently idiomatic - are all so constructed that, when translated, they will be real French, and not English written with French words. Parts I. And II. Follow the imitative method; the others are taken from French sources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Those in the Second Part are preceded by a Vocabulary only. The Rules are thirty-eight in number. These relate to the position which certain English words should occupy in French, the manner of translating them, and the way of rendering certain tournures which, though common in English, are not admissible in French. Book French Prose Composition Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Prose Composition While a considerable number of the selections are original, the authors have made use of extracts from French writers, changing the original text so as better to illustrate grammatical rules. For this reason and for others which will suggest themselves to teachers, it has been thought inadvisable to give the names of the authors from whom the selections are taken. Book Exercises in French Composition for Schools and Colleges Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exercises in French Composition for Schools and Colleges Classic Reprint written by William Koren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in French Composition for Schools and Colleges Much attention is paid to idiomatic expressions, and repeti tion of important phrases is frequent. The selections need not be taken up in the order in which they are printed. The teacher is the best judge of the needs of his class. In Parts III and IV, for instance, the easy selec tions may be used with beginners, while for more advanced students they may be found suitable for sight translation. The English paraphrases are included in the english-french vocabulary, and may be used independently of the French text if the teacher so desires. The author would, however, strongly recommend a very careful study of the French text before beginning the translation of the paraphrases. Parts I and II, which are largely in dialogue form, are suit able for drill in conversation. The selections in French may also be used, by teachers who wish to reduce the translation of English into French to a minimum, for the purpose of hav ing the students write resumes of them in French, and for writing definitions of new words and idioms in French. In Part IV will be found a brief list of subjects for original composition. The teacher can easily add to this list, suiting the subjects and outlines to his needs. It is necessary to give the students an outline of the theme in order to prevent a too great use of words and phrases already familiar. It is pos sible to begin quite early with original composition, and it is a very useful and interesting change from the ordinary trans lation. In the Appendix has been added a number of lessons for the purpose of giving a brief review of the principal rules of syntax. Not finding any suitable French selection, the author has ventured to offer the original French of Part I, for which he bespeaks the indulgence of his fellow-teachers, - stet pro ratione voluntas. It is a pleasure to record my indebtedness for valuable sug gestions received from Professors W. U. Vreeland and R. Michaud, and to thank especially Dr. C. E. Mathews for the generous assistance he has given me by very carefully read ing both the manuscript and the proof. Book Exercises in French Syntax and Composition

Download or read book Exercises in French Syntax and Composition written by Jeanne Marie Bouvet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in French Syntax and Composition: With Notes and Vocabulary Part II. Consists of interesting selections for connected trans lation, taken from French sources and relating to French topics, chiefly historical, biographical, and literary. The style of these selections, however, is neither stiff nor formal, as is too apt to be the case with composition work on these subjects. My aim has'not been to impose upon the pupil a polish and an elegance Of expression which would be unnatural to him if he were using his own tongue, but to furnish him with ordinary, though correct and idiomatic, English, so constructed that, with the aids given, it might readily be turned into good French. The size and character of the vocabulary will show that quite a variety of styles has been exemplified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intermediate French: Translation and Composition The following selections have been arranged with a view to giving the student practice in the translation of passages that fall in difficulty between the descriptive passages of the elemen tary examinations for college and the more difficult passages of the essayist and moralizer. They will be found to cover a broad field of matter that is beyond the ordinary text-book or reader, and will consequently tend to familiarize the student with matter and style that might otherwise be overlooked or inaccessible in the ordinary preparation for college. The major ity of the passages will be found practical for the final prepa ration for elementary examinations, while the more difficult ones may be used for the advanced preparation. The exercises in composition, based upon the texts for trans lation, have been found of great value in fixing the vocabulary in the mind of the student, as well as in keeping the more common grammatical constructions constantly before him. They should be written, carefully corrected, and rewritten. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Music The reader who turns to these pages with the idea of finding therein a large and exhaustive account of the composers mentioned, with a technical analysis of their works, will, I fear, be disappointed. My intention has been a far more modest one. The dimensions of this volume would not have allowed me to devote that amount of space to each composer that might be considered due to his merits. The object I have had in view has been to give an account of their lives and to draw attention to the tendencies exhibited in their works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring the Mosaic is a comprehensive intellectual biography of John Porter (1921-1979), author of The Vertical Mosaic (1965), preeminent Canadian sociologist of his time, and one of Canada's most celebrated scholars. In the first biography of this important figure, Rick Helmes-Hayes provides a detailed account of Porter's life and an in-depth assessment of his extensive writings on class, power, educational opportunity, social mobility, and democracy. While assessing Porter's place in the historical development of Canadian social science, Helmes-Hayes also examines the economic, social, political and scholarly circumstances - including the Depression, World War II, post-war reconstruction, the baby boom, and the growth of universities - that contoured Porter's political and academic views. Using extensive archival research, correspondence, and over fifty original interviews with family, colleagues, and friends, Measuring the Mosaic stresses Porter's remarkable contributions as a scholar, academic statesman, senior administrator at Carleton University, and engaged, practical public intellectual.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Le Traducteur, Or Historical, Dramatic, And Miscellaneous Selections From The Best French Writers: On A Plan Calculated To Render Reading And Translation Peculiarly Serviceable In Acquiring The French Language IN the study of a living language, the object chiefly in view is, to speak it, which to be accomplished, presupposes the acquirement of a' good pronunciation, of facility in reading, of grammatical propriety in writing, of a c0pious stock of words, but, above all, and what perhaps is attended with the greatest diflicnlty except in the country where the language is spoken, of a readiness of ear to catch the words and their meanings, when the language is uttered by a native With the usual rapidity of common discourse. Now reading and translation may be rendered particularly conducive to the attainment of these requisites, by pursuing a course similar to the following: in laying down which, the author wishes to be understood, not as dictating either to masters or learners, but as furnishing a few further hints of the plan and objects of his work.
