Download or read book Recent Progress in General Topology III written by K.P. Hart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents surveys describing recent developments in most of the primary subfields of General Topology, and its applications to Algebra and Analysis during the last decade, following the previous editions (North Holland, 1992 and 2002). The book was prepared in connection with the Prague Topological Symposium, held in 2011. During the last 10 years the focus in General Topology changed and therefore the selection of topics differs from that chosen in 2002. The following areas experienced significant developments: Fractals, Coarse Geometry/Topology, Dimension Theory, Set Theoretic Topology and Dynamical Systems.
Download or read book Set Theory and Its Applications written by Liljana Babinkostova and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of several survey and research papers covering a wide range of topics in active areas of set theory and set theoretic topology. Some of the articles present, for the first time in print, knowledge that has been around for several years and known intimately to only a few experts. The surveys bring the reader up to date on the latest information in several areas that have been surveyed a decade or more ago. Topics covered in the volume include combinatorial and descriptive set theory, determinacy, iterated forcing, Ramsey theory, selection principles, set-theoretic topology, and universality, among others. Graduate students and researchers in logic, especially set theory, descriptive set theory, and set-theoretic topology, will find this book to be a very valuable reference.

Download or read book A Cp Theory Problem Book written by Vladimir V. Tkachuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume in Vladimir Tkachuk's series on Cp-theory gives reasonably complete coverage of the theory of functional equivalencies through 500 carefully selected problems and exercises. By systematically introducing each of the major topics of Cp-theory, the book is intended to bring a dedicated reader from basic topological principles to the frontiers of modern research. The book presents complete and up-to-date information on the preservation of topological properties by homeomorphisms of function spaces. An exhaustive theory of t-equivalent, u-equivalent and l-equivalent spaces is developed from scratch. The reader will also find introductions to the theory of uniform spaces, the theory of locally convex spaces, as well as the theory of inverse systems and dimension theory. Moreover, the inclusion of Kolmogorov's solution of Hilbert's Problem 13 is included as it is needed for the presentation of the theory of l-equivalent spaces. This volume contains the most important classical results on functional equivalencies, in particular, Gul'ko and Khmyleva's example of non-preservation of compactness by t-equivalence, Okunev's method of constructing l-equivalent spaces and the theorem of Marciszewski and Pelant on u-invariance of absolute Borel sets.

Download or read book The Structure of the Real Line written by Lev Bukovský and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid development of set theory in the last fifty years, mainly by obtaining plenty of independence results, strongly influenced an understanding of the structure of the real line. This book is devoted to the study of the real line and its subsets taking into account the recent results of set theory. Whenever possible the presentation is done without the full axiom of choice. Since the book is intended to be self-contained, all necessary results of set theory, topology, measure theory, and descriptive set theory are revisited with the purpose of eliminating superfluous use of an axiom of choice. The duality of measure and category is studied in a detailed manner. Several statements pertaining to properties of the real line are shown to be undecidable in set theory. The metamathematics behind set theory is shortly explained in the appendix. Each section contains a series of exercises with additional results.
Download or read book Centenary of the Borel Conjecture written by Marion Scheepers and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borel's Conjecture entered the mathematics arena in 1919 as an innocuous remark about sets of real numbers in the context of a new covering property introduced by Émile Borel. In the 100 years since, this conjecture has led to a remarkably rich adventure of discovery in mathematics, producing independent results and the discovery of countable support iterated forcing, developments in infinitary game theory, deep connections with infinitary Ramsey Theory, and significant impact on the study of topological groups and topological covering properties. The papers in this volume present a broad introduction to the frontiers of research that has been spurred on by Borel's 1919 conjecture and identify fundamental unanswered research problems in the field. Philosophers of science and historians of mathematics can glean from this collection some of the typical trends in the discovery, innovation, and development of mathematical theories.
Download or read book Handbook of Set Theoretic Topology written by K. Kunen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 1282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook is an introduction to set-theoretic topology for students in the field and for researchers in other areas for whom results in set-theoretic topology may be relevant. The aim of the editors has been to make it as self-contained as possible without repeating material which can easily be found in standard texts. The Handbook contains detailed proofs of core results, and references to the literature for peripheral results where space was insufficient. Included are many open problems of current interest. In general, the articles may be read in any order. In a few cases they occur in pairs, with the first one giving an elementary treatment of a subject and the second one more advanced results. These pairs are: Hodel and Juhász on cardinal functions; Roitman and Abraham-Todorčević on S- and L-spaces; Weiss and Baumgartner on versions of Martin's axiom; and Vaughan and Stephenson on compactness properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numbers imitate space, which is of such a di?erent nature —Blaise Pascal It is fair to date the study of the foundation of mathematics back to the ancient Greeks. The urge to understand and systematize the mathematics of the time led Euclid to postulate axioms in an early attempt to put geometry on a ?rm footing. With roots in the Elements, the distinctive methodology of mathematics has become proof. Inevitably two questions arise: What are proofs? and What assumptions are proofs based on? The ?rst question, traditionally an internal question of the ?eld of logic, was also wrestled with in antiquity. Aristotle gave his famous syllogistic s- tems, and the Stoics had a nascent propositional logic. This study continued with ?ts and starts, through Boethius, the Arabs and the medieval logicians in Paris and London. The early germs of logic emerged in the context of philosophy and theology. The development of analytic geometry, as exempli?ed by Descartes, ill- tratedoneofthedi?cultiesinherentinfoundingmathematics. Itisclassically phrased as the question ofhow one reconciles the arithmetic with the geom- ric. Arenumbers onetypeofthingand geometricobjectsanother? Whatare the relationships between these two types of objects? How can they interact? Discovery of new types of mathematical objects, such as imaginary numbers and, much later, formal objects such as free groups and formal power series make the problem of ?nding a common playing ?eld for all of mathematics importunate. Several pressures made foundational issues urgent in the 19th century.
