Book Selecting Instructional Materials

Download or read book Selecting Instructional Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-12-17 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Science Education Standards set broad content goals for teaching grades K-12. For science teaching programs to achieve these goalsâ€"indeed, for science teaching to be most effectiveâ€"teachers and students need textbooks, lab kits, videos, and other materials that are clear, accurate, and help students achieve the goals set by the standards. Selecting Instructional Materials provides a rigorously field-tested procedure to help education decisionmakers evaluate and choose materials for the science classroom. The recommended procedure is unique, adaptable to local needs, and realistic given the time and money limitations typical to school districts. This volume includes a guide outlining the entire process for school district facilitators, and provides review instruments for each step. It critically reviews the current selection process for science teaching materialsâ€"in the 20 states where the state board of education sets forth a recommended list and in the 30 states where materials are selected entirely by local decisionmakers. Selecting Instructional Materials explores how purchasing decisions are influenced by parent attitudes, political considerations, and the marketing skills of those who produce and sell science teaching materials. It will be indispensable to state and local education decisionmakers, science program administrators and teachers, and science education advocates.

Book Science Teaching Reconsidered

Download or read book Science Teaching Reconsidered written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-12 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective science teaching requires creativity, imagination, and innovation. In light of concerns about American science literacy, scientists and educators have struggled to teach this discipline more effectively. Science Teaching Reconsidered provides undergraduate science educators with a path to understanding students, accommodating their individual differences, and helping them grasp the methodsâ€"and the wonderâ€"of science. What impact does teaching style have? How do I plan a course curriculum? How do I make lectures, classes, and laboratories more effective? How can I tell what students are thinking? Why don't they understand? This handbook provides productive approaches to these and other questions. Written by scientists who are also educators, the handbook offers suggestions for having a greater impact in the classroom and provides resources for further research.

Book Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science

Download or read book Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science written by National Academy of Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-05-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today many school students are shielded from one of the most important concepts in modern science: evolution. In engaging and conversational style, Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science provides a well-structured framework for understanding and teaching evolution. Written for teachers, parents, and community officials as well as scientists and educators, this book describes how evolution reveals both the great diversity and similarity among the Earth's organisms; it explores how scientists approach the question of evolution; and it illustrates the nature of science as a way of knowing about the natural world. In addition, the book provides answers to frequently asked questions to help readers understand many of the issues and misconceptions about evolution. The book includes sample activities for teaching about evolution and the nature of science. For example, the book includes activities that investigate fossil footprints and population growth that teachers of science can use to introduce principles of evolution. Background information, materials, and step-by-step presentations are provided for each activity. In addition, this volume: Presents the evidence for evolution, including how evolution can be observed today. Explains the nature of science through a variety of examples. Describes how science differs from other human endeavors and why evolution is one of the best avenues for helping students understand this distinction. Answers frequently asked questions about evolution. Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science builds on the 1996 National Science Education Standards released by the National Research Councilâ€"and offers detailed guidance on how to evaluate and choose instructional materials that support the standards. Comprehensive and practical, this book brings one of today's educational challenges into focus in a balanced and reasoned discussion. It will be of special interest to teachers of science, school administrators, and interested members of the community.

Book Design Selection and Implementation of Instructional Materials for the Next Generation Science Standards

Download or read book Design Selection and Implementation of Instructional Materials for the Next Generation Science Standards written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instructional materials are a key means to achieving the goals of science educationâ€"an enterprise that yields unique and worthwhile benefits to individuals and society. As states and districts move forward with adoption and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or work on improving their instruction to align with A Framework for Kâ€"12 Science Education (the Framework), instructional materials that align with this new vision for science education have emerged as one of the key mechanisms for creating high-quality learning experiences for students. In response to the need for more coordination across the ongoing efforts to support the design and implementation of instructional materials for science education, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a public workshop in June 2017. The workshop focused on the development of instructional materials that reflect the principles of the Framework and the NGSS. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Selecting Educational Equipment and Materials for School and Home

Download or read book Selecting Educational Equipment and Materials for School and Home written by Joan Moyer and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the view that the classroom teacher is the best judge of materials and equipment to meet the needs of particular learning situations, this publication focuses on the selection of equipment and materials for children in group settings. Part I consists of four substantive articles concerning (1) materials selection from the points of view of elementary school principal and classroom teacher; (2) the importance of careful planning in equipping a center or school; (3) the importance of providing teachers with workshops/facilities in which they can prepare instructional materials; and (4) the relative merits of purchasing ready-made and making one's own equipment, and criteria for deciding the issue. Also included in Part I are lists of criteria for selecting single items of equipment and materials as well as packaged instructional materials. Part II suggests educational equipment appropriate for an infant group, a nursery school group, a kindergarten group, early elementary school groups, and later elementary or middle school groups. It is anticipated that parents will also find the information useful, since much of the equipment and materials, particularly for the younger age groups, can be adapted for use in the home and many of the items can be made or "scrounged." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Background information, characteristic features, and the design and effective use of instructional materials centers, are described for librarians, media specialists, teachers, and students. Such centers provide the support needed to ensure that the curricular endeavors of the school are met, through activities involving circulation, coordination, inservice education, consultation, and local production of instructional materials. Use and selection of the instructional materials are coordinated with radio and television programs. Hence, these centers have developed from the concept of traditional library functions into the use of instructional materials centers. Case studies and future trends also are discussed briefly.
