Download or read book On Love written by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these homilies, most of which are previously unpublished, Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, addresses the theme he has celebrated, pondered, and witnessed by his life more than any other: love. For him, love is the vital nucleus of the Church and to serve Christ is above all a question of love: "Peter, do you love me? Feed my sheep" (Jn 21:15–17). Love is also the quest of every human being on the journey toward eternity. He beautifully states, "Christianity is a movement, a journey; it is not a theory, a sum total of doctrine; Christianity is life, it is a vital impetus that carries us toward true life. . . . Someone who has found love can say: I have found life." Arranged by the liturgical seasons of the Church year, the homilies predate the author's pontificate. The earliest dates from 1970 while he was still a professor of theology. Thus, this collection traces the way Joseph Ratzinger has been enamored of the love of God throughout his years of serving the Church.

Download or read book The Marriage of All and Nothing written by Barbara Dent and published by ICS Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Mary Freiburger. Sequel to My Only Friend is Darkness, this new offering of Barbara Dent's writings brings together articles already published elsewhere and forty-one previously unpublished poems. The New Zealand author's intensely personal, experiential style gives "flesh and bones" to the notion of the "dark night of the soul" in this new book. Barbara Dent goes beyond merely generic expositions of that key concept of Carmelite spirituality to craft her own vivid witness, one that speaks always in tones of our times. This she does as a mother, writer, poustinik, and Carmelite secular order member. As she identifies the major events of her adult life in biographical pieces, both by prose and in poetry, she reveals how adept a guide she is to managing the darkness of physical suffering and spiritual progress. The reader will appreciate all the attention she pays, in line with modern renewal movements, to the resurrection as an integral part of spiritual development.

Download or read book The Selected Writings of Pierre Hadot written by Pierre Hadot and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of writings from Pierre Hadot (1992-2010) presents, for the first time, previously unreleased and in some cases untranslated materials from one of the world's most prominent classical philosophers and historians of thought. As a passionate proponent of philosophy as a 'way of life' (most powerfully communicated in the life of Socrates), Pierre Hadot rejuvenated interest in the ancient philosophers and developed a philosophy based on their work which is peculiarly contemporary. His radical recasting of philosophy in the West was both provocative and substantial. Indeed, Michel Foucault cites Pierre Hadot as a major influence on his work. This beautifully written, lucid collection of writings will not only be of interest to historians, classicists and philosophers but also those interested in nourishing, as Pierre Hadot himself might have put it, a 'spiritual life'.

Download or read book Theatine Spirituality written by William V. Hudon and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Classics series, which has inspired many less-successful imitations over the years, has fulfilled its promise and given us an invaluable resource of the soul." The Catholic Historical Review Theatine Spirituality: Selected Writings translated, edited and with an introduction and notes by William V. Hudon preface by Gigliola Fragnito "I remind you that even all the saints are unable to make you as beloved by Christ as you yourself are able. Will to be so, and if you wish Christ to love you and help you, then love Him, direct your will toward pleasing Him always, and never doubt that even if you are abandoned by all the saints and by all creatures, He will always help you in your need." Gaetano da Thiene to Elisabetta Porto, 10 July 1522 The Theatine order of clerics regular was founded in 1524 by four members of the roman branch of the famous Oratory of Divine Love: St. Gaetano da Thiene, Gian Pietro Carafa, Bonifacio de' Colli and Paolo Consiglieri. The history of the order possesses great significance for the larger Tridentine reformation in Italy. Theatine charitable work, especially among the sick and poor, developed out of the context of the Oratory and was propelled by the same renewed zeal that animated the religious and social service activities of old and new orders and congregations after the Council of Trent. Numerous Theatines held influential positions in the ecclesiastical hierarchy, the most famous (and infamous) of which was Carafa, who served as the hated and intransigent Pope Paul IV between 1555 and 1559. Early Theatines wrote spiritual literature that arguably represents the most significant accomplishment of the order. Gaetano composed letters seeking as well as giving advice on the spiritual life that reveal not only his own devotional interests, but also those of his fellow Theatines, in addition to those of his mostly female correspondents. His letters appear here for the first time in English. Lorenzo Scupoli wrote one of the classics of post-Tridentine spiritual literature, Il combattimento spirituale (The Spiritual Combat). The text has been published in numerous editions and many languages since it originally appeared in 1589. In reality, it has been over-translated: reshaped and adapted for audiences far larger than the convent of nuns for which Scupoli intended it. His most important works appear here in a translation that seeks to return them to their proper context and to render them and their author more comprehensible. This volume also includes Carafa's primitive Rule for the Theatine order in a new translation. translated, edited and with an introduction and notes by William V.
