Book Selected Topics from Neurochemistry

Download or read book Selected Topics from Neurochemistry written by Neville N. Osborne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains up-dated versions of articles which proved very popular when first published in Neurochemistry International. The articles draw attention to developments in a specific field perhaps unfamiliar to the reader, collating observations from a wide area which seem to point in a new direction, giving the author's personal view on a controversial topic, or directing soundly based criticism at some widely held dogma or widely used technique in the neurosciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of the neurosciences is one of the most rapidly growing in present biological research. Its molecular aspects are dealt with by the discipline of neurobiochemistry. As the theme of the Mosbacher Colloquium, we chose this term rather than the term "neurochemistry", in order to stress the dynamic biochemical aspects of present molecu lar neurobiology and to avoid the flavor of being purely descriptive and "static", which is frequently associated with the term neurochem istry. This appears the more warranted, since the natural products and analytical chemistry phase of discovering the basic chemical com ponents of the nervous system has passed its culmination. The period of assessment has laid the foundation for studying the dynamic inter play of the various chemical components in the actual biological opera tion of nervous tissue. Thus, neurobiochemis~ry is that part of the neurosciences which is dominated by the ways of thinking and the metho dology of biochemistry. For this Colloquium only topics were selected that deal with the biochemistry of neurons. Thus, we excluded from the agenda other neu ral cells such as glial cells (astrocytes, ependymal cells, oligoden drocytes), meningeal cells, and capillary endothelial cells. This restriction was applied for two reasons: (1) The time available for the meeting did not allow an extensive display of the whole spectrum of neurobiochemical research. (2) The biochemistry of neurons is far more advanced than that of any other cell type of the nervous system *.

Book Focus on Neurochemistry Research

Download or read book Focus on Neurochemistry Research written by Robert M. Coleman and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain is an enormously dynamic organ. Even when we sleep connections are made, signals sent and messages delivered. One of the key ways that the brain operates is via chemical stimuli which permits different parts of the brain to communicate between themselves and with the rest of the body. Determining what these chemicals, proteins and molecules are is an important way to not only discover how the brain works, but provide novel targets that may be useful in the treatment of disease, for instance in dealing with memory loss in dementia. This new book brings together international research in a broad range of topics, including molecular and cellular neurochemistry, neuropharmacology and genetic aspects of CNS function, neuroimmunology, metabolism, as well as the neurochemistry of neurological and psychiatric disorders of the CNS.

Book Research Methods in Neurochemistry

Download or read book Research Methods in Neurochemistry written by Neville Marks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of Research Methods in Neurochemistry includes chapters on different aspects of topics touched on in previous volumes and develops a number of new themes as well. The bias, though not entirely intended, is directed toward studies of macromolecules, both at the meta bolic level in relation to protein synthesis and at the structural level in rela tion to specific proteins and lipids. The new departures concern subjects in Section I with marked applied bias: biochemical studies of nervous system tumors and of the cerebrospinal fluid, both of which we hope will be of value to clinical as well as basic scientists. Biogenic amines and the enzymes involved in their metabolism figure again in Section II, where the powerful tool of mass spectrometry receives further treatment in relation to the analysis of dansyl derivatives of trace amines in the brain. Once again we remain grateful to the individual authors, both for their contributions and patience, and to Plenum Press for their continued interest and cooperation. Thanks are also due to colleagues and friends for their comments and criticisms on the series as a whole; suggestions for future volumes will always be welcome and should be sent to one of the editors. Download or read book Better Living Through Neurochemistry written by James Lee and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-11 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brand new revised and updated version of Your Brain Electric for 2017! In brain science, there are two phenomena which are becoming increasing common in modern society. Firstly, rates of depression and anxiety disorders are increasing, with as many as one in five people either clinically depressed or anxious at any given time. Secondly, our aging population is revealing a range of cognitive problems associated with aging, including memory loss and other cognitive impairments. Each of these has a common thread - They are underpinned by clear deficits in neurochemical function. You have probably heard that "depression is caused by a serotonin imbalance" (sometimes, but not always, this is the case), however did you also know - - Depression can be caused by low dopamine or noradrenaline (norepinephrine) - Problems with aceylcholine and glutamate can lead to cognitive, memory and attention-related issues - Deficits in your natural opioids (such as endorphins) not only leads to increased pain, but also poor tolerance to stressful life events or situations However the good news is that whether your problem is serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, glutamate, endorphins or any of the other major neurotransmitters and neuro-hormones, your situation is usually fixable with either medication, supplements, cognitive behavioral therapy or other lifestyle modifications. They key is to first know exactly how it feels to be deficient in a particular neurotransmitter. For example, did you know that - - Just the simple act of writing out a plan on how you will change your life for the better can boost serotonin and dopamine - Just hanging out with friends and loved ones boosts serotonin - Most people who are diagnosed with depression will receive a medication to boost serotonin, however for many people, serotonin is not their problem - Meditation has been shown to boost serotonin In his latest book, following on from his hugely successful anti-aging book, The Methuselah Project, James Lee gives you all you need to know regarding the major neurotransmitters including - - What they are - What do they do in your brain and body - What are the symptoms when they are depleted - How to boost levels Lee also details some of the more obscure (yet no less important) neurochemicals such as substance P, which has recently been implicated in neuropathic pain conditions and poor tolerance to stress. As always, Lee has focused on creating a book that sticks to the key facts to create a boredom-free exploration of that mysterious electrical activity that is occurring 24/7, between your ears.
