Book Public Administration in the Third World

Download or read book Public Administration in the Third World written by V. Subramaniam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1990-06-26 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multiauthor reference handbook gives a detailed, objective picture of the evolution, structure, and processes of public administration in representative Third World countries. Written by an international group of specialists with first-hand knowledge of the subject, it presents empirical studies of developing nations in Asia, the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, the West Indies, and Latin America. The resulting data are shaped by the editor into a theoretical framework delineating the complex relationships of state, bureaucracy, and class in the Third World. Subramaniam's introduction provides a critical overview of development literature in the field. Each case study begins with an historical introduction and discusses the political, executive, and the administrative structures and processes. Among the specific topics covered are public enterprises, administrative departments, personnel, financial administration, and regional and local administrative units. The majority of the systems studied are affected by the unregulated power of public enterprises, the persistence of colonial legacies, and the elitism of the bureaucracy. The concluding section relates these common elements to the sociohistorical characteristics of the middle-class groups that dominate both politics and public administration. Offering new research findings and a useful theoretical synthesis, this study will promote a clearer understanding of the internal political processes of Third World nations and be of compelling interest to specialists and students concerned with Third World political economy, comparative government, and international political economy.

Book Coups Rivals and the Modern State

Download or read book Coups Rivals and the Modern State written by Beth S. Rabinowitz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State development in Africa is risky, even life-threatening. Heads of state must weigh the advantage of promoting political and economic development against the risk of fortifying dangerous political rivals. This book takes a novel approach to the study of neopatrimonial rule by placing security concerns at the center of state-building. Using quantitative evidence from 44 African countries and in-depth case studies of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, Rabinowitz demonstrates that the insecurities of the African state make strategically aligning with rural leaders critical to political success. Leaders who cultivate the goodwill of the countryside are better able to endure sporadic urban unrest, subdue political challengers, minimize ethnic and regional discord, and prevent a military uprising. Such regimes are more likely to build infrastructure needed for economic and political development. In so doing, Rabinowitz upends the long-held assumption that African leaders must cater to urban constituents to secure their rule.

Book Uses and Abuses of Political Power

Download or read book Uses and Abuses of Political Power written by Maxwell Owusu and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book, published in 1970, was widely acclaimed as the best account of grassroots politics to have emerged from Africa. One of its unique features is the extent to which the author has effectively integrated historical and anthropological issues into a political frame. The book is divided into three parts: the first looks retrospectively at the first edition and its relevance to Ghana's past, present and future; the second part considers the importance of comparative political studies to the development and fostering of the growth of an informed and knowledgeable political public and opinion leadership, covering history, culture and politics; and the third part presents an intellectual overview of Ghanaian political change, from Nkrumah to the peaceful transfer of power from the National Democratic Congress government to the New Patriotic Party at the start of the new millennium. Maxwell Owusu is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the University Michigan. Educated at the London School of Economics, Harvard University, and the University of Chicago, he has taught at the University of Ghana, Legon. He was a consulting member of the Constitutional Experts Committee which drafted the 1992 constitution proposals. He is the author of numerous scholarly publications, the recipient of a US Institute of Peace Grant, and on the board of the International Union of Anthropoligical and Ethnological Sciences. Praise for the first edition: ".the best available account of grassroots politics to have emerged from Africa." Political Science Quarterly ".this fine and vivic piece of scholarship comes to blow away fhe cobwebs from Ghanaian political studies." American Political Science Review "The author demonstrates an enviable ability to present his diverse material in a readily comprehensive framework and handles his written sources as deftly as his own participant observation." American Journal of Sociology
