Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Prose Works of G. E. Lessing Though there is no writer whose works may be more advantageously studied as a whole than Lessing's, there are few of equal importance who are known in this country in so partial and fragmentary a manner. Various translations of 'Nathan der Weise' and 'Minna von Barnhelm' have, it is true, exhibited him fairly enough as a dramatist of pure style, refined humour, and liberal thought; at the same time another class of readers has had more than one opportunity of studying the treatise on the 'Laokoon,' and admiring his vigorous and suggestive style of criticism and wide scholarship, which must always give it a literary interest whatever substantial value may be assigned to it. But such an acquaintance with isolated pieces hardly allows a reader to estimate their real value, and still less does it afford him an opportunity of co-ordinating the positions of Lessing the dramatist and Lessing the critic, and forming any definite notion of his true place in literary history. To do so demands in any case some general knowledge of German literature, but whilst Goethe and Schiller have become duly appreciated in this country, their great precursor has, amongst general readers, been little more than a name to those who were even so far acquainted with him. Book The Hamburg Dramaturgy by G E Lessing

Download or read book The Hamburg Dramaturgy by G E Lessing written by Natalya Baldyga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While eighteenth-century playwright and critic Gotthold Ephraim Lessing made numerous contributions in his lifetime to the theater, the text that best documents his dynamic and shifting views on dramatic theory is also that which continues to resonate with later generations – the Hamburg Dramaturgy (Hamburgische Dramaturgie, 1767–69). This collection of 104 short essays represents one of the eighteenth century’s most important critical engagements with the theater and its potential to promote humanistic discourse. Lessing’s essays are an immensely erudite, deeply engaged, witty, ironic, and occasionally scathing investigation of European theatrical culture, bolstered by deep analysis of Aristotelian dramatic theory and utopian visions of theater as a vehicle for human connection. This is the first complete English translation of Lessing's text, with extensive annotations that place the work in its historical context. For the first time, English-language readers can trace primary source references and link Lessing’s observations on drama, theory, and performance not only to the plays he discusses, but also to dramatic criticism and acting theory. This volume also includes three introductory essays that situate Lessing’s work both within his historical time period and in terms of his influence on Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment theater and criticism. The newly translated Hamburg Dramaturgy will speak to dramaturgs, directors, and humanities scholars who see theater not only for entertainment, but also for philosophical and political debate.

Book The Birth of Theater from the Spirit of Philosophy

Download or read book The Birth of Theater from the Spirit of Philosophy written by David Kornhaber and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche's love affair with the theater was among the most profound and prolonged intellectual engagements of his life, but his transformational role in the history of the modern stage has yet to be explored. In this pathbreaking account, David Kornhaber vividly shows how Nietzsche reimagined the theatrical event as a site of philosophical invention that is at once ancestor, antagonist, and handmaiden to the discipline of philosophy itself. August Strindberg, George Bernard Shaw, and Eugene O'Neill— seminal figures in the modern drama's evolution and avowed Nietzscheans all—came away from their encounters with Nietzsche's writings with an impassioned belief in the philosophical potential of the live theatrical event, coupled with a reestimation of the dramatist's power to shape that event in collaboration with the actor. In these playwrights' reactions to and adaptations of Nietzsche's radical rethinking of the stage lay the beginnings of a new direction in modern theater and dramatic literature.
