This book was released on 1972-12-07 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 4 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Book Edith Sitwell

Download or read book Edith Sitwell written by Richard Greene and published by Virago. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the better part of forty years, Edith Sitwell's poetry has been neglected by critics. But born into a family of privileged eccentrics, Edith Sitwell was highly regarded by her contemporaries: the great writers and artists of the day who attended her unlikely London literary salon. Her quips and anecdotes were legendary and her works like English Eccentrics confirmed her comic genius, while later she established herself as the quintessential poet of the Blitz. This masterly biography, meticulously researched and drawing on many previously unseen letters, firmly places Edith Sitwell in the literary tradition to which she belongs.

Book The Nature of Modernism

Download or read book The Nature of Modernism written by Elizabeth Black and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This books presents the first extended study of the relationship between British modernist poetry and the environment. Challenging reductive associations of modernism as predominantly anthropocentric in character and urban in focus, the book’s central argument is that within British modernist poetry there is a clear and sustained interest in the natural world which has yet to receive adequate critical attention. Whilst modernist studies continues to emphasize the plurality of the movement and the breadth of voices and concerns within it, the environmental consciousness of modernist literature and its response to changes to human/nature relations following the experience of war and modernity remain largely unexamined. Exploring British modernist poetry from an ecocritical perspective offers a fresh approach to the movement and its context, and produces original readings of both canonical and more marginalized modernist voices. This book opens by discussing the relationship between modernism and ecocriticism and the benefits of creating a dialogue between the two. It then presents new readings of Edward Thomas, T. S. Eliot, Edith Sitwell, and Charlotte Mew that reveal a shared preoccupation with environmental issues and a common desire to find new ways of achieving physical, psychological, and artistic reconnection with nature. Building on the continuing growth of ecocriticism, this book demonstrates how green approaches to modernist studies can produce new insights into both individual poets and the modernist movement as a whole, making it an essential resource for students of modernism, ecocriticism, and early-twentieth-century literature.

Book A Poet s Journal Other Writings 1934 1974

Download or read book A Poet s Journal Other Writings 1934 1974 written by Padraic Fallon and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet and playwright Padraic Fallon (1905-74) was an active and prolific reviewer-critic in the leading Irish periodicals of his day. He wrote principally for Dublin Magazine, The Bell and The Irish Times where he was befriended by its famous editor R.M. Smyllie. He came to know the leading Irish literary figures of his time - Yeats, George Russell (AE) and most especially Austin Clarke, with whom he shared a serious engagement with the Gaelic literary tradition. The essay-reviews here include his influential 'Poets' Journal' from The Bell, with connective pieces on Synge, Yeats, AE, O'Casey, F.R. Higgins, James Stephens, Graves, Pound, MacNeice, Kinsella, Hughes and Larkin, salted by others on the Elizabethan playwright Cyril Tourneur and Ibsen. In this interpretive work he proves himself a lucid, eloquent modernist of the first order. This volume, marks the centenary of Fallon's birth in Athenry, Co. Galway. It is introduced and edited by his son, The Irish Times critic and writer Brian Fallon, who has also edited his father's Poems and Versions (1983), Collected Poems (1990) and Collected Plays (2005).
