Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Poems of Robert Browning The publishers have desired that this book should be included in the series Of English Classics edited by me, and that my name should be put first on the title-page; but I may say here in the preface that the better part - in every sense - Of the work has been done by Miss Hersey, who knows tenfold more about Browning than I do. She originated the plan, selected the poems, prepared the Introduction, and wrote more than half Of the notes. I have carefully collated the earlier and later texts Of the poems (see especially the various readings of T lze Lost Lead er, Coila'e Roland, and Ftp/5a Passes, none of which appear in their later form in the American editions), and have revised and filled out the Notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Folks' Browning: Selected From the Poems of Robert Browning Robert browning was born May 7, 1812, in Cam berwell, a suburb of London. To his father, who was a lover of books, the poet owed the early forming Of a taste for reading and the acquirement of a keen appreciation in literary values. As a boy, and in fact throughout his life of seventy seven years, Browning was robust, vigorous, exuber ant Of mind and body. His father, who, it is said, never suffered a day's illness, blessed the boy with more than a taste for good books. He gave him a sound body as a fitting mansion for a sane and opulent mind. How glad, the poet says, in Soul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Select Poems of Robert Browning

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Poems of Robert Browning: Edited With Notes and an Introduction Let me be frank with my readers and say that there are some plausible reasons for this neglect Of Brown ing. His manner has been against him: it is frequently unconventional and abrupt; it takes for granted an unusually alert intelligence. His matter, too, is more than commonly difficult: it implies a vivid interest in human character, in many types Of the human soul, and in the conduct Of men and women placed in per plexing circumstances, on spiritual trial, in short. In this, he suggests a quite common experience in social intercourse: our meeting with some one who is, as we say, a tri e difficult to get on with, brusque, reticent, or what not, - who yet, as we discover later, hides a heart Of gold or a mind Of piercing clearness behind his idiosyncrasy. Browning's unwonted ways may be easily made light Of; and it is the purpose Of this Introduction to him to play the part Of a tactful host in smoothing out little surface difficulties that handicap an honored and distinguished guest. Book Browning s Poems Selected Classic Reprint

Download or read book Browning s Poems Selected Classic Reprint written by Austin Melvin Works and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Browning's Poems (Selected) The eleven minor poems of Robert Browning to be considered here are, with the exception of One Word M ore, so many examples of dramatic or objective poetry. As soon as the personality of an author obtrudes itself into his work, that work ceases to be dramatic and be comes subjective or lyrical, as in the case of the poem mentioned above, in which we hear Browning himself in his own person addressing his beloved wife, Elizabeth Barrett. Subjective poetry, in the strictest sense of the term, is very unusual with Browning, although his intense personality is always to be felt, yet seldom seen or heard, in all he has written. Of the various forms of dramatic poetry Browning is most interested in the dramatic monologue, which we shall describe at some length when we come to discuss the construction of his verse. Book Pomegranates From an English Garden

Download or read book Pomegranates From an English Garden written by Robert Browning and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pomegranates From an English Garden: A Selection From the Poems of Robert Browning The name of Robert Browning has been before the world now for fifty years. For the greater part of the time his work has had so little recognition, that one marvels at his courage in going so steadily on with it. His "Pomegranates" have been produced year after year, decade after decade, in unfailing abundance; and, while critics have kept paring at the rind, and the general public has not even asked if there was anything beneath it, he has laboured on with unremitting energy, calmly awaiting the time when "the heart within, blood-tinctured, of a veined humanity," should be at length discovered. It can scarcely be said, even yet, that that time has come; but it is coming fast. Already he is something more than "the poet's poet." Few intelligent people now are content to know one of the master minds of the age simply as the author of "The Pied Piper of Hamelin," as if that were the only thing he had written worth reading! That the form in which the thought of Browning is cast is altogether admirable, is what none but his most undiscriminating admirers will assert. It is often, unquestionably, rough and forbidding. But there is strength even in its ruggedness; and in its entire freedom from conventionality there is a charm such as one enjoys in wild mountain scenery, even though only in little patches it may have any suggestion of the garden or the lawn. Book The Complete Poetic and Dramatic Works of Robert Browning Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Complete Poetic and Dramatic Works of Robert Browning Classic Reprint written by Robert Browning and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 1054 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poetic and Dramatic Works of Robert Browning Miss Barrett was an invalid, guarded with the greatest care, and Browning, in urging marriage upon her, met with all the obstacles which the circumstances raised. He confronted indeed the indomitable refusal of Miss Barrett's father. A physician had held out hopes that a removal to Italy would give the invalid a chance to regain some degree of health, but Mr. Barrett, for some not very clear reason, refused h'm consent to her taking the journey with her brother. It was then that Browning, who can readily be conceived of as a masterful man, won Miss Barrett's consent to a sudden and clandestine marriage, and a journey to Italy as his wife. When she had finally assented to this course, writes Mrs. Orr, she took a preparatory step which, in so far as it was known, must itself have been sufficiently startling to those about her; she drove to Regent's Park, and when there, stepped out of the carriage and on to the grass. I do not know how long she stood - probably only for a moment; but I well remember hearing that when, after so long an interval. She felt earth under her feet and air about her, the sensation was almost bewilderingly strange. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
