This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Poems of Pierre De Ronsard If the traveller is on his way north from Venice, where, at the cost of a morning spent in a gondola, you may see all the architecture of the world displayed in a crowded, im possible pageant between sea and heaven, and where you retreat breathless from Veronese only to be blinded by Titian, he will probably be distressed by the formal beauties of the great castles of the Touraine the last flourishes of the Flamboyant in the church of Brou will seem to him the artifice of a style grown too old to possess natural graces; domestic architecture will be either neat without simplicity or grandiose without dignity. But if he returns from F lorence, the inevitable revulsion, the sense of some light lost from the sky or dreamy loveliness from the earth, will be less strong in him; he will observe that behind the brier-like luxuriance of the Flamboyant style no less than amid the urbane splendours of the great Chateaux there is a latent quality that he will have dimly realized to be present in all Florentine art before Michelangelo, - a tranquil strength, a restrained rhythm of line. The tree may glow with a thousand flowers, but the dark, sinewy boughs are beneath them, defiant of time and the winds. Book excerpt: Ronsard is considered one of France's greatest love poets, yet his poetic achievements are not restricted to his verses of love, wine and nature. A true Renaissance figure, his themes ranged from politics, science and philsophy, to the bawdy and risqué. Using Greco-Roman and Italian poetic models, and drawing on the rich images of classical mythology, Ronsard revolutionised the tradition of French poetry. In the 20th century, Ronsard's poetry was influential for W. B. Yeats, translated by Sylvia Plath, and illustrated by Henri Matisse. He stands as one of the most innovative and diverse voices in the history of European poetry.

Book excerpt: One of France's most influential love poets, Pierre de Ronsard embraced a variety of themes from politics, science, and philosophy to bawdy and risqué material that outraged religious reformers. Drawing on classical and Italian poetic models and on powerful imagery from ancient mythology, Ronsard created verse that revolutionized the French poetic tradition. His style ranges from the sublime rhetoric of the Pindaric odes and hymns to the lyricism and sensuality of his sonnets. Ronsard's poetry has influenced many twentieth-century writers and artists, including W. B. Yeats, Sylvia Plath, and Henri Matisse. The dual-language format of this new edition provides English-speaking readers with an enhanced perspective on one of the most innovative voices in the history of European poetry.

Book Kenneth Fearing Selected Poems

Download or read book Kenneth Fearing Selected Poems written by Kenneth Fearing and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet, journalist, and crime novelist, Kenneth Fearing wrote poems filled with the jargon of advertising and radio broadcasts and tabloid headlines, sidewalk political oratory, and the pop tunes on the jukebox. Seeking out what he called “the new and complex harmonies . . . of a strange and still more complex age,” he evoked the jitters of the Depression and the war years in a voice alternately sardonic and melancholy, and depicted a fragmenting urban world bombarded by restless desires and unnerving fears. But, in the words of editor Robert Polito, “Fearing’s poems carry no whiff of the curio or relic. If anything, his poems . . . insinuated an emerging media universe that poetry still only fitfully acknowledges.” This new selection foregrounds the energy and originality of Fearing’s prophetic poetry, with its constant formal experimenting and its singular note of warning: “We must be prepared for anything, anything, anything.” As a chronicler of mass culture and its discontents, Fearing is a strangely solitary figure who cannot be ignored. About the American Poets Project Elegantly designed in compact editions, printed on acid-free paper, and textually authoritative, the American Poets Project makes available the full range of the American poetic accomplishment, selected and introduced by today’s most discerning poets and critics.

Book Selected Poems

  • Author : Du Bellay
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • ISBN : 0192847996
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Selected Poems written by Du Bellay and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Live now and listen, do not wait in vain Until tomorrow; pluck life's rose today.' Joachim du Bellay and Pierre de Ronsard are two of the major sixteenth-century French poets and leaders of the extraordinary group known as 'La Pléiade'. Determined to create a national vernacular literature, the Pléiade poets profited from an intense study of Greek and Roman models and from a creative use of classical mythology to produce a body of verse that reflects the vigour and variety of European Renaissance culture. Du Bellay broke new ground with the gritty realism and resentment of the Regrets and with his meditation in the Antiquities on the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. In a series of sonnet sequences (Cassandre, Marie, Astrée, Hélène) Ronsard developed the Petrarchan tradition of love poetry with a wider range of situations, a richer imagery, and more robust sensuality. His reputation as France's greatest love-poet should not, however, obscure his excellence in an astonishing variety of forms and genres such as elegies, odes, philosophical hymns, and religious controversy. Anthony Mortimer's verse translations cover this many-faceted achievement in a version that functions as English poetry in its own right without departing from the letter and spirit of the original. The French text is given on facing pages and a useful appendix contains extracts from seminal manifestos by the two poets. A critical introduction, a glossary of names and places, and abundant notes encourage the reader to place the poems in their social and cultural context. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
