Book excerpt: There is a blind spot in recent accounts of the history, theory and aesthetics of optical media: namely, the field of the three-dimensional, or trans-plane, image. It has been widely used in the 20th century for very different practices - military, scientific and medical visualization - precisely because it can provide more spatial information. And now in the 21st century, television and film are employing the method even more. Appearing for the first time in English, Jens Schroeter's comprehensive study of the aesthetics of the 3D image is a major scholarly addition to this evolving field. Citing case studies from the history of both technology and the arts, this wide-ranging and authoritative book charts the development in the theory and practice of three-dimensional images. Discussing and analyzing the transformation of the socio-cultural and technological milieu, Schroeter has produced a work of scholarship that combines impressive historical scope with contemporary theoretical arguments.

Book An Evaluation of Three dimensional Displays

Download or read book An Evaluation of Three dimensional Displays written by Herschel W. Leibowitz and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of volumetric and stereoscopic display devices revealed no commanding reasons for their adoption in complex man-machine data processing systems. Claimed advantages are specific to particular system tasks, and no set of requirements has yet been identified that requires the 3-D displays. Methods of presenting multidimensional information on 2-D surfaces appear to be generally satisfactory and far less expensive. Certain specific disadvantages of the new 3-D displays have been considered. Many persons would have difficulty in their use from imperfect stereoscopic vision. The display equipment itself would have to be built to closer and more costly tolerance to provide increased registration to overcome certain inherent weaknesses, such as difficulty in generating suitable symbols in a volume, and to meet problems of reading out target data. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is Volumetric Display A volumetric display device is a graphic display device that forms a visual representation of an object in three physical dimensions, as opposed to the planar image of traditional screens that simulate depth through a number of different visual effects. One definition offered by pioneers in the field is that volumetric displays create 3D imagery via the emission, scattering, or relaying of illumination from well-defined regions in (x,y,z) space.
