  • ISBN : 0486320243
  • Pages : 482 pages

Download or read book Dynamic Light Scattering written by Bruce J. Berne and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers play an increasingly important role in a variety of detection techniques, making inelastic light scattering a tool of growing value in the investigation of dynamic and structural problems in chemistry, biology, and physics. Until the initial publication of this work, however, no monograph treated the principles behind current developments in the field. This volume presents a comprehensive introduction to the principles underlying laser light scattering, focusing on the time dependence of fluctuations in fluid systems; it also serves as an introduction to the theory of time correlation functions, with chapters on projection operator techniques in statistical mechanics. The first half comprises most of the material necessary for an elementary understanding of the applications to the study of macromolecules, or comparable sized particles in fluids, and to the motility of microorganisms. The study of collective (or many particle) effects constitutes the second half, including more sophisticated treatments of macromolecules in solution and most of the applications of light scattering to the study of fluids containing small molecules. With its wide-ranging discussions of the many applications of light scattering, this text will be of interest to research chemists, physicists, biologists, medical and fluid mechanics researchers, engineers, and graduate students in these areas.

Book Introduction to Dynamic Light Scattering by Macromolecules

Download or read book Introduction to Dynamic Light Scattering by Macromolecules written by Kenneth S Schmitz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Dynamic Light Scattering by Macromolecules provides an introduction to the basic concepts of dynamic light scattering (DLS), with an emphasis on the interpretation of DLS data. It presents the appropriate equations used to interpret DLS data. The material is presented in order of increasing complexity of the systems under examination, ranging from dilute solutions of noninteracting particles to concentrated multicomponent solutions of strongly interacting particles and gels. Problems are presented at the end of each chapter to emphasize these concepts. Since a major emphasis of this textbook is the interpretation of DLS data obtained by polarized light scattering studies on macromolecular solutions, the results of complementary experimental techniques are also presented in order to gain insight into the dynamics of these systems. This textbook is intended for (1) advanced undergraduate students and graduate students in the chemical, physical, and biological sciences; (2) scientists who might wish to apply DLS methods to systems of interest to them but who have no formal training in the field of DLS; and (3) those who are simply curious as to the type of information that might be obtained from DLS techniques.

Book Selected Papers from the ISTEGIM 19

Download or read book Selected Papers from the ISTEGIM 19 written by Lucien Baldas and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue compiles 11 scientific works that were presented during the International Symposium on Thermal Effects in Gas Flow in Microscale, ISTEGIM 2019, held in Ettlingen, Germany, in October 2019. This symposium was organized in the framework of the MIGRATE Network, an H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network that ran from November 2015 to October 2019 (www.migrate2015.eu). MIGRATE intends to address some of the current challenges in innovation that face the European industry with regard to heat and mass transfer in gas-based microscale processes. The papers collected in this book focus on fundamental issues that are encountered in microfluidic systems involving gases, such as the analysis of gas–surface interactions under rarefied conditions, the development of innovative integrated microsensors for airborne pollutants, new experimental techniques for the measurement of local quantities in miniaturized devices and heat transfer issues inside microchannels. The variety of topics addressed in this book emphasizes that multi-disciplinarity is the real common thread of the current applied research in microfluidics. We hope that this book will help to stimulate early-stage researchers who are working in microfluidics all around the world. This book is dedicated to them!

Book Light Scattering in Liquids and Macromolecular Solutions

Download or read book Light Scattering in Liquids and Macromolecular Solutions written by V. Degiorgio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains most of the papers presented at the "Workshop on Quasielastic Light Scattering Studies of Fluids and Macromolecular Solutions" held at CISE, Segrate (Milano), Italy, from 11 to 13 May, 1979. Quasielastic light scattering (also called self-beating spectroscopy or intensity correlation spectroscopy) is the technique, introduced by Benedek and coworkers and by Cummins and coworkers about 15 years ago, by which dynamical information about a scattering medium is obtained through the measurement of the power spectrum (or the intensity correlation function) of the laser light scattered from the medium. The technique received in the early seventies a considerable impulse from the development of real-time fast digital correlators. The aim of the Workshop was to bring together a selected number of researchers in order to discuss recent developments in quasielastic light scattering and related optical methods and to report about new applications of the technique in physics, chemistry and biology. The first two days of the meeting were devoted to the oral presentations of papers. In the third day an informal session was held which included a very lively and thorough discussion of the highlights of the Workshop. Most part of the technical problems were debated during the informal session and during the subsequent visits to the light scattering laboratory in CISE.

Book Selected Papers of Kun Huang

Download or read book Selected Papers of Kun Huang written by Kun Huang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Kun Huang is widely known for his collaboration with Max Born in writing the classic monograph, ?Dynamical Theory of Crystal Lattices?. During his years of active research, he has made many important contributions to solid state physics. The present collection of papers is selected at his own choice as representing his most influential works. Thus one finds included his pioneering work on the interaction of radiation field with polar lattices and the resulting coupled vibration modes (later known as ?polariton?); the systematic development of his theory of radiative and nonradiative multiphonon transition processes associated with lattice relaxation; his early prediction of diffuse X-ray scattering due to crystal defects; and his recent research works on low-dimensional semiconductor structures, etc.Professor Huang has found by his experience that scientists interested in these papers often want to know more particulars underlying the research work (background, motivation and rationale involved etc.). Thus he was led to write a commentary which is published alongside the papers.

Book Light Scattering from Microstructures

Download or read book Light Scattering from Microstructures written by Fernando Moreno and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical phenomenon of light scattering is one of the most studied t- ics in light-matter interaction and, even today, involves some controversial issues. A present focus of interest for many researchers is the possibility of obtaining information about microstructures, for example surface roughness, and the size, shape and optical properties of particles by means of a n- invasive technique such as the illumination of these objects with light. One of their main tasks is to extract the relevant information from a detailed study of the scattered radiation. This includes: measurement of the light intensity in di erent directions, analysis of its polarization, determination of its stat- tics, etc. Contributionstoresolvingthisproblemareimportantnotonlyfrom the point of view of increasing basic knowledge but also in their applications to several elds of industry and technology. Consider, for example, the pos- bility of distinguishing between di erent types of atmospheric contaminants, biological contaminants in our blood, the detection of microdefects in the manufacturing of semiconductors, magnetic discs and optical components, or the development of biological sensors. During the period September 11-13, 1998, we brought together a group of international experts on light scattering at the Summer School of Laredo at the University of Cantabria. In a series of one-hour lectures, they discussed currentaspectsoflightscatteringfrommicrostructureswithspecialemphasis on recent applications. The present book condenses those lectures into ve parts.
