Download or read book Selected Papers 1945 1980 with Commentary written by Chen Ning Yang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable personal and professional chronicle by one of today's leading physicists, this is a collection of Chen Ning Yang's personally selected papers supplemented by his insightful commentaries. Including previously unpublished or hard-to-find works, this volume contains Yang's important papers on statistical physics, nuclear forces, and particle physics. Among them are his seminal work with T D Lee on the nonconservation of parity, for which they won the Nobel Prize, and his work with R L Mills, which led to modern gauge theories with their exciting prospects for the broad unification of field theories. The commentaries were written especially for this volume and provide a fascinating account of Yang's development as a physicist as well as a look at many important physicists of the 20th century. They trace the development of Yang's interests and ideas from his graduate school days to the present, showing how he worked with his colleagues and how their physics came into being.Together, the papers and commentaries in this unique collection comprise a powerful personal statement, shedding light on both the intellectual development of a great physicist and on the nature of scientific inquiry.

Book Selected Papers of E B Dynkin with Commentary

Download or read book Selected Papers of E B Dynkin with Commentary written by Evgeniĭ Borisovich Dynkin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugene Dynkin is a rare example of a contemporary mathematician who has achieved outstanding results in two quite different areas of research: algebra and probability. In both areas, his ideas constitute an essential part of modern mathematical knowledge and form a basis for further development. Although his last work in algebra was published in 1955, his contributions continue to influence current research in algebra and in the physics of elementary particles. His work in probability is part of both the historical and the modern development of the topic. This volume presents Dynkin's scientific contributions in both areas. Included are Commentary by recognized experts in the corresponding fields who describe the time, place, role, and impact of Dynkin's research and achievements. Biographical notes and the recollections of his students are also featured. This book is jointly published by the AMS and the International Press.

Book Planning Ideas That Matter

Download or read book Planning Ideas That Matter written by Bishwapriya Sanyal and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading theorists and practitioners trace the evolution of key ideas in urban and regional planning over the last hundred years Over the past hundred years of urbanization and suburbanization, four key themes have shaped urban and regional planning in both theory and practice: livability, territoriality, governance, and reflective professional practice. Planning Ideas That Matter charts the trajectories of these powerful planning ideas in an increasingly interconnected world. The contributors, leading theorists and practitioners, discuss livability in terms of such issues as urban density, land use, and the relationship between the built environment and natural systems; examine levels of territorial organization, drawing on literature on regionalism, metropolitanism, and territorial competition; describe the ways planning connects to policy making and implementation in a variety of political contexts; and consider how planners conceive of their work and learn from practice. Throughout, the emphasis is on how individuals and institutions—including government, business, professional organizations, and universities—have framed planning problems and ideas. The focus is less on techniques and programs than on the underlying concepts that have animated professional discourse over the years. The book is recommended for classroom use, as a reference for scholars and practitioners, and as a history of planning for those interested in the development of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History has replaced morality. Not in point-to-point substitution, but in that something could be timeless, either in principle or practice. It’s likely that the old anxiety concerning one’s “fate” is now itself a mask. It is interesting to imagine that a metaphysical source of angst can be more comforting than a quotidian one. We are most intolerant of anyone who seeks to be as we are and have what we have, yet this too remains somehow a throwback to the previous age of caste, child chattel, and misogyny, so the soteriological sensibility remains compelling. It is, if anything, a much larger mystery than it was before. Now, and for the first time, we must save ourselves.

Book Selected Papers of Hirotugu Akaike

Download or read book Selected Papers of Hirotugu Akaike written by Emanuel Parzen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pioneering research of Hirotugu Akaike has an international reputation for profoundly affecting how data and time series are analyzed and modelled and is highly regarded by the statistical and technological communities of Japan and the world. His 1974 paper "A new look at the statistical model identification" (IEEE Trans Automatic Control, AC-19, 716-723) is one of the most frequently cited papers in the area of engineering, technology, and applied sciences (according to a 1981 Citation Classic of the Institute of Scientific Information). It introduced the broad scientific community to model identification using the methods of Akaike's criterion AIC. The AIC method is cited and applied in almost every area of physical and social science. The best way to learn about the seminal ideas of pioneering researchers is to read their original papers. This book reprints 29 papers of Akaike's more than 140 papers. This book of papers by Akaike is a tribute to his outstanding career and a service to provide students and researchers with access to Akaike's innovative and influential ideas and applications. To provide a commentary on the career of Akaike, the motivations of his ideas, and his many remarkable honors and prizes, this book reprints "A Conversation with Hirotugu Akaike" by David F. Findley and Emanuel Parzen, published in 1995 in the journal Statistical Science. This survey of Akaike's career provides each of us with a role model for how to have an impact on society by stimulating applied researchers to implement new statistical methods.

Book Selected Papers Of Frederick Sanger With Commentaries

Download or read book Selected Papers Of Frederick Sanger With Commentaries written by Margaret Dowding and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-30 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume is mainly concerned with the development of methods for “sequencing” — that is, determination of the order of the amino acids in proteins and of nucleotides in RNA and DNA. In 1943 the position of only one amino acid in a protein (insulin) was known, and Sanger's first paper resulted in finding a second amino acid. In his final paper in 1982 he describes the determination of a DNA sequence of 48,502 nucleotides. The papers describe the steady improvements in techniques, and exciting biological results revealed by the sequences.
