Book A Conductor s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral Orchestral Works

Download or read book A Conductor s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral Orchestral Works written by Jonathan D. Green and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Conductor’s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral-Orchestral Works, Jonathan D. Green's sixth book-length contribution of guides for conductors, he offers this companion to his critically acclaimed A Conductor’s Guide to the Choral-Orchestral Works of J. S. Bach. In this volume, Green addresses works of the Baroque era from Monteverdi through Bach's contemporaries. In addition to brief biographical sketches for each composer, Green includes for each work the approximate duration, text sources, performing forces, currently available editions, locations of manuscript materials, notes, performance issues, evaluation of solo roles, evaluation of difficulty, and a discography and bibliography. Duration information comes from a variety of sources, but Green turns to actual recording times of performances. The purpose of this book is to aid conductors in selecting repertoire appropriate to their needs and the abilities of their ensembles. The discographies and bibliographies, while not exhaustive, serve as helpful starting points for further research. A Conductor’s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral-Orchestral Works should appeal to conductors in supporting their concert programming. Librarians and music student will also find this work an ideal reference title for the study of Baroque repertoire.

Book excerpt: (Unlocking the Masters). Jean Sibelius was not only Finland's greatest composer, he was one of the most distinctive and appealing musical voices in the first half of the 20th century, especially renowned for his characterful handling of the romantic symphony orchestra. His example has led directly to an unprecedented cultural flowering in his homeland, making this small country of 5 million people a powerhouse in the world of classical music composition and performance. Sibelius The Orchestral Works An Owner's Manual considers over 80 individual orchestral pieces, from songs and choruses to symphonies, tone poems, overtures, and theatrical music. Along the way, readers are invited to identify and enjoy the fascinating mix of elements that make up Sibelius's colorful personal idiom. Two CDs accompanying the text offer not only a rich selection of music by Sibelius, including two complete symphonies and two of his most popular tone poems, but also a representative selection of the best Finnish music by his contemporaries and successors. This approach offers a unique opportunity: to hear Sibelius in context and gain an understanding of exactly what distinguishes him from his contemporaries, how he influenced later generations, and how it was that he came to be viewed as the musical spokesperson of an entire nation.

Book Comprehensive Analysis of Selected Orchestral Works by Jennifer Higdon

Download or read book Comprehensive Analysis of Selected Orchestral Works by Jennifer Higdon written by Christina L. Reitz and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: My research explores the most recent symphonic compositions of Jennifer Higdon that have propelled her to national fame. A stylistic analysis of blue cathedral, Concerto for Orchestra and City Scape reveal compositional traits unique to this composer that differentiates her music from contemporaries. A principal reasoning for such differences is fundamentally related to her compositional philosophy and her self-described intuitive style. This study examines and defines this style with pertinent illustrations of its numerous manifestations in her music. As a living composer, Higdon is able to contribute significantly to numerous questions about her experiences and the analysis of her music. Her intuitive method remains her primary compositional technique and as such, this document places great emphasis on defining this strategy with illustrative examples.
