Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher's URL: https://www.areditions.com/rr/rrb/b161.html Johann David Heinichen (1683-1729) is known today principally as the author of the great 1728 treatise Der General-Baß in der Composition, a comprehensive discussion of the practice of continuo realization and of its place in the art of composition. But Heinichen also occupied one of the most prestigious musical posts in Europe, that of kapellmeister to the Royal and Electoral court in Dresden. This volume contains a selection of the music he composed for the office of Vespers in the court church during the 1720s. Second only to the Mass in importance in Catholic liturgy, the different components of the Vespers service¿the psalms, Marian antiphons, hymns, and Magnificat¿afforded composers great opportunity for a variety of dramatic expression, an opportunity that Heinichen fully exploited. Heinichen¿s settings use a mixture of chorus and vocal solos and are all with instrumental accompaniment.

Book The Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 Music Context Performance

Download or read book The Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 Music Context Performance written by Jeffrey Kurtzman and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2000-01-06 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thorough-going study of Monteverdi's Vespers, the single most significant and most widely known musical print from before the time of J.S. Bach. The author examines Monteverdi's Vespers from multiple perspectives, combining his own research with all that is known and thought of the Vespers by other scholars. The historical origin as well as the musical and liturgical context of the Vespers are surveyed; similarly the controversial historiography of the Vespers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is scrutinized and evaluated. A series of analytical chapters attempt to clarify Monteverdi's compositional process and the relationship between music and text in the light of recent research on modal and tonal aspects of early seventeenth century music. The final section is devoted to thirteen chapters investigating performance practice issues of the early seventeenth century and their application to the Vespers, including general and specific recommendations for performance where appropriate. The book concludes with a series of informational appendices, including the psalm cursus for Vespers of all major feasts in the liturgical calendar, texts, and structural outlines for the Vespers compositions based on a cantus firmus, an analytical discography, and bibliographies of seventeenth-century musical and theoretical sources.

Book A Conductor s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral Orchestral Works

Download or read book A Conductor s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral Orchestral Works written by Jonathan D. Green and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Conductor’s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral-Orchestral Works, Jonathan D. Green's sixth book-length contribution of guides for conductors, he offers this companion to his critically acclaimed A Conductor’s Guide to the Choral-Orchestral Works of J. S. Bach. In this volume, Green addresses works of the Baroque era from Monteverdi through Bach's contemporaries. In addition to brief biographical sketches for each composer, Green includes for each work the approximate duration, text sources, performing forces, currently available editions, locations of manuscript materials, notes, performance issues, evaluation of solo roles, evaluation of difficulty, and a discography and bibliography. Duration information comes from a variety of sources, but Green turns to actual recording times of performances. The purpose of this book is to aid conductors in selecting repertoire appropriate to their needs and the abilities of their ensembles. The discographies and bibliographies, while not exhaustive, serve as helpful starting points for further research. A Conductor’s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral-Orchestral Works should appeal to conductors in supporting their concert programming. Librarians and music student will also find this work an ideal reference title for the study of Baroque repertoire.
