Book Idyllic No More

Download or read book Idyllic No More written by Giff Johnson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can Pacific nations, endowed with islands of travel poster beauty, vibrant cultures, and centuries old ways of life based on sustainable practices, hurdle significant development and political challenges they face today - in addition to withstanding climate change and rising sea levels? Corruption, reliance on donor-driven aid and consultants, dwindling rural populations and burgeoning urban centers that stress the ability of governments to provide education and health services, an epidemic of non-communicable diseases as lifestyles change, and battles with countries outside the region for control of fisheries and deep sea resources - these are among the increasingly challenging issues facing the islands today. In a series of essays about the looming climate threat, sustainable development and the region's multi-billion dollar tuna industry, the U.S. nuclear test legacy in the Marshall Islands, and the impact of out-migration, 'Idyllic No More' addresses the often difficult problems and choices facing the Pacific islands today. The author, says veteran Oceania journalist Floyd K. Takeuchi, "frames a view of the Pacific islands that's characterized by hard-edge realism while offering a way forward. 'Idyllic No More' is a bracing look at where the islands are today, and what it will take to build a future of hope and opportunity for islanders across the region." 'Idyllic No More' is an excellent resource for stimulating discussion in classes, and for readers interested in contemporary Pacific island issues.

Book Tourism in Pacific Islands

Download or read book Tourism in Pacific Islands written by Stephen Pratt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Island Countries have been shown to be especially vulnerable to such external influences as natural disasters, political unrest and downturns in the global economy and their tourism industries have been notably affected. In particular, they typically have a narrow resource base and a fragile and often vulnerable natural environment. While there is some research on islands and small states, there is a dearth of information on the South Pacific and very little research is being undertaken in the region compared to other geographical regions in the world. This volume brings together current work in Pacific Island tourism. In this collection, three main themes arise: Images of the South Pacific; Socio-economic Impacts of Tourism; and Pacific Island Countries and the Outside World. The first focus is on the question of image, namely, stereotypes of a destination held by tourists and potential tourists, the extent to which residents, for their part, really welcome visitors, and the role tourism might play in changing pre-established images. The second theme is tourism's impacts, notably the economic and socio-cultural effects of international tourism's intrusion in the region which, though often hotly debated, have attracted relatively little empirical research. The third focus is on the challenges of how PICs articulate with their external geo-political and physical environment. These involve existing relations with formal colonial centres, geographical isolation, the need for greater air access to the outside world and for more tourists, and the continuing threat to several PICs of global warming, which increased air travel will inevitably exacerbate. This text will be of interest to tourism students, researchers and academics in the fields of tourism, development studies and cultural studies.

Book IMF Staff papers Volume 42 No 3

Download or read book IMF Staff papers Volume 42 No 3 written by International Monetary Fund. Research Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes long-term exchange rate modeling. The paper reviews the literature that tests for a unit root in real exchange rates and the closely related work on testing for a unit root in the residual from a regression of the nominal exchange rate on relative prices. It argues that the balance of evidence is supportive of the existence of some form of long-term exchange rate relationship. The paper highlights that the form of this relationship, however, does not accord exactly with a traditional representation of the long-term exchange rate.

Book The Economic Impact of Natural Disasters in Pacific Island Countries Adaptation and Preparedness

Download or read book The Economic Impact of Natural Disasters in Pacific Island Countries Adaptation and Preparedness written by Dongyeol Lee and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-05-10 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific island countries are highly vulnerable to various natural disasters which are destructive, unpredictable and occur frequently. The frequency and scale of these shocks heightens the importance of medium-term economic and fiscal planning to minimize the adverse impact of disasters on economic development. This paper identifies the intensity of natural disasters for each country in the Pacific based on the distribution of damage and population affected by disasters, and estimates the impact of disasters on economic growth and international trade using a panel regression. The results show that “severe” disasters have a significant and negative impact on economic growth and lead to a deterioration of the fiscal and trade balance. We also find that the negative impact on growth is stronger for more intense disasters. Going further this paper proposes a simple and consistent method to adjust IMF staff’s economic projections and debt sustainability analysis for disaster shocks for the Pacific islands. Better incorporating the economic impact of natural disasters in the medium- and long-term economic planning would help policy makers improve fiscal policy decisions and to be better adapted and prepared for natural disasters.
