Book Ten Poems to Open Your Heart

Download or read book Ten Poems to Open Your Heart written by Roger Housden and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten Poems to Open Your Heart is a book devoted to love: to the intimacy of personal love and lovemaking, to a loving compassion for others, and to the love that embraces both this world and the next. This new volume from Roger Housden features a few of the same poets as his extraordinarily moving Ten Poems to Change Your Life, such as Mary Oliver and Pablo Neruda, along with contributions from Sharon Olds, Wislawa Szymborska, Czeslaw Milosz, Denise Levertov, and others. Any one of the ten poems and, indeed, any one of Housden’s reflections on them, can open, gladden, or pierce your heart. Through the voices of these ten inspiring poets, and through illustrations from his own life, Housden expresses the tenderness, beauty, joys, and sorrows of love, the presence of which, more than anything else, gives human existence its meaning. As Housden says in his eloquent introduction, “Great poetry happens when the mind is looking the other way and words fall from the sky to shape a moment that would normally be untranslatable. . . . When the heart opens, we forget ourselves and the world pours in: this world, and also the invisible world of meaning that sustains everything that was and ever shall be.” From the Hardcover edition.

Book excerpt: For this companion to her New York Times best-selling collection A Family of Poems, Caroline Kennedy has hand-selected more than a hundred of her favorite poems that lend themselves to memorization. Some are joyful. Some are sad. Some are funny and lighthearted. Many offer layers of meaning that reveal themselves only after the poem has been studied so closely as to be learned by heart. In issuing the challenge to memorize great poetry, Caroline Kennedy invites us to a deeply enriching experience. For as she reminds us, “If we learn poems by heart, not only do we have their wisdom to draw on, we also gain confidence, knowledge and understanding that no one can take away.” Illustrated with gorgeous, original watercolor paintings by award-winning artist Jon J Muth , this is truly a book for all ages, and one that families will share again and again. Caroline’s thoughtful introductions shed light on the many ways we can appreciate poetry, and the special tradition of memorizing and reciting poetry that she celebrates within her own family.

Download or read book Selected Heart Poems written by Zoe Williamson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Heart Poems accompanies Love Chronicles (my first poetry collection) as a selection of poems about love, spirituality, and journeys. The verse that has been collected here communicates more experiences of romance and the web of emotions that stem from complex feelings for another person. It also explores how we feel love for our children and our unconditional bond with them. On a spiritual level, there is a relationship between the self and the recognition that our lives are constantly changing yet finding reassurance that we can come to terms with this through understanding several Buddhist concepts. The key, perhaps most profoundly, is that of the connection between our happiness and the happiness of everyone else. There are collected poems that are connected with past travels across Europe and the Middle East and throughout my time in South America. The attempt here is to paint a vast canvas with my encounters of cultures and people, their customs and beliefs, backdrops to unbelievable meteorology and breathtaking scenery. With this in mind, it is possible to recall the excitement of the past and still move forward with extended belief and profound faith. Simplified, my poems are illustrations of my perceptions toward the world according to my personal experiences of love. This includes my fondness of travel, my interest in people, my love of the arts and also the magic language of dreams and how they interpret into daily life. Primarily, my love poems are passionate and filled with intrigue and sensuality; they themselves narrate stories rich in romance and emotions connected with the heart.

Download or read book By Heart written by Ted Hughes and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has happened to the lost art of memorising poems? Why do we no longer feel that it is necessary to know the most enduring, beautiful poems in the English language 'by heart'? In his introduction Ted Hughes explains how we can overcome the problem by using a memory system that becomes easier the more frequently it is practised. The collected 101 poems are both personal favourites and particularly well-suited to the method Hughes demonstrates. Spanning four centuries, ranging from Shakespeare and Keats through to Thomas Hardy and Seamus Heaney, By Heart offers the reader a 'mental gymnasium' in which the memory can be exercised and trained in the most pleasurable way. Some poems will be more of a challenge than others, but all will be treasured once they have become part of the memory bank. This edition is part of a series of anthologies edited by poets such as Don Paterson and Simon Armitage and features an attractive new design to complement an anthology of classic poems.

Book 100 Poems to Break Your Heart

Download or read book 100 Poems to Break Your Heart written by Edward Hirsch and published by Houghton Mifflin. This book was released on 2021 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 of the most moving and inspiring poems of the last 200 years from around the world, a collection that will comfort and enthrall anyone trapped by grief or loneliness, selected by the award-winning, best-selling, and beloved author of How to Read a Poem Implicit in poetry is the idea that we are enriched by heartbreaks, by the recognition and understanding of suffering--not just our own suffering but also the pain of others. We are not so much diminished as enlarged by grief, by our refusal to vanish, or to let others vanish, without leaving a record. And poets are people who are determined to leave a trace in words, to transform oceanic depths of feeling into art that speaks to others. In 100 Poems to Break Your Heart, poet and advocate Edward Hirsch selects 100 poems, from the nineteenth century to the present, and illuminates them, unpacking context and references to help the reader fully experience the range of emotion and wisdom within these poems. For anyone trying to process grief, loneliness, or fear, this collection of poetry will be your guide in trying times.

Download or read book Poetry by Heart written by Andrew Motion and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry by Heart - based on the hugely successful nationwide schools competition, 200 magical poems to learn by heart 'The poems we learn stay with us for the rest of our lives. They become personal and invaluable, and what's more they are free gifts - there for the taking' Simon Armitage Two years ago former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion had the idea of setting up Poetry by Heart - a nationwide annual competition for secondary schools which asked contestants to learn two or three poems and be judged on their recitations, first at school level, then regional, then in a national final held at London's National Portrait Gallery. It's proved a huge success, with hundreds of schools participating in the first year, and numbers up by 20% in the second. Coinciding with the start of the third year of competition, and published on National Poetry Day whose theme coincidentally in 2014 is Recitation, this Poetry by Heart anthology brings together the pool of poems - 200 altogether - from which contestants make their choices. Specially picked by Motion and his three co-editors, these poems make up a treasure house - of almost-unknown poems and familiar poems from the mainstream; love poems and war poems; funny poems and heartbroken poems; poems that recreate the world we know and poems written on the dark side of the moon. And all chosen with a view to their being recited out loud. From William Wordsworth to Wilfred Owen, Emily Brontë to Elizabeth Bishop this wonderfully enjoyable anthology will be enjoyed by all ages and includes the best poets from the past to the present day. In a groundbreaking feature, the book includes QR codes which allow readers to use their mobile phones to listen to recordings of the poems - many of them specially recorded by the poets themselves. Sir Andrew Motion was Poet Laureate from 1999 till 2009, and is Professor of Creative Writing at Royal Holloway College, London. Jean Sprackland'sTilt won the Costa Poetry award in 2008. She is a Reader in Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University. Julie Blake is co-Founder and Director of The Full English, an organization based in Bristol which provides support to teachers of English Literature. Mike Dixon is an educational consultant specializing in English in the classroom.

  • Pages : 48 pages

Download or read book Poems from the Heart written by Christine Powell and published by . This book was released on 2006-02-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems from the heart is an emotional poetry book on real or fantasy experiences by me or people I have come to know. I wrote my first poem when I was 12. I think that behind every poem lies a deep emotional story. This is a big help when it comes to writing novels as I can feel every bit of a poem. The cover consists of a heart with a dagger through it cracking it and a halo round one side. I think this cover describes every emotion within the book. For example the heart is where the poetry comes from, the dagger represents the anger and the hate, the crack represents weakness (a heart will crack under pressure) the redness of the heart is the passion and happiness and the halo represents the strength and the mending of a heart. The fear is represented by the crack as well. Most of these poems are based on true life experiences. My favourite poem is "My saviour dreams" as it describes me, I feel that I waste my mind working like a robot in a factory when my ambition and passion for writing is so strong. I decided that poems from the heart should be my first published book because it was poetry that I started off doing. I have set out the poems in order going from weak to strong, love to hate and back to love. I thought it was important to show a strength coming from a weakness and that love and hate can be so similar. That fear can make you more weary of the world and the people in it. I have really enjoyed writing poems from the heart as I am enjoying writing my novel. The poems towards the end of the book i.e. The London bombs, my single last tear and my saviour dreams are some of the most recent ones. I just hope that people will enjoy reading them as much as I have enjoyed writing them.
