Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel is certainly one of the richest and most complex philosophical endeavours in the history of Western thought. Hegelian scholars have either tried to make sense of its individual parts through detailed analyses, or to offer a comprehensive interpretation of the system as a whole. Attempts to combine these two approaches have often appealed to some key-concepts, such as historicity, recognition, dialectic, and Aufhebung, or to a combination of these concepts, in order to develop consistent interpretations of the different components of the system. This book lays the foundation for a similar interpretive project by focusing on Hegel’s concept of recollection (Erinnerung). This collection of essays provides a detailed examination of the role played by recollection within the different spheres of the system, while at the same time acknowledging the specific character of its different instances. This undertaking is guided by the idea that the relationship between the different instances examined here constitutes a privileged key to the interpretation of Hegel’s philosophy and allows a deeper understanding of some of its essential speculative moments.

Book Essays on Hegel s Philosophy of Subjective Spirit

Download or read book Essays on Hegel s Philosophy of Subjective Spirit written by David S. Stern and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Hegel considered his philosophy of subjective spirit to be of particular importance, it has been the focus of little present-day scholarship, particularly in English. Recent editorial work associated with the publication of a new edition of Hegel's Gesammelte Werke and the discovery and translation of a transcript of one of his lecture courses on the topic, however, have set the stage for a fresh encounter with this fascinating and wide-ranging component of his thought. Taking up questions central to the philosophy of mind and body and to the philosophy of psychology, the Philosophy of Subjective Spirit includes discussions of feelings and emotions, consciousness, habit and free will, and rationality—as well as madness, dreams, and the paranormal. Situating Hegel's philosophy on the topic in relation to the rest of his work, to his contemporaries, and to current philosophy of mind and psychology, this volume demonstrates its richness as a focus of study and paves the way for a new direction in Hegel scholarship.

Book Hegel on Tragedy and Comedy

Download or read book Hegel on Tragedy and Comedy written by Mark Alznauer and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No philosopher has treated the subject of tragedy and comedy in as original and searching a manner as G. W. F. Hegel. His concern with these genres runs throughout both his early and late works and extends from aesthetic issues to questions in the history of society and religion. Hegel on Tragedy and Comedy is the first book to explore the full extent of Hegel's interest in tragedy and comedy. The contributors analyze his treatment of both ancient and modern drama, including major essays on Sophocles, Aristophanes, Shakespeare, Goethe, and the German comedic tradition, and examine the relation of these genres to political, religious, and philosophical issues. In addition, the volume includes several essays on the role tragedy and comedy play in Hegel's philosophy of history. This book will not only be valuable to those who wish for a general overview of Hegel's treatment of tragedy and comedy but also to those who want to understand how his treatment of these genres is connected to the rest of his thought.

Book The Phenomenology of Spirit Reader

Download or read book The Phenomenology of Spirit Reader written by Jon Stewart and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1997-12-23 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phenomenology of Spirit was Hegel's first major philosophical work and is considered by many to be his masterpiece. Its several hundred pages treat topics as diverse as Greek drama, religion, medieval court culture, natural science, Romanticism, and the Enlightenment. Hegel regarded it as the introduction to his philosophical system as a whole, and it is often thought to be the most accessible work in his otherwise difficult philosophical corpus. This anthology represents the most complete collection of essays on the Phenomenology in any language. It follows Hegel's table of contents, and all of the major sections of the work are covered. The main goal guiding the selection of essays was to collect the best articles written on the Phenomenology by distinguished international Hegel scholars and at the same time to provide systematic coverage. Although the essays are all by leading Hegel scholars, none of them presupposes any particular in-depth knowledge of Hegel or German philosophy. The object of the book is thus to make the Phenomenology more accessible for students while serving as an impetus for further Anglo-American Hegel research. Among the contributors to the book are Howard Adelman, John W. Burbidge, Martin De Nys, Kenley R. Dove, Katharina Dulckeit, Joseph C. Flay, Moltke S. Gram, Daniel P. Jamros, George Armstrong Kelly, Alasdair MacIntyre, Mitchell H. Miller, Jr., Patricia Jagentowicz Mills, Karlheinz Nusser, David W. Price, John Sallis, Harald Schondorf, Gary Shapiro, Jean-Louis Vieillard-Baron, Kenneth R. Westphal, and Merold Westphal.

Book Between Hegel and Spinoza

Download or read book Between Hegel and Spinoza written by Hasana Sharp and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work in political philosophy and the history of ideas presents Spinoza and Hegel as the most powerful living alternatives to mainstream Enlightenment thought. Yet, for many philosophers and political theorists today, one must choose between Hegel or Spinoza. As Deleuze's influential interpretation maintains, Hegel exemplifies and promotes the modern "cults of death," while Spinoza embodies an irrepressible "appetite for living." Hegel is the figure of negation, while Spinoza is the thinker of "pure affirmation". Yet, between Hegel and Spinoza there is not only opposition. This collection of essays seeks to find the suppressed kinship between Hegel and Spinoza. Both philosophers offer vigorous and profound alternatives to the methodological individualism of classical liberalism. Likewise, they sketch portraits of reason that are context-responsive and emotionally contoured, offering an especially rich appreciation of our embodied and historical existence. The authors of this collection carefully lay the groundwork for a complex and delicate alliance between these two great iconoclasts, both within and against the Enlightenment tradition.

Book excerpt: Hegel (1770-1831) is one of the major philosophers of the nineteenth century. Many of the major philosophical movements of the twentieth century - from existentialism to analytic philosophy - grew out of reactions against Hegel. He is also one of the hardest philosophers to understand and his complex ideas, though rewarding, are often misunderstood. In this magisterial and lucid introduction, Frederick Beiser covers every major aspect of Hegel's thought. He places Hegel in the historical context of nineteenth-century Germany whilst clarifying the deep insights and originality of Hegel's philosophy. A masterpiece of clarity and scholarship, Hegel is both the ideal starting point for those coming to Hegel for the first time and essential reading for any student or scholar of nineteenth century philosophy. Additional features: glossary chapter summaries chronology annotated further reading.

Book Kierkegaard and Philosophy

Download or read book Kierkegaard and Philosophy written by Alastair Hannay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kierkegaard and Philosophy makes many of the most important papers on Kierkegaard available in one place for the first time. These seventeen essays, written over a period of over twenty years, have all been substantially revised or specially prepared for this collection, with a new introduction by the author. In the first part, Alastair Hannay concentrates on Kierkegaard's central philosophical writings, offering closely text-based accounts of the silent concepts Kierkegaard uses. The second part shows the relevance of other thinkers' treatments of shared themes, pointing out where they differ from Kierkegaard. The concluding chapter provides a reason Kierkegaard himself would give for disagreeing with those who claim his texts are infinitely interpretable. Written by the world's foremost Kierkegaard scholar and translator, Kierkegaard and Philosophy is an indispensible resource for all students of Kierkegaard's work.

Book excerpt: A two-volume set. Print edition available in cloth only. Awarded the Nicholas Hoare/Renaud-Bray Canadian Philosophical Association Book Prize, 2001 From the Preface: Hegel's Ladder aspires to be . . . a ‘literal commentary’ on Die Phänomenologie des Geistes. . . . It was the conscious goal of my thirty-year struggle with Hegel to write an explanatory commentary on this book; and with its completion I regard my own ‘working’ career as concluded. . . . The prevailing habit of commentators . . . is founded on the general consensus of opinion that whatever else it may be, Hegel’s Phenomenology is not the logical ‘Science’ that he believed it was. This is the received view that I want to overthrow. But if I am right, then an acceptably continuous chain of argument, paragraph by paragraph, ought to be discoverable in the text.
