Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Essays 1884-1907 When lately asked by my friend Mr. John Buchan to allow a selection from my Essays (made by him) to be added to this series, I readily assented, for when all is said and done, circulation is an author's life. Whilst an author is read he lives, on ceasing to be read he dies; and the more copies there are of his works in existence, the better is his chance of being read somewhere and by somebody. The other day in a cottage - a cottage of gentility - I happened upon a damsel reading Shenstone's Essays. She said she had found them there, and added (defiantly) that she liked them very much. I accounted Shenstone a lucky fellow, considering how slender were his talents, how flimsy are his Essays, and that he died so long ago as February 1763. I accounted Shenstone a lucky fellow, considering how slender were his talents, how flimsy are his Essays, and that he died so long ago as February 1763. I observe signs and symptoms of a recrudescence of the old claim of authors for perpetual copyright, for property, not privilege, in their writings. It is a dream. In the first place, the essence of property, in things not consumable, is the right of total exclusion. "Keep off the grass," "I want my things for myself." But no author really wants to keep his books to himself. Above everything else, he wants the world to read them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Essays The Familiar Essayists, usually people Of schol arly tastes and seasoned wisdom, have been fond of allusion and illustration. They have loved to point an argument with an anecdote, and to press home a doctrine with a simile. But the knowledge displayed is never obtrusive or pedantic, for the Essay must always seem the brief and light result Of learning and meditation. It is beyond the essayist's prov ince to usurp the preacher's office or to play the part of tutor. He is quite content with a hint instead of a sermon, with a jest in place of a solemn maxim. He is well aware also that the slightest trace of conventionality or affectation or even of reticence will destroy the impression he wishes to produce. This means, of course, that he is to be on intimate and natural terms with his audience. Assuming the confidential tone of unreserved conversation, the skillful essayist behaves to his readers as if he were betraying to them momentous secrets. Mon taigne, Lamb, Stevenson seem almost to be chatting at our very elbows, so frankly and innocently do they disclose their partialities and foibles, their little whims and weaknesses. She was not more than three years old when she died thus paradoxically through the stafi Of life, but already, thanks to the wise and thoughtful decrees Of Nature, she had stamped her image upon as adorable a family Of little beautiful uglies as you ever saw, one Of whom, the image Of her mother, is at the moment wonder ing when I shall return to the armchair in order to make again a lap. 50 that, though it is hard that dogs should so quickly pass through the lighted hall between darkness and darkness, yet there is ever another left: not, Of course, the same, for nothing is the same, but like enough in devout ways and trustworthiness Of habits to console us. Book The Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature

Download or read book The Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature written by David Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Classical Reception (OHCREL) is designed to offer a comprehensive investigation of the numerous and diverse ways in which literary texts of the classical world have stimulated responses and refashioning by English writers. Covering the full range of English literature from the early Middle Ages to the present day, OHCREL both synthesizes existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge new research, employing an international team of expert contributors for each of the five volumes. OHCREL endeavours to interrogate, rather than inertly reiterate, conventional assumptions about literary 'periods', the processes of canon-formation, and the relations between literary and non-literary discourse. It conceives of 'reception' as a complex process of dialogic exchange and, rather than offering large cultural generalizations, it engages in close critical analysis of literary texts. It explores in detail the ways in which English writers' engagement with classical literature casts as much light on the classical originals as it does on the English writers' own cultural context. This fourth volume, and second to appear in the series, covers the years 1790-1880 and explores romantic and Victorian receptions of the classics. Noting the changing fortunes of particular classical authors and the influence of developments in archaeology, aesthetics and education, it traces the interplay between classical and nineteenth-century perceptions of gender, class, religion, and the politics of republic and empire in chapters engaging with many of the major writers of this period.

Book Collected Essays Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Essays The apology offered in the Preface to the first volume of this series for the occurrence of repeti tions, is even more needful here I am afraid. But it could hardly be otherwise with speeches and essays, on the same topic, addressed at intervals, during more than thirty years, to widely distant and different hearers and readers. The oldest piece, that On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences, contains some crudities, which I repudiated when the lecture was first reprinted, more than twenty years ago; but it will be seen that much of what I have had to say, later on in life, is merely a development of the propositions enunciated in this early and sadly imperfect piece of work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early advocate of art for art's sake, George Saintsbury became, for the English reader of the 1880s, the interpreter of all French literature, and later, a pioneer in comparative literature and historian of English prosody and prose rhythm. His early years at Oxford shaped his literary attitudes for life. After a decade as a schoolmaster, he was for many years a leading London journalist, then professor of English at the University of Edinburgh. Eighteen more years saw a steady flow of prefaces and essays and a history of the French novel. In "King of Critics" one meets a man of myriad literary tastes who wished to know the whole history of European literature and share it all with readers. He loved equally the purest lyrics of Shelley and the complexity of Donne, the richness of Rabelais, the panorama of Scott and medieval romance, and the profound depths of irony in Swift and Ecclesiastes, and always urged upon the reader the joys of minor writers. "King of Critics" is a fascinating study not only of Saintsbury, but of the literary world of Victorian-Edwardian England. It will appeal to a wide variety of readers, particularly those interested in biography and literary history and criticism.

Book excerpt: The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. Each volume presents contemporary responses to a writer's work, enabling students and researchers to read for themselves, for example, comments on early performances of Shakespeare's plays, or reactions to the first publication of Jane Austen's novels. The carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to journalism and contemporary opinion, and little published documentary material such as letters and diaries. Significant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included, in order to demonstrate the fluctuations in an author's reputation. Each volume contains an introduction to the writer's published works, a selected bibliography, and an index of works, authors and subjects. The Collected Critical Heritage set will be available as a set of 68 volumes and the series will also be available in mini sets selected by period (in slipcase boxes) and as individual volumes.

Download or read book American Philosophy written by Barbara MacKinnon and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology demonstrates the richness and diversity of the American intellectual heritage. In it we see how Jonathan Edwards grapples with the problem of how to reconcile freedom and responsibility with Calvinist religious beliefs; how Franklin and Jefferson exemplified American enlightenment thought; and how the Transcendentalists, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, formulated their particular romantic idealist beliefs. A second and significant portion of the anthology is devoted to Pragmatism. Substantive excerpts from Peirce, James and Dewey, as well as Royce, are collected here. A third part is devoted to other Twentieth-Century American philosophies. No other collection of writings in this field includes the breadth of coverage that this one does. Among the chapters in this third part of the book are those on early Process Philosophy, Phenomenology, Positivism, and Language Philosophies. Selections from such philosophers as Whitehead, Weiss, Buchler, Gurwitsch, Sellars, Quine, Davidson, and Rawls, along with many others are included in this part. A final chapter is devoted to twentieth-century American Moral Philosophy. The book is specifically designed to be used as a text for courses in American philosophy. A substantive introduction that emphasizes the historical setting as well as major interests and ideas of the philosophers accompanies each chapter. Extensive bibliographies and study guide questions follow each chapter. The selections include more than any one course will cover, but in their completeness also allow individual teachers and readers to select what they want.
