Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Articles on Woman Suffrage Although Woman Suffrage has been discussed for many years, interest in the subject has by no means diminished. It is in response to a very lively demand for material and especially for a Debaters' Handbook on the subject that the present volume has been compiled. This book is similar to the other volumes of the series, and contains a bibliography and reprints of the best available material both in favor of and opposed to the extension of the suffrage. For the sake of convenience, the reprints have been grouped under three main headings: General Discussion, Affirmative, and Negative Discussion. Owing to the vast amount of literature on this subject, a complete bibliography would be an impossibility and has not been attempted. It is believed, however, that this bibliography will be found adequate for the needs of the average reader or debater. While a much larger number of references were examined than appear here, only those have been selected that would be valuable and at the same time easily accessible to the average library or individual. Book The Case for Woman Suffrage

Download or read book The Case for Woman Suffrage written by Margaret Ladd Franklin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Woman Suffrage: A Bibliography This bibliography of books, pamphlets, and magazine articles dealing with woman suffrage has been prepared by a young college woman, Margaret Ladd Franklin, who graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1908. During her college course she and many of her classmates became deeply interested in the question of woman suffrage. In talking to them and other young college women the President of the National College Equal Suffrage League had occasion to observe that many of the old fashioned arguments most successful in the past seemed to have lost their compelling power, while certain theoretical arguments making a strong intellectual appeal and certain other practical arguments dealing with modem social conditions seemed to carry instant conviction. In the light of such discussions it seemed desirable that so far as possible all the existing arguments for woman suffrage should be carefully reread and classified from the point of view of college women of to-day, and Miss Franklin was accordingly asked to prepare this bibliography for the College Equal Suffrage League. She has spent many weeks in the Congressional Library in Washington and has herself read all the books and pamphlets which she mentions. The stars of praise, the trenchant criticisms, and the illuminating comments are wholly her own. Were it otherwise the bibliography would lose its value and its special appeal to college women. Only in two or three instances when saints of our suffrage calendar had unwisely adventured themselves into the world of literature and had received at her hands too black a mark was it suggested that she should soften a somewhat drastic comment. Book Woman s Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment Classic Reprint

Download or read book Woman s Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment Classic Reprint written by Henry St George Tucker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment The following pages contain substantially the five lectures delivered by the author in the Storrs Lecture Course in the Law School of Yale University, in February, 1916. The title given to this book, "Woman's Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment," is not the same under which the lectures were originally given. Their title was "Local Self-Government." The reader will see that the real discussion in these pages is devoted to the proper and rightful demarcation of the powers of the Federal and State Governments under the Constitution of the United States, and the necessity for maintaining those powers in a just equilibrium for the preservation of the Liberty of American citizens. Download or read book History of Woman Suffrage Vol 3 of 3 written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 1124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Woman Suffrage, Vol. 3 of 3: 1876-1885 For the completion of this work we are indebted to Eliza Jackson Eddy, the worthy daughter of that noblephilanthropist, Francis Jackson. He and Charles F. Hovey are the only men who have ever left a generous bequest to the woman suffrage movement. To Mrs. Eddy, who bequeathed to our cause two-thirds of her large fortune, belong all honor and praise as the first woman who has given alike her sympathy and her wealth to this momentous and far-reaching reform. This heralds a turn in the tide of benevolence, when, instead of building churches and monu ments to great men, and endowing colleges for boys, women will make the education and enfranchisement of their own sex the chief object of their lives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Woman Suffrage, Vol. 2 of 3: 1861-1876 IN presenting to our readers the second volume of the History of Woman Suffrage, we gladly return our thanks to the press for the many favorable notices we have received from leading journals, both in the Old world and the new. The words of cordial approval from a large circle of friends, and especially from women well known in periodical literature, have been to us a constant stimulus during the toilsome months we have spent in gathering material for these pages. It was our purpose to have condensed the records of the last twenty years in a second volume, but so many new questions in regard to Citizenship, State rights, and National power, indirectly bearing on the political rights of women, grew out of the civil war, that the arguments and decisions in Congress and the Supreme Courts have combined to swell these pages beyond our most liberal calculations, with much valuable material that can not be condensed nor ignored, making a third volume inevitable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman Suffrage: A Reply Smith demurs, and contends that the lot of the woman has not been determined by the will of the man, at least in any considerable degree. According to him it had its origin in those circumstances which made it expedient, on public grounds, that in the early stages of civilization the family should be socially, legally, and politically a unit. Into this portion of the controversy, however, I cannot see that there would be any advantage in entering. Whether Mr. Mill was right or wrong in his view of the historical question, he was at all events eminently successful in the purpose for which he introduced the discussion. He has secured a hearing for the cause of woman, so effectually, that we may now at least feel confident that it will not be ultimately decided on other grounds than those of reason and justice. Nor does it in truth matter whether in approaching the question of Woman Suffrage we adopt Mr. Mill's or Mr. Smith's theory. Both alike regard the existing disabilities of women as survivals - Mr. Mill, as survivals from a very early period in which physical force was supreme; Mr. Smith as survivals from the state of things which produced the peculiar constitution of the patriarchal family but both as survivals, and therefore as belonging to a condition of life which has passed away. The point is thus of purely archaeological interest, while the real question now. Before the public is, not as to the origin of woman's disabilities, but as to their present expediency; the interest of the whole community, to borrow once more Mr. Smith's language, being the test.
