Book Liberalising Foreign Direct Investment Policies in the APEC Region

Download or read book Liberalising Foreign Direct Investment Policies in the APEC Region written by Bernie Bishop and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. This work is a response to criticisms that investment liberalization in the APEC region is not moving quickly enough. It commences with a historical overview of APEC's process for investment liberalization and a description of current foreign direct investment policies for each of the APEC economies. It then argues that there are significant constraints to further liberalization arising from economic development concerns in the developing countries and political considerations in both developed and developing countries in the region. It also suggests that a truly liberalized investment environment would involve the removal of investment incentives. Again, there are political and institutional reasons that make this difficult. With several suggestions for further research that should better inform policy makers, this is an informative insight into the complex issues involved in the liberalization process in the APEC region.

  • Publisher : Cornell University Press

Download or read book Beyond Japan written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have Japan's relative economic decline and China's rapid ascent altered the dynamics of Asian regionalism? Peter Katzenstein and Takashi Shiraishi, the editors of Network Power, one of the most comprehensive volumes on East Asian regionalism in the 1990s, present here an impressive new collection that brings the reader up to date. This book argues that East Asia's regional dynamics are no longer the result of a simple extension of any one national model. While Japanese institutional structures and political practices remain critically important, the new East Asia now under construction is more than, and different from, the sum of its various national parts. At the outset of a new century, the interplay of Japanese factors with Chinese, American, and other national influences is producing a distinctively new East Asian region.

Book Regionalism versus Multilateral Trade Arrangements

Download or read book Regionalism versus Multilateral Trade Arrangements written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that the open multilateral trading system after World War II was a key ingredient in the rapid economic development of the entire world. Especially in Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, exports increased dramatically both in absolute terms and as a percentage of GNP. In the 1980s, however, preferential trading arrangements (PTAs) began to emerge as significant factors affecting world trade. This volume contains thirteen papers that analyze the tensions between multilateral trading systems and preferential trade arrangements and the impact of these tensions on East Asia. The first four chapters introduce PTAs conceptually and focus on the unique political issues that these agreements involve. The next five essays present more direct empirical analyses of existing PTAs and their economic effects, primarily in East Asia. The last four papers concentrate on the outcomes of individual East Asian nations' trading policies in specific instances of preferential agreements.

Book Economic Dynamism in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Economic Dynamism in the Asia Pacific written by Grahame Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This broad-ranging student textbook examines the rise of the Asia-Pacific as an important economic region. It looks at the sources of that rise, its future development and the possible consequences for the global economy. The analysis is divided into three sections considering: * how far the Asia-Pacific has developed as a regional system, looking at the patterns of integration of the principal economies * the relationship between the key individual economies of Japan, Korea, China and the United States * how the rise of the Asia-Pacific economy has affected the international economic system. In so doing it provides much-needed insights not only into the growth of this powerful economic region, but also the international context of Asia-Pacific development.
