Book Indian Muslims and Revivalism in Twentieth Century India

Download or read book Indian Muslims and Revivalism in Twentieth Century India written by Dr POONAM BAWA and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of my D. Litt Thesis which seeks to highlight the philosophical contributions of Muslim Revivalist Thinkers in the awakening of Muslims in 20th century India. It reflects the in-depth study of the socio-political philosophy of Muslim Thinkers, their efforts to regenerate and restore pride in Muslims for their culture, religion, and philosophy and finally motivating them to participate in the freedom movement with zeal. The book presents a critical analysis of the philosophy of Thinkers and captures the divergence in the views of Muslim Revivalist Thinkers. I hope the book will be of great help to readers and researchers to understand the socio, religious and political scenario of Twentieth century India and the situations that paved the way for India’s partition in 1947.

Book Minority Nationalisms in South Asia

Download or read book Minority Nationalisms in South Asia written by Tanweer Fazal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia is the theatre of myriad experimentations with nationalisms of various kinds - religious, linguistic, religio-linguistic, composite, plural and exclusivist. In all the region’s major states, officially promulgated nationalism at various times has been fiercely contested by minority groups intent on preserving what they see as the pristine purity of their own cultural inheritance. This volume examines the perspective of minority identities as they negotiate their terms of co-existence, accommodation and adaptation with several other competing identities within the framework of the ‘nation state’ in South Asia. It examines three different kinds of minority articulations – cultural conclaves with real or fictitious attachments to an imaginary homeland, the identity problems of dispersed minorities with no territorial claims and the aspirations of indigenous communities, tribes or ethnicities. The essays in this volume offer a rich menu: the evolution of Naga nationalism, the construction of the territory-less Sylheti identity, the debates over Pashtun nationalism in Pakistan, the evolution of Muslim nationalism in Sri Lanka, the politics of religious minorities in Bangladesh and Pakistan, the making of minority politics in India, and questions of Islam and nationalism in colonial India. It is an eclectic mix for students of nationalism, politics, modern history and anyone interested in the evolution of South Asia. This book was published as a special issue of South Asian History and Culture.

Download or read book Modernity and Culture written by Leila Fawaz and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-15 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the 1890s and 1920s, cities in the vast region stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean were experiencing political, social, economic, and cultural changes that had been set in motion at least since the early nineteenth century. As the age of pre-colonial empires gave way to colonial and national states, there was a sense that a particular liberalism of culture and economy had been irretrievably lost to a more intolerant age. Avoiding such dichotomies as East/West and modernity/tradition, this book provides a comparative analysis of contested versions of the concept of modernity. The book examines not only the "high" culture of scholars and the literati, but also popular music, the visual arts, and journalism. The contributors incorporate discussion of the way in which the business in both commodities and ideas was conducted in the increasingly cosmopolitan cities of the time.

Based on an abundance of rarely used archival material, the book sheds new light on diversities related to the princely states such as health policies and practices, gender issues, the states’ military contribution or the mechanisms for controlling or integrating the states. Contributions are from international, reputable scholars, and they present historiographic, analytical and methodological approaches, placing attention to concepts, theories and sources. Inter-disciplinary in nature, this book will appeal to scholars and researchers of South Asia, studies of transnational histories, cultural and racial studies, international politics and economic history and the social history of health and medicine.
