Book Domestic Space in Britain 1750 1840

Download or read book Domestic Space in Britain 1750 1840 written by Freya Gowrley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1750 and 1840, the home took on unprecedented social and emotional significance. Focusing on the design, decoration, and reception of a range of elite and middling class homes from this period, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 demonstrates that the material culture of domestic life was central to how this function of the home was experienced, expressed, and understood at this time. Examining craft production and collection, gift exchange and written description, inheritance and loss, it carefully unpacks the material processes that made the home a focus for contemporaries' social and emotional lives. The first book on its subject, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 employs methodologies from both art history and material culture studies to examine previously unpublished interiors, spaces, texts, images, and objects. Utilising extensive archival research; visual, material, and textual analysis; and histories of emotion, sociability, and materiality, it sheds light on the decoration and reception of a broad array of domestic spaces. In so doing, it writes a new history of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century domestic space, establishing the materiality of the home as a crucial site for identity formation, social interaction, and emotional expression.

Book Uses of Education

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Bygrave
  • Publisher : Bucknell University Press
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 0838757251
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book Uses of Education written by Stephen Bygrave and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is education for? The question framed in the second half of the eighteenth century in England is still urgent. Posed in textbooks, histories, conduct books, economic treatises, novels, and other kinds of writing, it was asked about punishment, the classical curriculum, the low status of teachers, education of the poor, public school or private tutor, and the education of girls. Uses of Education shows the fundamental question to be about the potential and limits of Enlightenment thought as it seeks to be embodied in institutions.

Book Medicine and Charity in Georgian Bath

Download or read book Medicine and Charity in Georgian Bath written by Anne Borsay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this rewarding volume offers a close and systematic analysis of the General Infirmary at Bath, which was founded in 1739 to grant ‘lepers and cripples, and other indigent strangers’ access to the spa waters. Four main themes are pursued in order to locate the hospital within its economic, socio-cultural and political contexts: arrangements for management and finance under the conditions of a prospering commercial economy; the rewards and restrictions experienced by the physicians and surgeons who donated their professional services free of charge; and the constructions of an integrated social and political élite around the physical and moral rehabilitation of the sick poor. In this way, the example of Bath – a stylish resort whose visitors and residents exemplified the dynamic of fashionable philanthropy – is used to open up issues of significance to our understanding of Georgian Britain as a whole.

Book Public Life and the Propertied Englishman 1689 1798

Download or read book Public Life and the Propertied Englishman 1689 1798 written by Paul Langford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a major reassessment of the place of the propertied class in eighteenth-century England. The common view of politics in this period is one of aristocratic dominance coexisting with plebeian vitality. Langford explores the terrain which lay between the high ground of elite rule and the low ground of popular politics, and shows that the Georgians were more active in this arena than is generally appreciated.

Book Perspectives on Imperialism and Decolonization

Download or read book Perspectives on Imperialism and Decolonization written by R. F. Holland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984. These essays have been collected to mark the retirement of Freddie Madden. The contributors have, at various times, been associated with him either as pupils or colleagues during his four decades at Oxford. Their articles, in the diversity of subject-matter and time-span which they encompass, reflect the catholic historical sympathy which was always Freddie Madden's hallmark as a historian; whilst their coherence around the central theme of the growth and demise of Western empire testify to the vitality of that imperial historiographic tradition which was the preeminent concern of his activities both as teacher and scholar.

Book How to Create the Perfect Wife

Download or read book How to Create the Perfect Wife written by Wendy Moore and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating tale of one man's mission to groom his ideal mate. Thomas Day, an 18th-century British writer and radical, knew exactly the sort of woman he wanted to marry. Pure and virginal, yet tough and hardy, and completely subervient to his whims. But after being rejected by a number of spirited young women, Day concluded that the perfect partner he envisioned simply did not exist in frivolous, fashion-obsessed Georgian society. Rather than conceding defeat and giving up on his search for the woman of his dreams, however, Day set out to create her. So begins the extraordinary true story at the heart of How to Create the Perfect Wife. A few days after he turned twenty-one and inherited a large fortune, Day adopted two young orphans from the Founding Hospital and, guided by the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the principles of the Enlightenment, attempted to teach them to be model wives. Day's peculiar experiment inevitably backfired -- though not before he had taken his theories about marriage, education, and femininity to shocking extremes. Stranger than fiction, blending tragedy and farce, How to Create the Perfect Wife is an engrossing tale of the radicalism -- and deep contradictions -- at the heart of the enlightenment.
