Book Britain s Encounter with Meiji Japan 1868 1912

Download or read book Britain s Encounter with Meiji Japan 1868 1912 written by Olive Checkland and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-09-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Meiji Era, of 1868-1912, British influence in Japan was stronger than that of any other foreign power. Although role models were sought from Englishmen and Scotsmen, whether diplomats, engineers, educators or philosophers, the first priority for the Japanese was to achieve a transfer of industrial and technical skills. As important customers, who brought good profits to British industry, the Japanese were accommodated when they stipulated on awarding a contract that their own people should work in office, shipyard or factory. Much new research material discovered in Japan, England and Scotland has enabled the detailed examination of a relationship - with Britain as Senior and Japan as Junior partner - which lasted until 1914. It was on these foundations that Japan was able subsequently to build a great industrial nation.

Book Nishi Amane and Modern Japanese Thought

Download or read book Nishi Amane and Modern Japanese Thought written by Thomas R.H. Havens and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nineteenth-century aristocrat, Nishi Amane (1829-1897) was one of the first Japanese to assert the supremacy of Western culture. He was sent by his government to Leiden to study the European social sciences; on his return to Japan shortly before the climactic Meiji Restoration of 1868 he introduced and adapted European utilitarianism and positivism to his country's intellectual world. To modernize, Nishi held, Japan must cast off the bonds of the Confucian world-view in order to adopt new principles of empirical scholarly investigation and new standards of self-improvement. Though a Confucian by upbringing, Nishi became thoroughly committed to Western intellectual values in his programs for the new Japanese society. In his roles of teacher, writer, and government administrator, he was influential at one of the most critical times in Japan’s history. Originally published in 1970. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Download or read book Japan and China written by Matsuda Wataru and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume ties together the histories of Japan and China for the modern period prior to the 20th century. The chapters look at Chinese and Japanese works which were written in response to events in the other country. None of these works has received any sustained attention in the west. As a result we get a view of how Chinese and Japanese saw each other at a time when there were few personal contacts allowed. Many of these texts were built on fanciful embellishments of stories that migrated from one land to the other. But the unique qualities of the Sino-Japanese cultural bond seem to have conditioned the interaction so that these texts all reveal a fascinatingly well-defined area.

Book excerpt: The study of modern China and Japan have separately become major arenas of scholarship over the past three decades in the west, but little work has been done that brings these two histories together for the period prior to the twentieth century. This work does just that. Many of these texts were built on fanciful embellishments of stories that migrated from one land to the other, but the unique qualities of the Sino-Japanese cultural bond seem to have conditioned the interaction.
