Book excerpt: The oil palm is a remarkable crop, producing around 40% of the world’s vegetable oil from around 6% of the land devoted to oil crops. Conventional breeding has clearly been the major focus of genetic improvement in this crop. A mix of improved agronomy and management, coupled with breeding selection have quadrupled the oil yield of the crop since breeding began in earnest in the 1920s. However, as for all perennial crops with long breeding cycles, oil palm faces immense challenges in the coming years with increased pressure from population growth, climate change and the need to develop environmentally sustainable oil palm plantations. In Oil Palm: Breeding, Genetics and Genomics, world leading organizations and individuals who have been at the forefront of developments in this crop, provide their insights and experiences of oil palm research, while examining the different challenges that face the future of the oil palm. The editors have all been involved in research and breeding of oil palm for many years and use their knowledge of the crop and their disciplinary expertise to provide context and to introduce the different research topics covered.

Book excerpt: This book clarifies the direction of business innovation using new ICT such as the Internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), smartphones, and cloud computing through a series of case studies on successful trials and advanced businesses in the Asia-Pacific where many industry sectors have been growing successfully in the 21st century. ICT has been playing an important role in value creation for customers and in profit generation for providers, contributing to various service innovation and business innovation. Now, digitalization using IoT and AI provides solutions to address various issues in the human society, which is transforming services and businesses in the 21st century. “What is the direction of the business innovation using new ICT?” is a highly concerned question for business researchers and practitioners. Aiming to answer the question, this book conducts a number of cases studies in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, as well as Australia. Among the studies, there are 4 cases from ICT providers, 4 cases from traditional and services, and 6 cases from new ICT applications and businesses. Each case analyzes social needs and human desires, new value created, roles of new technologies, processes and difficulties in developing new businesses, the relationship among customers, providers, and stakeholders, value chain co-creation and optimization, factors of success, and business models. Finally, the direction of business innovation with new ICT in the Asia-Pacific is suggested by summarizing the findings from the case studies through the lens of the theoretical analysis in service science.

Book Malaysia s State Formation

Download or read book Malaysia s State Formation written by Abdillah Noh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing Malaysia’s political economy since 1800, Abdillah Noh argues that it has been substantially path-dependant based on choices made by the British colonial administration. Focusing mainly on two major groupings in Malaysia’s political economy – the Malays and Chinese Malaysians – Noh demonstrates that British policies engendered two processes. First, a less-than-full-retrenchment of Malay political dominance by preserving Malay de jure power and, second a less-than-full incorporation of new actors in Malaya’s political economy. Such decisions to preserve Malay de jure power alongside half-hearted measures at incorporating non-Malays’ economic and political presence created communities with mutually exclusive institutions that increasingly compete for access to political, social and economic resources. He thus reasons that Malaysia’s state formation - and the consequent consociational logic - is not a contrived act that was hatched at the point of its independence. Rather, it is the result of deep institutional processes that are centred on the idea of path dependence, self- reinforcement mechanism, timing and sequence. A valuable read for scholars of Malaysian history and politics, as well as for scholars of postcolonial state formation and public policy more broadly.

Book A Case Based Approach to Interventional Pulmonology A Focus on Asian Perspectives

Download or read book A Case Based Approach to Interventional Pulmonology A Focus on Asian Perspectives written by Jamalul Azizi Abdul Rahaman and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Case-Based Approach to Interventional Pulmonology: A Focus on Asian Perspectives focuses on various aspects of Interventional Pulmonology (IP) based on clinical case scenarios. Today, evidence-based medicine and statistics are ruling our daily practice. Thus, each case is unique regardless of what the theory predicts. This asian perspective of Interventional Pulmonology (IP) is also of great importance, given the differences in the etiologies compared to other regions of the world. Asia being the leading region in terms of population and the high incidence of certain airway and lung diseases, is an amazing source for fundamental and clinical research. The contents of the book have been divided into four different sections with a primary aim of case-based scenarios and solutions. Section A consists of diagnostic IP procedures like linear and radial EBUS, navigation bronchoscopy, bronchoscopic lung cryobiopsy (BLC) and cone beam CT. Section B focuses on therapeutic rigid bronchoscopic procedures. Besides airway stenting and laser bronchoscopy, this discusses recent interventions such as bronchial thermoplasty, bronchoscopic lung volume reduction, 3D printing and microwave ablation. Section C is dedicated to pleural procedures focusing on indwelling pleural catheters (IPC) and fibrinolytics. Section D is dedicated to common paediatric IP procedures. Each case is presented with the history, including clinical, radiological, bronchoscopic/pleuroscopic findings and final outcomes. Many of these cases also have video illustrations. This book will be of great value to interventional pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, surgical oncologists, and interventional radiologists.
