Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although epilepsy is one of the nation's most common neurological disorders, public understanding of it is limited. Many people do not know the causes of epilepsy or what they should do if they see someone having a seizure. Epilepsy is a complex spectrum of disorders that affects an estimated 2.2 million Americans in a variety of ways, and is characterized by unpredictable seizures that differ in type, cause, and severity. Yet living with epilepsy is about much more than just seizures; the disorder is often defined in practical terms, such as challenges in school, uncertainties about social situations and employment, limitations on driving, and questions about independent living. The Institute of Medicine was asked to examine the public health dimensions of the epilepsies, focusing on public health surveillance and data collection; population and public health research; health policy, health care, and human services; and education for people with the disorder and their families, health care providers, and the public. In Epilepsy Across the Spectrum, the IOM makes recommendations ranging from the expansion of collaborative epilepsy surveillance efforts, to the coordination of public awareness efforts, to the engagement of people with epilepsy and their families in education, dissemination, and advocacy for improved care and services. Taking action across multiple dimensions will improve the lives of people with epilepsy and their families. The realistic, feasible, and action-oriented recommendations in this report can help enable short- and long-term improvements for people with epilepsy. For all epilepsy organizations and advocates, local, state, and federal agencies, researchers, health care professionals, people with epilepsy, as well as the public, Epilepsy Across the Spectrum is an essential resource.

Book excerpt: This diary will help your doctor diagnose and manage the type of epilepsy you experience and the medication that could help you. It will also be useful for finding out your warning signs or auras and the possible triggers of your seizures. The medication history and seizure charts will help you and your doctor keep track of the evolution of the epilepsy. This Diary Contains: Seizure Chart. Calendar where you can easily view the evolution of your seizures. Medication History. Manage your medication and doses. Notes. Space for notes. Seizure Details. Easy to fill pages where you record all important details that happened around a seizure. Warning signs At the start or right before a seizure occurs you may experience specific feelings, smells, tastes, memory lapses, daydreaming or jerking movements. Being aware of your specific warnings will allow you to prevent seizures and to position yourself so that the seizure is less likely to hurt you. Triggers Triggers are certain situations that make it more likely for the person with epilepsy to have a seizure. Not all seizures are caused by triggers and some types of epileptic seizures are more likely to have triggers than others. Knowing what triggers your seizures can help you recognize when a seizure may be coming and help you be prepared to lessen the chance that one may occur. Keeping track of your circumstances when you have a seizure can help you figure out what your triggers are. You should also have in mind that when you believe something is a trigger, you might get stressed when you experience it, causing you a seizure. In this case you will not know if the trigger was the apparent trigger or the stress itself. To avoid these situations, it is recommended to keep calm when you experience a possible trigger. Mindful breathing and meditation are techniques used to achieve this calmness. The most common triggers are alcohol consumption, stress, missing medication and sleep deprivation.

Download or read book Epilepsy written by Hans Lüders and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epilepsy is among the most common scourges afflicting the health of humankind and perhaps the most terrifying. In one form or another, it is suffered by one in everyone hundred people on earth, with a disproportionate prevalence at the early and late extremes of life. There is nothing sacred or sanctifying about it in spite of Hippoc rates' terming epilepsy "The Sacred Disease" in a famous treatise. There is nothing ennobling about it despite its occasional designa tion as a "noble disorder" by virtue of i ts having affected the likes of Alexander of Macedon, Julius Caesar and other persons of royal lineage. From time to time, epilepsy is hailed as a condition which is artistically inspirational; Fyodor Dostoyevsky's dependence on his own personal experience with complex partial epilepsy as a source of imagery in the transfiguration scenes of The Brothers Karamazov and as a source of experience in The Idiot is often cited in this respect. In fact, for all its victims in human history, epilepsy has been a sad burden which has disrupted and shortened life, causing suffering and castigation for the duration of their terrestrial journey.

Book Pharmacoresistance in Epilepsy

Download or read book Pharmacoresistance in Epilepsy written by Luisa Rocha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although more than 10 new antiepileptic drugs have been developed in the past decade, epilepsy remains resistant to drug therapy in about one third of patients, many of whom struggle with the disease their entire lives. Managing these patients is a challenge and requires a structured multidisciplinary approach. The book includes chapters on all issues related to pharmacoresistance in epilepsy and describes recent developments in the pathogenesis and treatment of this disorder. It addresses abnormalities in inhibitory mechanisms, epilepsy-related changes to the immune system, development of pharmacoresistance caused by chronic exposure to antiepileptic drugs, and novel therapeutic strategies for preventing or slowing down the progression of the disease. Clinicians and basic scientists alike will find up-to-date information on the development of pharmacoesistance, as well as reviews of mechanisms associated with epilepsy that may help them consider novel strategies for preventing the development of pharmacoresistance in the first place. The book also features information on new therapeutic strategies for control of epilepsy, such as transcutaneous electrical stimulation and virtual screening of new antiepileptic drugs. Pharmacoresistance in Epilepsy: From Genes and Molecules to Promising Therapies is useful to anyone working in the field, whether they’re studying epilepsy in the lab or treating it in a doctor’s office.”

Book Eyelid Myoclonia with Absences

Download or read book Eyelid Myoclonia with Absences written by John S. Duncan and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 1996 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eyelid myoclonia with absences is a recently described and under-recognised syndrome of idiopathic generalised epilepsy. This book summarises current knowledge on the topic; covering the underlying anatomy and physiology of the eyelids, the clinical and electro-encephalographic features and differential diagnosis in children and adults, including a discussion on the issue of self-induction of absences. The current state of knowledge on inheritance and genetics of the condition and treatment strategies are considered. Throughout, recent advances in the field are couched in an historical context, making this book a comprehensive source for all those who need to understand this syndrome whether from a research standpoint or the clinical management of affected children and adults. As such it will be of value to neurologists, epileptologists and those involved in the care and treatment of epileptic patients.
