Book Wind Systems in the Dead Sea and Footprints in Seismic Records

Download or read book Wind Systems in the Dead Sea and Footprints in Seismic Records written by Lott, Friederike Franziska and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric processes, such as wind, impact the ground motion of the earth and have the potential to induce strong broad-band noise in seismological records. In order to quantify the influence of wind on ground motion velocity joint seismological and meteorological measurements were conducted at the Dead Sea.Results reveal a pronounced impact of wind on seismological records. A methodology is presented to account for the dependency of PSD of ground motion velocity on the horizontal wind field.

Book Seismic Events in Glaciers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marek Górski
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-09-20
  • ISBN : 3642318517
  • Pages : 109 pages

Download or read book Seismic Events in Glaciers written by Marek Górski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occurrence of seismic events in glaciers has been an issue in the scientific literature since the early 1950s, following the report about icequakes in Baffin Island. Targeted seismological studies were undertaken by the Polish Expedition to Spitsbergen in 1962 and then continued at various glaciers in the Arctic, Antarctic and the Alps. The author of the book has been engaged in the project since 1970; he designed the layout of observations and instrumentation. The quakes he observed were categorized into two groups: typical seismic events called icequakes, and relatively long-period events named ice vibrations. In the case of icequakes, the space-time distributions and focal parameters were determined. In the case of ice vibrations, a spectral analysis was made. The present book is a synthesis of the results obtained. There are reports that the number of seismic events in glaciers has recently grown, which may be related to changing geometry of glaciers due to changing thermal conditions.

Book Forensic Seismology and Nuclear Test Bans

Download or read book Forensic Seismology and Nuclear Test Bans written by Alan Douglas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the signing in 1996 of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, interest has grown in forensic seismology: the application of seismology to nuclear test ban verification. This book, based on over 50 years of experience in forensic seismology research, charts the development of methods of seismic data analysis. Topics covered include: the estimation of seismic magnitudes, travel-time tables and epicentres; seismic signal processing; and the use of seismometer arrays. Fully illustrated with seismograms from explosions and earthquakes, the book demonstrates methods and problems of visual analysis. Each chapter provides exercises to help the reader familiarise themselves with practical issues in the field of forensic seismology, and figures and solutions to exercises are also available online. The book is a key reference work for academic researchers and specialists in the area of forensic seismology and Earth structure, and will also be valuable to postgraduates in seismology and solid earth geophysics.
