Book Friction based Control System for Seismic Energy Dissipation with Isolated Stories

Download or read book Friction based Control System for Seismic Energy Dissipation with Isolated Stories written by Charalampos Iliadis and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implementation of various structural control systems, such as passive, semi-active or active is not a new concept. They are incorporated in structures to increase the performance under seismic and/or wind loading either by adding stiffness or inducing counteracting forces which dissipate energy in various ways. In order to efficiently dissipate the seismic energy with existing schemes, large structural displacements are required. However, structures that are most vulnerable to earthquakes such as low-rise relatively stiff buildings, cannot experience significant displacements. Therein lies the challenge the author attempts to address by proposing a structural scheme which can be applied to low-rise concrete buildings to efficiently dissipate seismic energy and at the same time to considerably decrease the forces in the structural members for a given seismic excitation. In this thesis the design of this new structural scheme is described and a case study is performed in order to demonstrate its effectiveness and applicability.

Book Seismic Design with Supplemental Energy Dissipation Devices

Download or read book Seismic Design with Supplemental Energy Dissipation Devices written by Robert D. Hanson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this monograph is to impart basic concepts of the supplemental energy dissipation technology to design engineers, architects, and building officials so they can understand its benefits and limitations in structural applications. The approach is introductory. References are cited throughout the monograph for readers who wish to study the subject in more depth.Supplemental energy dissipation systems are recent innovations to improve earthquake building performance. Research has led to a better understanding of the effects of supplemental energy dissipation on the earthquake response of buildings. Over the last 20 years, significant progress has been made in developing manufactured systems. They are being reliably designed and installed in new as well as existing buildings.Development of design codes and standards for energy dissipation systems has progressed slowly. This monograph summarizes information on their use in designing new earthquake-resistant buildings and upgrading the seismic performance of existing buildings. The following areas are covered:? The physical consequences of adding energy dissipation systems to a structure for various types of input motion? Summary of generic energy dissipation device characteristics? Summary of pros and cons of specific device characteristics in meeting selected design objectives? Seismic design limits for selecting energy dissipation systems? Design approaches for the limits of elastic or inelastic response
