Book Preventing Earthquake Disasters The Grand Challenge in Earthquake Engineering

Download or read book Preventing Earthquake Disasters The Grand Challenge in Earthquake Engineering written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-12-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES), administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is scheduled to become operational in 2004. These network sites will perform a range of experiments to test and validate complex computer models being developed to simulate the behavior of structures subjected to earthquakes. To assist in this effort, the NSF requested the National Research Council(NRC) to frame the major questions to be addressed by and to develop a long-term research agenda for NEES. Preventing Earthquake Disasters presents an overview of the grand challenge including six critical research problems making up that challenge. The report also provides an assessment of earthquake engineering research issues and the role of information technology in that research effort, and a research plan for NEES.

Download or read book The Marine Seismic Source written by G.E. Parkes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about marine seismic sources, their history, their physical principles and their deconvolution. It is particularly accented towards the physical aspects rather than the mathematical principles of signature generation in water as it is these aspects which the authors have found to be somewhat neglected. A huge amount of research has been carried out by both commercial and academic institutions over the years and the resulting literature is a little daunting, to say the least. In spite of this, the subject is intrinsically very simple and relies on a very few fundamental physical principles, a somewhat larger number of heuristic principles and a refreshingly small amount of blunderbuss mathematics. As such it is still one of those subjects in which the gifted practical engineer reigns supreme and from which many of the important advances have originated. In Chapter 1 of the book, the underlying physics and concepts are discussed, including pressure and wave propagation, bubble motion, virtual images and the factors determining choice of source. In marine reflection seismology, almost all of the seismic data acquired currently is done with either the airgun or the watergun, which rely on the expulsion of air and water respectively to generate acoustic energy. As a consequence, the discussion in this chapter is geared towards these two sources, as is much of the rest of the book.

Download or read book Marine Geophysics written by E. J. W. Jones and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1999-10-18 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a comprehensive review of techniques used to explore the oceans and examines what geophysical observations reveal about the structure and tectonics of the seabed and the Earth's interior. Exploration of the oceans using geophysical methods has had a profound effect on the way we view the structure of the earth and its behaviour through geological time. Geophysics has also played a vital role in the search for petroleum and other natural resources lying beneath the seabed. This volume looks at: * the means of locating observations accurately and determining in detail the morphology of the sea floor * the powerful seismic techniques for imaging the Earth's interior from shallow coastal areas to deep-sea trenches * the gravity and magnetic fields over the oceans, heat flow, electrical and radiometric methods and measurements in offshore boreholes * geophysical observations on the development of the modern oceans, the structure of their deep basins, and the nature of their aseismic and seismically active margins. This book will be of interest to marine scientists and advanced undergraduates and postgraduates following courses on, or undertaking research in, geophysics, marine geology, oceanography, physical sciences, remote sensing, marine surveying and offshore engineering.

Book Tsunami Generation and Propagation

Download or read book Tsunami Generation and Propagation written by Tatsuhiko Saito and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a framework of tsunami modelling from generation to propagation, aimed at application to the new observation started in Japan after the devastating tsunami of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. About 150 seismic and tsunami sensors were deployed in a wide region off the Pacific coast of eastern Japan in order to catch tsunami generation inside the focal area, which makes a clear departure from conventional observations that detect tsunamis far from the source region. In order to exploit the full potential of this new observation system, it is not enough to model tsunami generation simply by static sea-bottom deformation caused by an earthquake. This book explains dynamic tsunami generation and sea-bottom deformation by kinematic earthquake faulting, in which seismic and acoustic waves are also included in addition to static sea-bottom deformation. It then systematically derives basic tsunami equations from the fundamental equations of motions. The author also illustrates the details of numerical schemes and their applications to tsunami records, making sound linkages among these topics to naturally understand how a tsunami is physically or mathematically described. This book will be a comprehensive guide for graduate students and young researchers to start their research activities smoothly.

Book Earthquake Research and Analysis

Download or read book Earthquake Research and Analysis written by Sebastiano D'Amico and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to different aspects of earthquake research. Depending on their magnitude and the placement of the hypocenter, earthquakes have the potential to be very destructive. Given that they can cause significant losses and deaths, it is really important to understand the process and the physics of this phenomenon. This book does not focus on a unique problem in earthquake processes, but spans studies on historical earthquakes and seismology in different tectonic environments, to more applied studies on earthquake geology.
