Book Seismic Refraction Studies in the Baltic Shield Along the Fennolora Profile

Download or read book Seismic Refraction Studies in the Baltic Shield Along the Fennolora Profile written by Md. Anowar Hossain and published by Coronet Books. This book was released on 1989 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crustal structure of the Baltic Shield has been studied based on travel-time analysis of P and S-wave data recorded from the Fennolora deep seismic sounding profile. The derived velocity-depth models show several low-velocity zones in the upper crust along the profile. The velocity reduction in these zones is to be less than 7%. crust with varying thicknesses of about 13, 11 and 19-26 km, respectively. The velocity gradient is lower in the middle crust compared to that in the upper and lower crust. The P velocity increases from about 6 km/s at the surface to 6.4 km/s in the middle crust. In the lower crust, velocity varies from about 6.7 km/s to 7.3 km/s. The Moho velocity, below the crust, is to be higher than 8 km/s. The depth to the Moho varies considerably, variations on the order of about 10 km. as high as 0.28 close to the surface and decreased to below 0.25 at about 2 km depth. In the deeper part of the upper crust and in the middle crust, o appears to be about 0.24 and increases slightly to about 0.25 in the lower crust. At the Moho boundary, o increases to about 0.26 and decreases to 0.25 beneath the Moho.

Book Exploring the Earth s Crust

Download or read book Exploring the Earth s Crust written by C. Prodehl and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2012 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume contains a comprehensive, worldwide history of seismological studies of the Earth's crust using controlled sources from 1850 to 2005. Essentially all major seismic projects on land and the most important oceanic projects are covered. The time period 1850 to 1939 is presented as a general synthesis, and from 1940 onward the history and results are presented in separate chapters for each decade, with the material organized by geographical region. Each chapter highlights the major advances achieved during that decade in terms of data acquisition, processing technology, and interpretation methods. For all major seismic projects, the authors provide specific details on field observations, interpreted crustal cross sections, and key references. They conclude with global and continental-scale maps of all field measurements and interpreted Moho contours. An accompanying DVD contains important out-of-print publications and an extensive collection of controlled-source data, location maps, and crustal cross sections."--Publisher's description.

Book Treatise on Geophysics

Download or read book Treatise on Geophysics written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 5604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics, Second Edition, is a comprehensive and in-depth study of the physics of the Earth beyond what any geophysics text has provided previously. Thoroughly revised and updated, it provides fundamental and state-of-the-art discussion of all aspects of geophysics. A highlight of the second edition is a new volume on Near Surface Geophysics that discusses the role of geophysics in the exploitation and conservation of natural resources and the assessment of degradation of natural systems by pollution. Additional features include new material in the Planets and Moon, Mantle Dynamics, Core Dynamics, Crustal and Lithosphere Dynamics, Evolution of the Earth, and Geodesy volumes. New material is also presented on the uses of Earth gravity measurements. This title is essential for professionals, researchers, professors, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Geophysics and Earth system science. Comprehensive and detailed coverage of all aspects of geophysics Fundamental and state-of-the-art discussions of all research topics Integration of topics into a coherent whole

Book Treatise on Geochemistry

Download or read book Treatise on Geochemistry written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-10-19 with total page 14787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively updated new edition of the widely acclaimed Treatise on Geochemistry has increased its coverage beyond the wide range of geochemical subject areas in the first edition, with five new volumes which include: the history of the atmosphere, geochemistry of mineral deposits, archaeology and anthropology, organic geochemistry and analytical geochemistry. In addition, the original Volume 1 on "Meteorites, Comets, and Planets" was expanded into two separate volumes dealing with meteorites and planets, respectively. These additions increased the number of volumes in the Treatise from 9 to 15 with the index/appendices volume remaining as the last volume (Volume 16). Each of the original volumes was scrutinized by the appropriate volume editors, with respect to necessary revisions as well as additions and deletions. As a result, 27% were republished without major changes, 66% were revised and 126 new chapters were added. In a many-faceted field such as Geochemistry, explaining and understanding how one sub-field relates to another is key. Instructors will find the complete overviews with extensive cross-referencing useful additions to their course packs and students will benefit from the contextual organization of the subject matter Six new volumes added and 66% updated from 1st edition. The Editors of this work have taken every measure to include the many suggestions received from readers and ensure comprehensiveness of coverage and added value in this 2nd edition The esteemed Board of Volume Editors and Editors-in-Chief worked cohesively to ensure a uniform and consistent approach to the content, which is an amazing accomplishment for a 15-volume work (16 volumes including index volume)!
