Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, earth modeling has become a major investigative tool for evaluating the potential of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Earth modelling must now face new challenges since petroleum exploration no longer consists in only investigating newly identified resources, but also in re-evaluating the potential of previously investigated reservoirs in the light of new prospecting data and of revised interpretations. Earth models incorporate a variety of different interpretations made on various types of data at successive steps of the modeling process. However, current modeling procedures provide no way to link a range of data and interpretations with a final earth model. For this reason, sharing and exchanging information about the model building process is at present a major difficulty. Recently, the term “Shared Earth Modeling” has been used for expressing the idea that earth models should be built in such a way that experts and end users can have access, at any time, to all the information incorporated into the model. This information does not only concern the data, but also the knowledge that geoscientists produce by interpreting these data. Accordingly, practical solutions must be studied for operating a knowledge-driven approach of Shared Earth Modeling. This is the goal of this book. This study of earth subsurface modeling is intended for several categories of readers. It concerns in the first place geologists, engineers and managers involved in the study and evaluation of subsurface reservoirs and hydrocarbon exploration. Relying on recent progress in various fields of computer sciences, the authors present innovative solutions for solving the critical issue of knowledge exchange at key steps of the modeling process. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to construct a geologic and geophysical model of the Hunter modeling domain on the western slope of the San Rafael Swell near Castle Dale, Utah. The purpose of developing this model is to aid in CO2 migration simulations for carbon sequestration which has the potential to offset greenhouse gases and aid in the fight against global warming. The model is intended to help understand the lateral and vertical migration potential of a CO2 plume by understanding formation structures such as dip angle and faulting. The geophysical model aided building the geologic structure model by providing inter-well control of formation horizons. This study investigates the geologic and geophysical properties of the modeling domain with the use of well tops, well log data, outcrop points, 2D seismic profiles and velocity stacking data.This research resulted in a 30 square mile (48 km2) geologic model characterized by conformable geologic formations that dip southwesterly ~2.4° and thicken to the southwest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic forward modeling studies are required for adequately imaging complex geological structures, such as folds, faults, and domes. Many U.S. Gulf Coast salt domes are used for oil and gas exploration, brine production, and underground hydrocarbon storage. For this reason, it is crucial to image the flank of the salt domes and surrounding sediments. Allied Geophysical Laboratories (AGL) carried out a 2-D seismic study in the Texas Brine Company facility to image the Pierce Junction salt dome. However, we were not able to image the salt flanks because of improper survey design. This led to the current study which proposes a 2-D and a 3-D seismic survey design using modeling and Reverse Time Migration (RTM) imaging. We gathered original 2-D seismic, topography, and gravity data to build 2-D and 3-D velocity models of the Pierce Junction salt dome area. We processed the original 2-D data and extracted the velocities of the cap rock and near surface sediments for use in velocity models. We modelled gravity data collected in a north-south direction and performed analyses on the synthetic seismic data to determine new 2-D conventional seismic survey parameters that could be achieved with the limited acquisition equipment of AGL. We modeled synthetic shot gathers by a finite difference method using the full (two-way) acoustic wave equation, and generated seismic images using the Reverse Time Migration (RTM) method. We determined the optimum parameters of the new 2-D seismic survey by reviewing the quality of the results. These parameters were able to adequately image the salt dome and its surrounding sediments. We then modified the 2-D parameters for a new 3-D survey, and obtained synthetic RTM images based on the 3-D velocity model. Optimal 2-D and 3-D seismic survey designs for the Pierce Junction salt dome area were achieved using seismic modeling and RTM imaging. We found RTM imaging to be a novel and powerful method for determining seismic survey parameters for complex geological structures.

Book excerpt: Seismic reservoir characterization aims to build 3-dimensional models of rock and fluid properties, including elastic and petrophysical variables, to describe and monitor the state of the subsurface for hydrocarbon exploration and production and for CO2 sequestration. Rock physics modeling and seismic wave propagation theory provide a set of physical equations to predict the seismic response of subsurface rocks based on their elastic and petrophysical properties. However, the rock and fluid properties are generally unknown and surface geophysical measurements are often the only available data to constrain reservoir models far away from well control. Therefore, reservoir properties are generally estimated from geophysical data as a solution of an inverse problem, by combining rock physics and seismic models with inverse theory and geostatistical methods, in the context of the geological modeling of the subsurface. A probabilistic approach to the inverse problem provides the probability distribution of rock and fluid properties given the measured geophysical data and allows quantifying the uncertainty of the predicted results. The reservoir characterization problem includes both discrete properties, such as facies or rock types, and continuous properties, such as porosity, mineral volumes, fluid saturations, seismic velocities and density. Seismic Reservoir Modeling: Theory, Examples and Algorithms presents the main concepts and methods of seismic reservoir characterization. The book presents an overview of rock physics models that link the petrophysical properties to the elastic properties in porous rocks and a review of the most common geostatistical methods to interpolate and simulate multiple realizations of subsurface properties conditioned on a limited number of direct and indirect measurements based on spatial correlation models. The core of the book focuses on Bayesian inverse methods for the prediction of elastic petrophysical properties from seismic data using analytical and numerical statistical methods. The authors present basic and advanced methodologies of the current state of the art in seismic reservoir characterization and illustrate them through expository examples as well as real data applications to hydrocarbon reservoirs and CO2 sequestration studies.
