Book Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Technology VII

Download or read book Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Technology VII written by M. Yang and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 1428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering technology is of crucial importance to the infrastructure on which modern societies depend, and keeping abreast of the latest research and developments in the field is of vital importance. This book presents the proceedings of HCET 2022, the 7th International Technical Conference on Frontiers of Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Technology, originally due to be held, in Sanya, China, from 25-27 September 2022, but instead held as a fully virtual event on Zoom due to continued uncertainty related to the Covid 19 pandemic. HCET is a platform for the dissemination of research results on the latest advances in the areas of hydraulic and civil engineering technology and environmental engineering, and provides an opportunity for scientists, researchers and engineers from around the world to exchange their findings, discuss developments, and possibly establish a basis for collaboration. A total of 275 submissions were received from international contributors, and all were subjected to a rigorous peer-review process, with each paper reviewed by a minimum of two experts. Papers were also checked for quality and plagiarism, after which, 163 papers were accepted for presentation and publication. Topics covered include the research and development of concrete structure design and analysis, structural mechanics and structural engineering, geological exploration and earthquake engineering, building technology, urban planning, energy, environment and advanced engineering science and applications. The book offers a state-of-the-art overview of recent developments, and will be of interest to all those working in the fields of hydraulic and civil engineering technology.

Book Modeling Spatial and Economic Impacts of Disasters

Download or read book Modeling Spatial and Economic Impacts of Disasters written by Yasuhide Okuyama and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is dedicated to the memory of Barclay G. Jones, Professor of City and Regional Planning and Regional Science at Cornell University. Over a decade ago, Barclay took on a fledgling area of study - economic modeling of disasters - and nurtured its early development. He served as the social science program director at the National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER), a university consortium sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency of the United States. In this capacity, Barclay shepherded and attracted a number of regional scientists to the study of disasters. He organized a conference, held in the ill-fated World Trade Center in September 1995, on "The Economic Consequences of Earthquakes: Preparing for the Unexpected. " He persistently advocated the importance of social science research in an establishment dominated by less-than-sympathetic natural scientists and engineers. In 1993, Barclay organized the first of a series of sessions on "Measuring Regional Economic Effects of Unscheduled Events" at the North American Meetings of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI). This unusual nomenclature brought attention to the challenge that disasters -largely unanticipated, often sudden, and always disorderly - pose to the regional science modeling tradition. The sessions provided an annual forum for a growing coalition of researchers, where previously the literature had been fragmentary, scattered, and episodic. Since Barclay's unexpected passing in 1997, we have continued this effort in his tradition.

Book Post earthquake Traffic Capacity of Modern Bridges in California

Download or read book Post earthquake Traffic Capacity of Modern Bridges in California written by Vesna Terzic and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The test results were then used to calibrate a finite element model of a bridge column. This bridge column model was incorporated into a hybrid model of a typical California overpass bridge and tested using the hybrid simulation technique. The finite element model of the typical California overpass bridge was validated using the data from hybrid simulations. The validated model of the typical bridge was used to evaluate its post-earthquake truck load capacity in an extensive parametric study that examined the effects of different ground motions and bridge modeling parameters such as the boundary conditions imposed by the bridge abutments, the location of the truck on the bridge, and the amount of bridge column residual drift. The principal outcomes of this study are the following findings.

Book Finite Element Reliability and Sensitivity Methods for Performance based Earthquake Engineering

Download or read book Finite Element Reliability and Sensitivity Methods for Performance based Earthquake Engineering written by Terje Haukaas and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work in this report is motivated by the performance-based engineering approach advocated by PEER. A comprehensive, object-oriented software framework for finite element sensitivity and reliability analysis is developed. The work builds on the existing software OpenSees. The software framework is used to investigate and address challenges particular to nonlinear finite element reliability analysis. As a result, smoothed material models, modifications in existing search algorithms, and a search algorithm hitherto not used in reliability analysis are developed.
