Book Seismic Behavior of Bridge Pier Column Lap Splices

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inadequate flexural strength and ductility, or shear strength, of concrete bridge columns have resulted in collapse or severe damage of a number of California bridges in recent moderate earth-quakes. In general, these bridges were designed prior to the new seismic design methods which were implemented in the mid-seventies. Bridges constructed in accordance with the new design methods have performed well in recent earthquakes. However, the large number of older bridges that are still in service, particularly freeway overpasses designed and constructed in the 1950's to 1970's, are now recognized to have substandard design details and to constitute a cause for major concern. The principal objective of this study is to provide basic knowledge on the performance of circular columns with noncontact lap splices at their maximum moment sections. As part of that work the validity of existing equations, (Darwin et al, 1995), for calculating the maximum bar stress (or bond strength of lap splice) at failure along the splice length is examined. Then a simple model is used to provide reasonable predictions of the response to seismic loadings of bridge columns with inadequate length lap splices at the column to foundation connection. This study involved both field and laboratory investigations. The field work involved the reversed cyclic lateral load testing to failure of four as--built large diameter circular columns which formed parts of existing bridge piers. However, due to the wide irregularities in the details of the field columns, it was not possible to determine the relative importance of the various parameters. Therefore, a laboratory investigation to examine physically what effects concrete cover, bar spacing and bar lap separation had on the behavior of columns with splices at the maximum moment region at their bases was undertaken in the Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory.

Book Seismic Performance of Column to drilled shaft Connections in Reinforced Concrete Bridges

Download or read book Seismic Performance of Column to drilled shaft Connections in Reinforced Concrete Bridges written by Michelle Teng Chang and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drilled shaft foundations are often used to support reinforced concrete bridge columns founded in soft soils or in locations where a small footprint is desired. Increasingly, the shaft is being built with a diameter larger than that of the column, to allow tolerance in the column placement and to facilitate plastic hinge formation in the column rather than in the shaft. The column-shaft connection, which involves a noncontact splice between the column and shaft bars, is a key component in this structural system. However, there is limited research on the behavior of these connections under seismic loads. In order to understand the force-transfer mechanism of column-shaft connections under seismic loading, one quasi-static cyclic experimental test was conducted on a column-shaft subassembly. Measured results were compared with those from three previous experiments performed at the University of Washington. The study found that the amount of shaft transverse reinforcement in the connection region was critical in determining the failure mode of the connection. In specimens with relatively low amounts of transverse reinforcement, including the specimen tested during this study and a previous specimen tested at the University of Washington, the connection failed through a shaft prying failure mode; the specimens developed large vertical cracks between the confined column core and the annular shaft transition region, and the shaft transverse reinforcement eventually fractured at large drift ratios. Therefore, three methodologies for detailing the shaft transverse reinforcement were evaluated, and a new analysis procedure using a strut-and-tie model was proposed. It is consistent with the measured and observed performance of the tested connections, and is applicable to shafts supporting either precast or cast-in-place columns. The new procedure allows engineers to more accurately predict the behavior of a column-shaft connection and prevent an undesirable below-ground failure in the shaft transition region. Lastly, a set of design equations based on the strut-and-tie findings and existing design models is proposed for use in practice.

Book Seismic Behavior and Retrofit of Older Reinforced Concrete Bridge T joints

Download or read book Seismic Behavior and Retrofit of Older Reinforced Concrete Bridge T joints written by Laura N. Lowes and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of experimental tests investigating the seismic response of reinforced concrete beam-column T-joints was recently completed at the University of California, Berkeley. The evaluated connection was representative of an interior beam- column joint from a multi-column bridge frame built in the late 1950's. Three one-third scale models, representing the as-built connection and two retrofit connections, were tested. The results of this research project are an improved understanding of the seismic behavior of lightly reinforced bridge T-joints as well as verification of a design procedure for retrofitting this type of connection.

Book Behavior of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Jacket Retrofitted Reinforced Concrete Bridge Columns in Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquakes

Download or read book Behavior of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Jacket Retrofitted Reinforced Concrete Bridge Columns in Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquakes written by William Nickelson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges built before the early 1970s contain seismic vulnerabilities not accounted for in older design codes. Retrofitting with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets is a commonly implemented strategy to address the seismic vulnerabilities present in previously constructed bridges. Previous research has not specifically studied behavior under Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) demands. Six CFRP jacket retrofitted concrete bridge columns were designed, constructed, and tested under demands based on CSZ earthquakes. Five of the six test columns were nominally identical to previously tested steel jacket retrofitted columns to allow for comparison between the two retrofit methods. Detailed test results are provided. Strength degradation in five of the six columns was caused by fatigue fracture of longitudinal reinforcement. The sixth column underwent degradation due to plastic hinging above the jacket. Using experimental results, a model was developed to estimate the load-deformation response and fatigue fracture of longitudinal reinforcement in CFRP jacket retrofitted reinforced concrete column. The model was validated with test data. Single degree of freedom nonlinear time history analyses were conducted using the model. Site-specific Magnitude-9.0 Cascadia Subduction Zone simulated ground motions for western Washington State were used. Fragility relationships that provided the probability of lateral failure were developed for a practical range of bridge column parameters and bridge periods, strengths, and locations.
