Book Instrumentation in Earthquake Seismology

Download or read book Instrumentation in Earthquake Seismology written by Jens Havskov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is unique and comprehensive coverage of modern seismic instrumentation, based on the authors’ practical experience of a quarter-century in seismology and geophysics. Their goal is to provide not only detailed information on the basics of seismic instruments but also to survey equipment on the market, blending this with only the amount of theory needed to understand the basic principles. Seismologists and technicians working with seismological instruments will find here the answers to their practical problems. Instrumentation in Earthquake Seismology is written to be understandable to the broad range of professionals working with seismological instruments and seismic data, whether students, engineers or seismologists. Whether installing seismic stations, networks and arrays, working and calibrating stationary or portable instruments, dealing with response information, or teaching about seismic instruments, professionals and academics now have a practical and authoritative sourcebook. Includes: SEISAN and SEISLOG software systems that are available from http://extras.springer.com and http://www.geo.uib.no/seismo/software/software.html

Book Arrays and Array Methods in Global Seismology

Download or read book Arrays and Array Methods in Global Seismology written by Yu Jeffrey Gu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the increased availability and fidelity of broadband seismic instruments have effectively narrowed the gap between exploration and global seismic applications. Global seismologists are now able to take advantage of high-resolution, often exploration-based, tools to examine rock properties tens to hundreds of kilometers below surface. This book reviews the key assumptions, algorithms and prospects of several important array-based methods in today’s global and regional seismic surveys. A short list of topics includes data migration, PP and SS precursors, Radon transform, mantle triplication, P-to-S and S-to-P converted waves, shear-wave splitting, high-resolution seismic tomography, and ambient-noise interferometry. Each approach is presented in a ‘cookbook’ fashion for easy comparison, implementation and critique by the general readership.

Book Seismic Methods and Applications

Download or read book Seismic Methods and Applications written by Andreas Stark and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written for those who need a solid understanding of the seismic exploration method without difficult mathematics. It is presented in a format that allows one to naturally progress from the underlying physical principles to the actual seismic method. The mathematics needed for the subject is kept as simple as possible; students only need high school physics and mathematics to thoroughly grasp the principles covered. Dr. Stark has developed this text and honed its content with feedback from hundreds of students over nearly two decades of teaching seismic exploration geophysics. This textbook will teach students the principles for the detection of geologic structures, earthquake zones and hazards, resource exploration, and geotechnical engineering. This title is Winner of 2009 Text and Academic Authors Association "Textbook Excellence Award"

Book An Introduction to Seismology Earthquakes and Earth Structure

Download or read book An Introduction to Seismology Earthquakes and Earth Structure written by Seth Stein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes and Earth Structures is an introduction to seismology and its role in the earth sciences, and is written for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. The fundamentals of seismic wave propagation are developed using a physical approach and then applied to show how refraction, reflection, and teleseismic techniques are used to study the structure and thus the composition and evolution of the earth. The book shows how seismic waves are used to study earthquakes and are integrated with other data to investigate the plate tectonic processes that cause earthquakes. Figures, examples, problems, and computer exercises teach students about seismology in a creative and intuitive manner. Necessary mathematical tools including vector and tensor analysis, matrix algebra, Fourier analysis, statistics of errors, signal processing, and data inversion are introduced with many relevant examples. The text also addresses the fundamentals of seismometry and applications of seismology to societal issues. Special attention is paid to help students visualize connections between different topics and view seismology as an integrated science. An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes, and Earth Structure gives an excellent overview for students of geophysics and tectonics, and provides a strong foundation for further studies in seismology. Multidisciplinary examples throughout the text - catering to students in varied disciplines (geology, mineralogy, petrology, physics, etc.). Most up to date book on the market - includes recent seismic events such as the 1999 Earthquakes in Turkey, Greece, and Taiwan). Chapter outlines - each chapter begins with an outline and a list of learning objectives to help students focus and study. Essential math review - an entire section reviews the essential math needed to understand seismology. This can be covered in class or left to students to review as needed. End of chapter problem sets - homework problems that cover the material presented in the chapter. Solutions to all odd numbered problem sets are listed in the back so that students can track their progress. Extensive References - classic references and more current references are listed at the end of each chapter. A set of instructor's resources containing downloadable versions of all the figures in the book, errata and answers to homework problems is available at: http://levee.wustl.edu/seismology/book/. Also available on this website are PowerPoint lecture slides corresponding to the first 5 chapters of the book.

Book LARGE APERTURE SEISMIC ARRAYS

Download or read book LARGE APERTURE SEISMIC ARRAYS written by GENERAL ATRONICS CORP PHILADELPHIA PA. and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes three topics considered during the second quarter of Contract AF 19(628)-5981. Three topics reported on are: The estimation of the spectra of transient signals with additive noise; the theoretical aspects of clustering seismometers in a large aperture seismic array; the results of tests of a revised automatic pP phase detection technique. A method has been devised to estimate the energy density spectra of transient events in such a way that the variance of the spectral estimates produced by additive noise is minimized. The study of clusters shows: Dependence of array S/N performance on cluster spacing; a way in which to determine the amount of clustering possible without S/N degradation depending on noise conditions at the receiving site. Tests with the revised automatic pP detector have shown 100% correct results with surface focus events (6), 83% correct results for earthquakes (12), with the remaining earthquakes producing anomalies. Book excerpt: An earthquake is caused by slip on a fault. However, the slip motion is complex, reflecting the variation in basic physics that governs fault motion in different tectonic environmentslt istheprimarymeansbywhichscientistlearnabout Earth'sdeepinterior, whe- redirectobservationsareimpossible, andhasprovidedmanyofthemostimportantdiscoveri- esregardingthenatureofourplanet. Earthquakes frequently claim hundreds of lives and cause major damage to cities and infrastructures. Earthquakes can be disastrous over a large area in a short time, with casualties in a single earthquake sometimes amounting to hundreds of thousands. For this reason the first serious earthquake studies were primari- ly concerned with the macroseismic effects of earthquakes and the immediate reduction of hazards.
