Book Experimental Techniques in Mineral and Rock Physics

Download or read book Experimental Techniques in Mineral and Rock Physics written by Robert C. Liebermann and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the relation between sonic velocity in sediments and rock lithology is one of the keys to interpreting data from seismic sections or from acoustic logs of sedimentary sequences. Reliable correlations of rock velocity with other petrophysical parameters, such as porosity or density, are essential for calculating impedance models for synthetic seismic sections (BIDDLE et al. , 1992; CAMPBELL and STAFLEU, 1992) or identifying the origin of reflectivity on seismic lines (SELLAMI et al. , 1990; CHRISTENSEN and SZYMANSKI, 1991). Velocity is thus an important parameter for correlating lithological with geophysical data. Recent studies have increased our understanding of elastic rock properties in siliciclastic or shaly sediments. The causes for variations in velocity have been investigated for siliciclastic rocks (VERNIK and NUR, 1992), mixed carbonate siliciclastic sediments (CHRISTENSEN and SZYMANSKI, 1991), synthetic sand-clay mixtures (MARION et aI. , 1992) or claystones (JAPSEN, 1993). The concepts derived from these studies are however only partly applicable in pure carbonates. Carbon ates do not have large compositional variations that are, as is the case in the other sedimentary rocks, responsible for velocity contrasts. Pure carbonates are character ized by the lack of any clay or siliciclastic content, but are mostly produced and deposited on the top or on the slope of isolated or detached carbonate platforms, that have no hinterland as a source of terrigeneous material (WILSON, 1975; EBERLI, 1991).

Book Methods and Applications in Reservoir Geophysics

Download or read book Methods and Applications in Reservoir Geophysics written by David H. Johnston and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reservoir-engineering tutorial discusses issues and data critically important engineers. The geophysics tutorial has explanations of the tools and data in case studies. Then each chapter focuses on a phase of field life: exploration appraisal, development planning, and production optimization. The last chapter explores emerging technologies.

Book Static Corrections for Seismic Reflection Surveys

Download or read book Static Corrections for Seismic Reflection Surveys written by Michael J. G. Cox and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference manual is designed to enable more geophysicists to appreciate static corrections, especially their limitations, their relationship with near-surface geology, and their impact on the quality of final interpreted sections. The book is addressed to those involved in data acquisition (datum static corrections), data processing (datum static and residual static corrections), and interpretation (the impact that unresolved static corrections, especially the long-wavelength or low-spatial-frequency component, have on the interpretation of the final section). Simple explanations of the underlying principles are included in an attempt to remove some of the mystique of static corrections. The principles involved are illustrated with simple models; these are supplemented with many data examples. This book details differences in approaches that must be considered among 2D, 3D, and crooked-line recordings as well as between P-wave and S-wave surveys. Static corrections are shown to be a simplified yet practical approach to modeling the effects of the near surface where a more correct wavefield or raypath-modeled method may not be efficiently undertaken. Chapters cover near-surface topography and geology; computation of datum static corrections; uphole surveys; refraction surveys; static corrections-limitations and effect on seismic data processes; residual static corrections; and interpretation aspects. An extensive index and a large list of references are included.

Book Experimental Rock Deformation The Brittle Field

Download or read book Experimental Rock Deformation The Brittle Field written by M.S. Paterson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-04-20 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this monograph is to present the current knowledge of brittle properties of rocks as determined in laboratory experiments. The principal aspects of brittle behavior are described with special attention to the fundamental physical aspects. Thus, the book provides a useful introduction to the basics of rock properties for engineering and earth science applications. Furthermore, it serves as a guide for graduate students and non specialists by presenting the relevant background material and where it can be found. For the new edition a further chapter has been added, and almost half of the chapters have been extensively revised and the others updated.

  • Pages : 1261 pages

Download or read book Exploration Seismology written by R. E. Sheriff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-08-25 with total page 1261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the completely updated revision of the highly regarded book Exploration Seismology. Available now in one volume, this textbook provides a complete and systematic discussion of exploration seismology. The first part of the book looks at the history of exploration seismology and the theory - developed from the first principles of physics. All aspects of seismic acquisition are then described. The second part of the book goes on to discuss data-processing and interpretation. Applications of seismic exploration to groundwater, environmental and reservoir geophysics are also included. The book is designed to give a comprehensive up-to-date picture of the applications of seismology. Exploration Seismology's comprehensiveness makes it suitable as a text for undergraduate courses for geologists, geophysicists and engineers, as well as a guide and reference work for practising professionals.
