Book Rotuli Parisienses 2 vols

Download or read book Rotuli Parisienses 2 vols written by William J. Courtenay and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 1166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues the edition of the rotuli, or lists of benefice supplications, sent to the papacy by masters, bachelors, and students at the University of Paris in the fourteenth century. It specifically covers the pontificate of the Avignon pope Clement VII (1378-1394). It also contains letters of provision, in abbreviated form, that resulted from those petitions, along with a large number of supplications from individual Parisian scholars either submitted independently or, more frequently, through another sponsor. In contrast to earlier papal beneficial policy, Pope Clement responded favorably to many petitions from students in the faculty of arts at Paris, some of them in the beginning years of their undergraduate education. Thus, in addition to providing important information on Parisian scholars and papal beneficial policy in the early years of the Papal Schism, it documents a portion of the university community otherwise invisible, namely undergraduate students, and reveals the connections between Parisian scholars and social and ecclesiastical patrons at the end of the fourteenth century. The book concludes with an index of the names of scholars and patrons as well as a place-name index locating the parish and collegiate churches mentioned in the texts. Along with the two earlier volumes, this edition represents the largest body of new documentation for the pre-fifteenth century University to appear since the publication of the Chartularium Universitatis Parisiensis at the end of the nineteenth century.

Book The Decline of Infant and Child Mortality

Download or read book The Decline of Infant and Child Mortality written by Carlo A. Corsini and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many changes that have taken place in Western society during the past two centuries, few have been more significant than the steep fall in infant and child mortality. However, the timing and causes of the decline are still poorly understood. While some scholars attribute it to general improvements in living standards, others emphasize the role of social intervention and public health reforms. Written by specialists from several disciplinary fields, the twelve essays in this book break entirely new ground by providing a long-term perspective that challenges some deep-rooted ideas about the European experience of mortality decline and may help explain the forces and causal relationships behind the still tragic incidence of preventable infant and child deaths in many parts of the world today. This book will become a standard work for students and researchers in demography, social and economic history, population geography, and the history of medicine, and it will be of interest to anyone concerned with current debates on the policies to be adopted to curb infant and child mortality in both developed and developing countries.

Book The North Irish Horse in the Great War

Download or read book The North Irish Horse in the Great War written by Phillip Tardif and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sent to France in August 1914, the North Irish Horse (NIH) was the first British reservist regiment to see action Ð at Le Cateau Ð before fighting as rearguard on the long retreat to the outskirts of Paris. Over the next four years they fought with distinction, playing a role in many of the major battles, including Ypres, Somme, Passchendaele and Cambrai, and were heavily involved in the final Advance to Victory.?How fitting that this, the first history of this famous cavalry Regiment's superb record in The Great War, should be published to coincide with the centenary of the conflict. It not only describes the Regiment's actions by squadron but concentrates on the officers and men; their backgrounds, motivation and courageous deeds and sacrifices. The author places the Regiment's achievement in the context of the overall war and reflects on the effect that unfolding political events in Ireland had on the Regiment and its members.?The North Irish Horse in the Great War draws on a wealth of primary source material, much unpublished including war diaries, personal accounts, letters and memoirs. In addition to compiling this long overdue account of the NIH, the author succeeds in painting a valuable picture of The Great War at the fighting end.

Book Concrete Recycling

Download or read book Concrete Recycling written by Francois de Larrard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concrete industry consumes thirty billion tons of aggregate annually, almost all from non-renewable natural sources. Demolition produces a growing amount of materials which are legally usable and readily available. If not used locally they must be transported and landfilled. Also, demolition generally takes place close to new construction sites: recycling promotes shorter transportation distances, a must for improving the overall environmental footprint of the construction world. This book encompasses all aspects of this current trend: How recycled aggregates are obtained and their properties. Improving their quality through phase selection or separation. Incorporating concrete from demolition into the cement production process and the properties of the product obtained. What are the properties of concrete incorporating recycled concrete aggregates at various replacement levels, throughout the lifecycle of the material, from the fresh state to the long-term, including durability and fire. How recycled concrete can be optimised for various uses. How this new structural material can be managed in reinforced concrete construction. Solid experience from a series of experimental sites, and drawing on the Recybéton project, which lasted more than 5 years and gathered about 50 partners (from both academia and industry). Specific issues in recycled concrete quality control. National practices in the most advanced countries, and the main national and European standards. Achieving a sustainable process.
