Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seguin Physiological School for the Training of Children of Arrested Mental Development The nearness of New York with its many pleasures and attractions is one of the most important advantages of the school. The work of teaching these unfortunate little ones is peculiarly exhausting, and in order to avoid the danger of laps ing into that listlessness and perfunctory performance of duty which is fatal to improvement in the child, the teachers must be within reach of recreations such as only large cities can afford. Visits to a metropolis where mental stimulus is inevitable, bring them back from their weekly holiday refreshed and invigorate ed and therefore capable of sustained enthusiasm. Orange, forty minutes' ride from New York, is on the line of the D. L W. Railroad, with stations at Christopher and Barclay Street ferries. There are more than forty trains daily each way. Cabs await every train. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Inventing the Feeble Mind written by James Trent and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pity, disgust, fear, cure, and prevention--all are words that Americans have used to make sense of what today we call intellectual disability. Inventing the Feeble Mind explores the history of this disability from its several identifications over the past 200 years: idiocy, imbecility, feeblemindedness, mental defect, mental deficiency, mental retardation, and most recently intellectual disability. Using institutional records, private correspondence, personal memories, and rare photographs, James Trent argues that the economic vulnerability of intellectually disabled people (and often their families), more than the claims made for their intellectual and social limitations, has shaped meaning, services, and policies in United States history.

Book excerpt: This handbook aims to be a guide to the best private schools of the country. It has been undertaken with the parent especially in mind, but it is hoped that it may be of value to school and college authorities and all others interested in the subject. It is believed that this Handbook is the first volume which attempts a critical and discriminating treatment of the private schools of the country. It is an endeavor to classify the schools on their merits -- at least a step, it is hoped, toward eventual standardization. - Editor's foreword.

Download or read book A Rhetoric of Remnants written by Zosha Stuckey and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the rhetoric in and around the New York State Asylum for Idiots in Syracuse from 1854 to 1884. In the nineteenth century, language, rather than biology, created what we think of as disability. Much of the rhetorical nature of “idiocy,” and even intelligence itself, can be traced to the period when the New York State Asylum for Idiots in Syracuse first opened in 1854—memorialized today as the first public school for people considered “feeble-minded” or “idiotic.” The asylum-school pupil is a monumental example of how education attempts to mold and rehabilitate one’s being. Zosha Stuckey demonstrates how all education is in some way complicit in the urge to normalize. The broad, unstable, and cross-cultural category of “people with disabilities” endures an interesting relationship with rhetoric, education, speaking, and writing. Stuckey demystifies some of that relationship which requires new modes of inquiry and new ways of thinking, and she calls into question many of the assumptions about embodied differences as they relate to pedagogy, history, and public participation. “There is no other single work quite like this one. Stuckey makes an original contribution to rhetorical studies, to disability history, and to a history of special education.” — Cynthia Lewiecki-Wilson, coeditor of Disability and Mothering: Liminal Spaces of Embodied Knowledge
