Book Segregation of Genetically Modified Foods

Download or read book Segregation of Genetically Modified Foods written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Agriculture Committee and published by . This book was released on 2000-03-07 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee believes that it is vital that confusion over GMOs is replaced by rational debate and education so that the market can serve those who actively choose to grow or consumer genetically modified foods, as well as those who choose not to. 'Identity preservation' (IP) is preferred to the term 'segregation'. Segregation means 'keeping crops apart', while IP applies where there is a positive desire to preserve the identity of source of a crop or product and implies traceability, which segregation does not. There is also a distinction to be made between 'non-GM' and 'GM-free': there is not yet a satisfactory definition of GM-free, but once it has been agreed, the Committee expects it to be enforced. The Committee believes that the consumer must be able to choose GM or non-GM foods, by means of labelling backed up by full traceability. The Committee recommends that the separation distances in the Supply Chain Initiative on Modified Agricultural Crops (SCIMAC) guidelines be reviewed if there is clear evidence of cross-pollination taking place. In general, the Committee believes that further research and co-operation between the interested parties should continue; that notification of field trials should be compulsory and that the drawing up of a Code of Practice would help in the building of consumer faith in the transparency and effective of all controls.

This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetically engineered (GE) crops were first introduced commercially in the 1990s. After two decades of production, some groups and individuals remain critical of the technology based on their concerns about possible adverse effects on human health, the environment, and ethical considerations. At the same time, others are concerned that the technology is not reaching its potential to improve human health and the environment because of stringent regulations and reduced public funding to develop products offering more benefits to society. While the debate about these and other questions related to the genetic engineering techniques of the first 20 years goes on, emerging genetic-engineering technologies are adding new complexities to the conversation. Genetically Engineered Crops builds on previous related Academies reports published between 1987 and 2010 by undertaking a retrospective examination of the purported positive and adverse effects of GE crops and to anticipate what emerging genetic-engineering technologies hold for the future. This report indicates where there are uncertainties about the economic, agronomic, health, safety, or other impacts of GE crops and food, and makes recommendations to fill gaps in safety assessments, increase regulatory clarity, and improve innovations in and access to GE technology.

Book Genetically Modified and non Genetically Modified Food Supply Chains

Download or read book Genetically Modified and non Genetically Modified Food Supply Chains written by Yves Bertheau and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 967 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the European Union nations, and other countries including Japan, Australia and Malaysia, it is a legal requirement that food products containing genetically modified organism (GMO) materials are labelled as such in order that customers may make informed purchasing decisions. For manufacturers and consumers to be confident about these assertions, systems must be in place along the entire food chain which support the co-existence of GM and non GM materials whilst maintaining a strict segregation between the two. This book is an output of a European Union-funded project entitled "Co-Extra: GM and non-GM food and feed supply chains: their Co-Existence and Traceability". The objective of this four year project is to provide practical tools and methods for implementing co-existence that will: enable the co-existence of genetically modified (GM) and non-GM crops enable the segregation and tracing of genetically modified organism (GMO) materials and derived products along the food and feed chains anticipate the future expansion of the use of GMOs The project is designed to foster a robustly science-based debate amongst all of the stakeholders involved in the food and feed chains, and the tools will be assessed not only from a technical point of view but with regard to the economic and legal aspects. It also surveys the GMO-related legal regimes and practices that exist in and beyond the EU. This book examines the practical tools and methods available to implement the co-existence and traceability of GM and non-GM food materials along the entire food and feed chains, as demanded by consumers and by legislation in force in the EU and elsewhere. GM and Non-GM Supply Foods is a source of valuable information for food manufacturers, food research institutions and regulatory bodies internationally.

Book The Future of Genetically Modified Crops

Download or read book The Future of Genetically Modified Crops written by Felicia Wu and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2004-08-13 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is now on the cusp of a new agricultural revolution, the so-called Gene Revolution, in which genetically modified (GM) crops are tailored to address chronic agricultural problems in certain regions of the world. This monograph report investigates the circumstances and processes that can induce and sustain this new agricultural revolution. The authors compare the Green Revolution of the 20th century with the GM crop movement to assess the agricultural, technological, sociological, and political differences between the two movements.

Book Safety of Genetically Engineered Foods

Download or read book Safety of Genetically Engineered Foods written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-07-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assists policymakers in evaluating the appropriate scientific methods for detecting unintended changes in food and assessing the potential for adverse health effects from genetically modified products. In this book, the committee recommended that greater scrutiny should be given to foods containing new compounds or unusual amounts of naturally occurring substances, regardless of the method used to create them. The book offers a framework to guide federal agencies in selecting the route of safety assessment. It identifies and recommends several pre- and post-market approaches to guide the assessment of unintended compositional changes that could result from genetically modified foods and research avenues to fill the knowledge gaps.

Book Market Development for Genetically Modified Foods

Download or read book Market Development for Genetically Modified Foods written by V. Santaniello and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002-03-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investment climate for firms producing genetically modified (GM) agricultural products has recently experienced considerable change, with the occurrence of remarkably high rate of farmer acceptance, but considerable consumer resistance. The present system that involves firms developing biotech products, farmers producing the products, food and related agribusiness industrial firms, and consumers of food, is very volatile. This however will soon be affected by changes in reulatory, trade and food safety regimes. This book addresses these key issues and is based on papers presented at the fourth meeting of The International Consortium on Agricultural Biotechnology Research (ICABR), on Economics of Agricultural Biotechnology, held at Ravello, Italy, in August 2000. Organized in four parts, this volume focuses on:Consumer reactions to GM food informationRegulatory issuesFarmer acceptance of biotech productsChanges in industrial organization in life science and food sectors

Book Genetically Modified Organisms and Seed Segregation

Download or read book Genetically Modified Organisms and Seed Segregation written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Agriculture Committee and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2000, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) announced that some of the conventional rapeseed sold by Advanta Seeds UK contained about one per cent genetically modified rapeseed. The seed was sown in 1999 and 2000 in several member states of the EU, including the UK, raising many issues relating to segregation, regulation and testing. The inquiry explored the implications for segregation of the incident with recommendations for improving the procedures for avoiding such incidents in the future.

Book Implications of Genetically Modified Food Technology Policies for Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Implications of Genetically Modified Food Technology Policies for Sub Saharan Africa written by Kym Anderson and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The first generation of genetically modified (GM) crop varieties sought to increase farmer profitability through cost reductions or higher yields. The next generation of GM food research is focusing also on breeding for attributes of interest to consumers, beginning with golden rice, which has been genetically engineered to contain a higher level of vitamin A and thereby boost the health of unskilled laborers in developing countries. Anderson and Jackson analyze empirically the potential economic effects of adopting both types of innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). They do so using the global economywide computable general equilibrium model known as GTAP. The results suggest that the welfare gains are potentially very large, especially from nutritionally enhanced GM wheat and rice, and that contrary to the claims of numerous interests those estimated benefits are diminished only slightly by the presence of the European Union's current barriers to imports of GM foods. In particular, if SSA countries impose bans on GM crop imports in an attempt to maintain access to EU markets for non-GM products, the loss to domestic consumers due to that protectionism boost to SSA farmers is far more than the small economic gain for these farmers from greater market access to the EU. This paper a product of the Trade Team, Development Research Group is part of a larger effort in the group to better understand the contributions of both new technologies and discriminatory trade policies to economic welfare of different groups in developing countries"--World Bank web site.
