Book Segmentation et reconnaissance en ligne de mots manuscrits On line segmentation and recognition of handwriting words

Download or read book Segmentation et reconnaissance en ligne de mots manuscrits On line segmentation and recognition of handwriting words written by Sophie Bercu and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The cursive handwriting recognition is actually expanding. The first part of this report gives a general presentation of this research area that include two modules: the Preprocessing wich [sic] encodes the written signal and the word Recognition. In our study, the first module introduces through a new simple and robuste [sic] description of the cursive handwriting in terms of loop, cusp, hump and the writing direction. This description that takes into account writing mecanisms [sic], allows to integrate a large number of variations. The preprocessing consists then, after smothing [sic] and filtering the initial signal, to provide a sequence of primitives like loop, cusp and hump. This encoding reduces the information amount by a factor of one hundred. The word training and recognition are done using a statistical model based on Hiden [sic] Markov Model. A stochastic network combining several a priori knowledge sources describes exhaustively the whole application (recognition of the words un, deux ..., dix). The recognition reaches 98.6% in mono-scriptor mode."

Book Graph based Segmentation of Letters in Handwriting Words with Lucas Kanade Template Warping

Download or read book Graph based Segmentation of Letters in Handwriting Words with Lucas Kanade Template Warping written by Clara Sansalvadó Carbonés and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handwriting Character Recognition (HCR) is the task of detecting and recognizing characters or symbols in a handwritten material, captured by some physical device. This thesis develops a new tool of HCR for a particular context in which the input text in the handwritten sources is known a priori since it results from a dictation task. We also assume in this work that the beginning and the end of the words have been identified. In contrast to previous related works, the objective of this method is to determine the segmentation of the words into letters instead of aiming to decode its content. We work with handwriting data recorded by a pressure-sensitive touchscreen device. We reconstruct an image of the handwritten contents and compute its distance transform. Our major contribution is to combine template matching techniques with graph theory to identify the letters on the processed image. Specifically, we first warp reference letter templates using the Lucas-Kanade optimization algorithm. In a second step, we consider that each warped template can be translated locally, and build a graph that connects all possible displacements of consecutive letters. Costs of edges in the graph account for (i) the Normalized Cross Correlation between each translated template and the word to segment and (ii) the distance between the end of a template and the beginning of the next one; mainly given by the sequential order of the letters in the word. The segmented solution is obtained on the graph representation by means of the Dijkstra shortest-path algorithm. The shortest-path solution jointly optimizes the similarity of the handwritten letters with warped templates and optimizes the spatial coherence between the letters. This method is designed to be robust in front of a high degree of variability in the handwriting style. Doing so, we want to make it applicable to segment handwritten words from children who are still acquiring handwriting skills; especially to make it applicable to handwritten words from children with dyslexia, whose writing performance at young ages is remarkably poorer.

Book From Pixels to Features III

Download or read book From Pixels to Features III written by Sebastiano Impedovo and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1992 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume deal specifically with the problem of handwriting recognition and the new frontiers of research in the scientific community - including the significance of linguistic and contextual information in handwriting recognition and for adaptive preprocessing and postprocessing. Also addressed are problems related to human and computer behaviour in recognition. The aim of this book is not only to point out the state-of-the-art and the frontiers in the field of handwriting recognition, but also to stimulate research and ideas in the fields of design and implementation of on-line and off-line systems that recognize isolated and connected handwritten characters, words and signatures."

Book Script Independent Text Line Segmentation in Freestyle Handwritten Documents

Download or read book Script Independent Text Line Segmentation in Freestyle Handwritten Documents written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text line segmentation in freestyle handwritten documents remains an open document analysis problem. Curvilinear text lines and small gaps between neighboring text lines present a challenge to algorithms developed for machine printed or hand-printed documents. In this paper, we propose a novel approach based on density estimation and a state-of-the-art image segmentation technique, the level set method. From an input document image, we estimate a probability map, where each element represents the probability that the underlying pixel belongs to a text line. The level set method is then exploited to determine the boundary of neighboring text lines by evolving an initial estimate. Unlike most connected component based methods, the proposed algorithm does not use any script-specific knowledge. Extensive quantitative experiments on freestyle handwritten documents with diverse scripts, such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Hindi, demonstrate that our algorithm consistently outperforms previous methods. Further experiments show the proposed algorithm is robust to scale change, rotation, and noise.

Book Word Segmentation Algorithm Based on Recognition of Letter Features

Download or read book Word Segmentation Algorithm Based on Recognition of Letter Features written by David V. Sobota and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis was to develop a computer algorithm to segment letters in a word so that pattern recognition techniques such as two dimensional Fourier Transforms could be used to recognize the individual letters. This study did not intend to cover various pattern recognition techniques but, as the algorithms developed letter features were recognized to gather information or clues on adjacent touching letters to decide on possible segmentation locations. This study was limited to the segmentation of lower case letters in the English alphabet excluding stylized print and italic print. Lower case print was chosen because it represents the worst case task for a segmentation algorithm. Two adjacent lower case letters often look like a third lower case letter. However in upper case letters similar occurrences are rare. Hand printed touching letters were selected to demonstrate the validity of the algorithm. Keywords: reading machines; character recognition. (Author).
