Les modèles déformables sont actuellement des approches de segmentation très populaires et sont toujours en plein évolution. Ils sont largement utilisés dans de nombreux domaines. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, notre intérêt s'est porté dans un premier lieu, à la comparaison qualitative et quantitative des performances de huit modèles déformables, représentatifs de l'état de l'art actuel du domaine. L'étude comparative a porté sur des images de synthèse et sur des images réelles. Nous avons pris le soin de construire une base d'images de synthèse dont chacune présentant une difficulté typique, en simulant une dégradation particulière. Cela permet l'étude et l'analyse des qualités, des faiblesses et des limitations d'une approche donnée. Les résultats de comparaison sont une aide précieuse aux utilisateurs qu'en au choix d'un algorithme donné pour résoudre une problématique particulière de segmentation. Dans un second temps, nous avons proposé des améliorations de deux des modèles étudiés afin de pallier à certaines de leurs limitations. Ainsi nous avons proposé une modification de la fonction de détection de contour pour permettre au modèle de Li de segmenter avec succès des objets avec des angles très aigus et une modification majeur de la prise en compte de l'a priori de forme dans le modèle de Tsai. En effet, notre approche possède un compromis entre l'a priori et le terme d'attache aux données, donnant ainsi plus de flexibilité d'une part, et utilise l'ACP à noyau pour l'apprentissage et la modélisation de l'a priori de forme, offrant ainsi une augmentation non négligeable de l'impact de la prise en compte de cette a priori sur le résultat de la segmentation d'autre part.

Book excerpt: Des progrès techniques récents ont permis la mise en oeuvre de capteurs capables de caractériser une scène par un ensemble d'images appelé image multicomposantes (couleur, multispectrale et multisource ou multiprotocole). Les algorithmes de traitement développés en segmentation pour les images monocomposantes ne sont pas directement applicables aux images multicomposantes en raison de leur caractère vectoriel. Dans la littérature, la plupart des travaux s'appuient sur la segmentation d'images multicomposantes par analyse d'histogrammes marginaux en faisant fi de la corrélation existante entre les composantes de l'image ou sur des images requantifiées à cause de la difficulté de manipuler les histogrammes multidimensionnels (nD, n étant le nombre de composantes de l'image) dont le volume de données est considérable. Dans un premier temps, nous avons développé une méthode de segmentation d'images multicomposantes (n ≥ 3) à caractère vectoriel, non supervisée et non paramétrique appelée ImSegHier_nD. Elle repose sur une analyse hiérarchique d'histogrammes nD compacts, une structure de données algorithmique permettant de réduire sans perte de données l'espace mémoire occupé par les histogrammes nD classiques. Les modes sont obtenus grâce à la mise en oeuvre d'un algorithme d'étiquetage en composantes connexes (ECC) adapté à ce type d'histogrammes. L'évaluation de la qualité de segmentation d'ImSegHier_nD relativement à K-means a montré qu'en évaluation supervisée notre approche est meilleure que K-means et inversement en évaluation non supervisée. Les cas de moindres performances de ImSegHier_nD au regard des critères étudiés (Levine-Nazif, Zeboudj, Borsotti et Rosenberger) s'expliquent par l'aspect diffus des histogrammes nD et ont été étudiés pour différentes typologies d'histogrammes. Dans un deuxième temps, pour apporter une réponse plus générale à la problématique de la sur-segmentation engendrée par le caractère diffus des histogrammes nD quand n augmente, nous avons proposé un algorithme d'étiquetage en composantes connexes floues (ECCF) dont nous comparons les résultats sur la classification avec une requantification de l'histogramme. Nous aboutissons ainsi à quatre stratégies de segmentation dérivées d'ImSegHier_nD dont nous comparons les résultats sur des images naturelles et des images de synthèse. Enfin, nous avons appliqué ce travail à l'analyse de coupes histologiques de pommes en microscopie optique. Nos résultats ont mis en évidence la différence entre trois variétés de pommes en lien avec des analyses de texture et de fermeté.

Pour implémenter l'algorithme, nous avons élaboré une structure hiérarchique de segmentation à résolutions multiples. Une nouvelle approche de la quantification vectorielle appliquée à la compression d'images et à la détection de textures. Il s'agit d'une généralisation de la quantification vectorielle ou on cherche un ensemble de vecteurs appelés quanta. Book excerpt: During the last decade, many researchers have dedicated their efforts to constructing revolutionary machines and to providing them with forms of artificial intelligence to perform some of the most hazardous, risky or monotonous tasks historically assigned to human beings. Among those machines, mobile robots are undoubtedly at the cutting edge of current research directions. A rough classification of mobile robots can be considered: on the one hand, mobile robots oriented to human-made indoor environments; on the other hand, mobile robots oriented to unstructured outdoor environments, which could include flying oriented robots, space-oriented robots and underwater robots. The most common motion mechanism for surface mobile robots is the wheel-based mechanism, adapted both to flat surfaces, found in human-made environments, and to rough terrain, found in outdoor environments. However, some researchers have reported successful developments with leg-based mobile robots capable of climbing up stairs, although they require further investigation. The research work presented here focuses on wheel-based mobile robots that navigate in human-made indoor environments. The main problems described throughout this book are: Representation and integration of uncertain geometric information by means of the Symmetries and Perturbations Model (SPmodel). This model combines the use of probability theory to represent the imprecision in the location of a geometric element, and the theory of symmetries to represent the partiality due to characteristics of each type of geometric element. A solution to the first location problem, that is, the computation of an estimation for the mobile robot location when the vehicle is completely lost in the environment. The problem is formulated as a search in an interpretation tree using efficient matching algorithms and geometric constraints to reduce the size of the solution space. The book proposes a new probabilistic framework adapted to the problem of simultaneous localization and map building for mobile robots: the Symmetries and Perturbations Map (SPmap). This framework has been experimentally validated by a complete experiment which profited from ground-truth to accurately validate the precision and the appropriateness of the approach. The book emphasizes the generality of the solutions proposed to the different problems and their independence with respect to the exteroceptive sensors mounted on the mobile robot. Theoretical results are complemented by real experiments, where the use of multisensor-based approaches is highlighted.

Book excerpt: Techniques of performing applied mineralogy investigations, and applications and capabilities of recently developed instruments for measuring mineral properties are explored in this book intended for practicing applied mineralogists, students in mineralogy and metallurgy, and mineral processing engineers. The benefits of applied mineralogy are presented by using in-depth applied mineralogy studies on base metal ores, gold ores, porphyry copper ores, iron ores and industrial minerals as examples. The chapter on base metal ores includes a discussion on the effects of liberation, particle sizes and surfaces coatings of Pb, Cu, Fe, Ca and So4- on the recoveries of sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. The chapter on gold discusses various methods of determining the quantities of gold in different minerals, including 'invisible' gold in pyrite and arsenopyrite, so that a balance of the distribution of gold among the minerals can be calculated. This book also discusses the roles of pyrite, oxygen, moisture and bacterial (thiobacillus ferrooxidans) on reactions that produce acidic drainage from tailings piles, and summarizes currently used and proposed methods of remediation of acidic drainage.
