And only the Polarians, using their ancient knowledge and gathering together members of the disparate races, can prevent what could be the end of the world. The Fates, religious icons that contain the world's magic, have begun to disappear, unsettling the natural balance. The Dwarves have been implicated in the disappearance of those kept by the Elves, pushing the two towards yet another war. But the true impact of the theft is only really known by the ancient and reclusive Polarians, and it is nothing less than the possible destruction of the world. Only by gathering together members of each race, and getting them to look beyond their innate prejudice can they find the one piece of magic in the world that could give them any hope of forestalling its destruction.

Book Fate Calculation Experts

Download or read book Fate Calculation Experts written by Geng Li and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-03-10 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having long been stigmatized as an immoral and even illegal “superstition”, the popular practice of divination is experiencing a revival in contemporary China. Fate Calculation Experts explores how diviners attempt to achieve legitimation in a society which identifies strongly with modernity, science, and rationality. As well as associating with modern knowledge production systems, diviners build a positive social image for their occupation via claims to moral authority and appeals to “tradition”. Beyond matters of image management, diviners’ efforts towards legitimation also figure in the social relationships and fundamental cultural values they develop in their practice.

Book Tempting Fate

  • Author : Paul C. Avey
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2019-11-15
  • ISBN : 1501740393
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Tempting Fate written by Paul C. Avey and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would countries without nuclear weapons even think about fighting nuclear-armed opponents? A simple answer is that no one believes nuclear weapons will be used. But that answer fails to consider why nonnuclear state leaders would believe that in the first place. In this superb unpacking of the dynamics of conflict under conditions of nuclear monopoly, Paul C. Avey argues that the costs and benefits of using nuclear weapons create openings that weak nonnuclear actors can exploit. Tempting Fate uses four case studies to show the key strategies available to nonnuclear states: Iraqi decision-making under Saddam Hussein in confrontations with the United States; Egyptian leaders' thinking about the Israeli nuclear arsenal during wars in 1969–70 and 1973; Chinese confrontations with the United States in 1950, 1954, and 1958; and a dispute that never escalated to war, the Soviet-United States tensions between 1946 and 1948 that culminated in the Berlin Blockade. Those strategies include limiting the scope of the conflict, holding chemical and biological weapons in reserve, seeking outside support, and leveraging international non-use norms. Counterintuitively, conventionally weak nonnuclear states are better positioned to pursue these strategies than strong ones, so that wars are unlikely when the nonnuclear state is powerful relative to its nuclear opponent. Avey demonstrates clearly that nuclear weapons cast a definite but limited shadow, and while the world continues to face various nuclear challenges, understanding conflict in nuclear monopoly will remain a pressing concern for analysts and policymakers.

Book The Fate of Africa s Democratic Experiments

Download or read book The Fate of Africa s Democratic Experiments written by Leonardo A. VillalÃ3n and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does Western-style democracy make sense in the various geographic, economic, and social settings of the continent? How far toward democracy have recent liberalization movements gone? In The Fate of Africa's Democratic Experiments, Leonardo A. VillalÃ3n, Peter VonDoepp, and an international group of contributors consider the aftermath, success, failure, and future of the wave of democracy that swept Africa in the early 1990s. In some countries, democratic movements flourished, while in others, democratic success was more circumscribed. This detailed analysis of key political events in countries at the forefront of democratic change -- Benin, Central African Republic, Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, and Zambia -- provides for broadly representative continental and linguistic coverage of directions and prospects for Africa's democracies. The contributors are Michael Chege, John F. Clark, Joshua B. Forrest, Abdourahmane Idrissa, Bruce Magnusson, Carrie Manning, Richard R. Marcus, Andreas Mehler, David J. Simon, Leonardo A. VillalÃ3n, and Peter VonDoepp.
