Book Seeking a Future for the Past

Download or read book Seeking a Future for the Past written by Philipp Demgenski and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2024-02-19 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking a Future for the Past: Space, Power, and Heritage in a Chinese City examines the complexities and changing sociopolitical dynamics of urban renewal in contemporary China. Drawing on ten years of ethnographic fieldwork in the northeastern Chinese city of Qingdao, the book tells the story of the slow, fragmented, and contentious transformation of Dabaodao—an area in the city’s former colonial center—from a place of common homes occupied by the urban poor into a showcase of architectural heritage and site for tourism and consumption. The ethnography provides a nuanced account of the diverse experiences and views of a range of groups involved in shaping, and being shaped, by the urban renewal process—local residents, migrant workers, preservationists, planners, and government officials—foregrounding the voices and experiences of marginal groups, such as migrants in the city. Unpacking structural reasons for urban developmental impasses, it paints a nuanced local picture of urban governance and political practice in contemporary urban China. Seeking a Future for the Past also weighs the positives and negatives of heritage preservation and scrutinizes the meanings and effects of “preservation” on diverse social actors. By zeroing in on the seemingly contradictory yet coexisting processes of urban stagnation and urban destruction, the book reveals the multifaceted challenges that China faces in reforming its urbanization practices and, ultimately, in managing its urban future.

Book Searching for the Future in the Past

Download or read book Searching for the Future in the Past written by Keun-joo Christine Pae and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive and progressive theological and religious perspectives have an important and distinctive contribution to make to an analysis of the critical issues facing women-identified persons in the 21st century. This incisive collection of essays recovers the missing theological voices, grounded in those religious communities and traditions, which gender and sexuality studies often overlook. Feminist theologies have, from their beginnings, aspired to be the communal production of women-identified persons who critically reflect on their experiences in the contexts of culture, social standpoint, religious practices and beliefs, and imagination of the Feminine Divine. Pae and Talvacchia draw from this heritage to engage the critical issues of today to create new perspectives. They create an intellectual and discursive space where feminist theologians in all of their diversity renew and reclaim the rich legacies of the feminist theological tradition through inter-generational, racially diverse, and transnational conversation.

Book The Future of the Past

Download or read book The Future of the Past written by Alexander Stille and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engrossing look at the cultural consequences of technological change and globalization Space radar, infrared photography, carbon dating, DNA analysis, microfilm, digital data bases-we have better technology than ever for studying and preserving the past. And yet the by-products of technology threaten to destroy--in one or two generations--monuments, works of art, and ways of life that have survived thousands of years of hardship and war. This paradox is central to our age. We use the Internet to access and assess infinite amounts of information--but understand less and less of its historical context. Globalization may eventually benefit countries around the world; it will also, almost certainly, lead to the disappearance of hundreds of regional dialects, languages, and whole societies. In The Future of the Past, Alexander Stille takes us on a tour of the past as it exists today and weighs its prospects for tomorrow, from China to Somalia to Washington, D.C. Through incisive portraits of their protagonists, he describes high-tech struggles to save the Great Sphinx and the Ganges; efforts to preserve Latin within the Vatican; the digital glut inside the National Archives, which may have lost more information in the information age than ever before; an oral culture threatened by a "new" technology: writing itself. Wherever it takes him, Stille explores not just the past, but our ideas about the past, how they are changing--and how they will have to change if our past is to have a future.

Book The Little Book of Big Change

Download or read book The Little Book of Big Change written by Amy Johnson and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little changes can make a big, big difference! In The Little Book of Big Change, psychologist Amy Johnson shows you how to rewire your brain and overcome your bad habits—once and for all. No matter what your bad habit is, you have the power to change it. Drawing on a powerful combination of neuroscience and spirituality, this book will show you that you are not your habits. Rather, your habits and addictions are the result of simple brain wiring that is easily reversed. By learning to stop bad habits at the source, you will take charge of your habits and addictions for good. Anything done repeatedly has the potential to form neural circuitry in the brain. In this light, habits and addictions are impersonal brain wiring problems that result from taking your habitual thinking as truth, and acting on that thinking in the form of doing your habit—over and over. This book offers a number of small changes you can make in your everyday life that will help you stop your bad habit in its tracks. If you want to understand the science behind your habit, make the decision to end it, and commit to real, lasting change, this book will help you to finally take charge of your life—once and for all.

Download or read book Photographic Returns written by Shawn Michelle Smith and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Photographic Returns Shawn Michelle Smith traces how historical moments of racial crisis come to be known photographically and how the past continues to inhabit, punctuate, and transform the present through the photographic medium in contemporary art. Smith engages photographs by Rashid Johnson, Sally Mann, Deborah Luster, Lorna Simpson, Jason Lazarus, Carrie Mae Weems, Taryn Simon, and Dawoud Bey, among others. Each of these artists turns to the past—whether by using nineteenth-century techniques to produce images or by re-creating iconic historic photographs—as a way to use history to negotiate the present and to call attention to the unfinished political project of racial justice in the United States. By interrogating their use of photography to recall, revise, and amplify the relationship between racial politics of the past and present, Smith locates a temporal recursivity that is intrinsic to photography, in which images return to haunt the viewer and prompt reflection on the present and an imagination of a more just future.

Book The Past and Future City

Download or read book The Past and Future City written by Stephanie Meeks and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its most basic, historic preservation is about keeping old places alive, in active use, and relevant to the needs of communities today. As cities across America experience a remarkable renaissance, and more and more young, diverse families choose to live, work, and play in historic neighborhoods, the promise and potential of using our older and historic buildings to revitalize our cities is stronger than ever. This urban resurgence is a national phenomenon, boosting cities from Cleveland to Buffalo and Portland to Pittsburgh. Experts offer a range of theories on what is driving the return to the city—from the impact of the recent housing crisis to a desire to be socially engaged, live near work, and reduce automobile use. But there’s also more to it. Time and again, when asked why they moved to the city, people talk about the desire to live somewhere distinctive, to be some place rather than no place. Often these distinguishing urban landmarks are exciting neighborhoods—Miami boasts its Art Deco district, New Orleans the French Quarter. Sometimes, as in the case of Baltimore’s historic rowhouses, the most distinguishing feature is the urban fabric itself. While many aspects of this urban resurgence are a cause for celebration, the changes have also brought to the forefront issues of access, affordable housing, inequality, sustainability, and how we should commemorate difficult history. This book speaks directly to all of these issues. In The Past and Future City, Stephanie Meeks, the president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, describes in detail, and with unique empirical research, the many ways that saving and restoring historic fabric can help a city create thriving neighborhoods, good jobs, and a vibrant economy. She explains the critical importance of preservation for all our communities, the ways the historic preservation field has evolved to embrace the challenges of the twenty-first century, and the innovative work being done in the preservation space now. This book is for anyone who cares about cities, places, and saving America’s diverse stories, in a way that will bring us together and help us better understand our past, present, and future.

Book College Grad Seeks Future

Download or read book College Grad Seeks Future written by Howard R. Greene and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In College Grad Seeks Future, Howard and Matthew Greene will help post-collegians to find their true calling, pursue the field that best fits their talents and passion, and utilize their unique skills to build a career efficiently and effectively. In the coming years, college graduates will have a more difficult time than ever entering the job market. Opportunities in traditional fields are shrinking as the competition increases exponentially. Despite this glaring truth, far too many post-collegians automatically consider the most visible, traditional careers - usually out of confusion, uncertainty, and peer and parental pressures. Fields like law, medicine, and banking (just to name a few) are often overpopulated, and thus extremely competitive for entry level positions. The Greenes explain to readers the highly individualistic nature of choosing a career, the interesting choices that are frequently overlooked, and the imaginative ways in which young adults can identify their goals and take the necessary steps to realize them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the way the Church is "doing church" is the very reason the world is seeing less of Jesus in it every day? Beginning with the biblical basics, Jeff Lockyer walks readers through the underlying theology and practical application of how Southridge Community Church has approached ministry for nearly a quarter century. While providing a fresh approach to ministry, the book stimulates how to think-not what to think. It's written by a local church practitioner for local church practitioners. By providing clarity to the confused, it helps church leaders find their way. By providing practical examples delivered uniquely in multiple church contexts, it supports leaders in finding their own way. And, most of all, by re-framing the operation of the church around fostering full devotion instead of facilitating consumerism, it enables leaders of local churches to reclaim the lifestyle of Jesus among its people. It supports churches and leaders to find their Way-the Way of Jesus.

Book The Future Knowledge Compendium

Download or read book The Future Knowledge Compendium written by Peter Ellyard and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-03 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THRIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY Humans have a unique capability to both understand their situation in the world and to envision and act to realise their aspirations in the emerging world. And most of us would welcome knowing how we can become ever more skilful at both understanding, and shaping the future of, our emerging world, so that we can thrive in it. The 21st century is very different from the 20th century. Globalisation, the greatest economic prosperity uplifting machine humanity has ever invented, and mass education, are combining to sweep humanity into an emerging interdependent global village. It is creating a global educated middle class that will number 5 billion in 2030. In this emerging world, a world where our future prosperity will be increasingly based on metaphysical wealth, on what we know, 20th century nation-first, competitive, win/lose, mindsets and agendas can no longer work. These now yesteryear mindsets will instead undermine our best endeavours, including making our future ever more climate and pandemic safe. Humanity is now beginning to learn that it now has no option but to adopt planet-first, collaborative, win/win values and mindsets, if it wishes to shape our emerging global village so that it can become liveable for all: ever more prosperous, harmonious, inclusive, sustainable, healthy, and secure. Meeting these challenges successfully will require that humanity innovates for itself a new future knowledge curriculum so that it can economically thrive in a sustainable and humane manner. Peter Ellyard has asked the question: what would be the contents of such a curriculum? In The Future Knowledge Compendium: A Curriculum for Thriving in the 21st Century, he has sought to answer this question.
