Book excerpt: The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality. In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.

Book excerpt: "In 1980s India, the Ramsay Brothers and other filmmakers produced a wave of horror movies about soul-sucking witches, knife-wielding psychopaths, and dark-caped vampires. Seeing Things is about the sudden cuts, botched prosthetic effects, continuity errors, and celluloid damage in these movies. Such moments may very well be "failures" of various kinds, but in this book Kartik Nair reads them as clues to the conditions in which the films were once made, censored, and seen, offering a view from below of the world's largest film culture. Combining extensive archival research and original interviews with close readings of landmark films including Purana Mandir, Veerana, and Jaani Dushman, this book tracks the material coordinates of horror cinema's spectral images. In the process, Seeing Things discovers a spectral materiality-one that informs Bombay horror's haunted houses, grotesque bodies, and graphic violence and gives visceral force to our experience of the genre's globally familiar conventions"--

Book Black White and Things

Download or read book Black White and Things written by Robert Frank and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing photographs taken between 1948 and 1952, Black White and Things was in its original form a book hand-crafted by Robert Frank in 1952. Frank made three identical copies designed by Werner Zryd, each with spiral binding and original photographs. Printed for an exhibition at the National Gallery in Washington in 1994, Frank has now redesigned the book. Separated into three categories "black", "white", and "things", which are shaped more by mood than subject matter, the book traces Frank's travels to cities such as Paris, New York, Valencia and St. Louis. In the white section for instance, he brings photographs of vastly different motifs under a single aesthetic umbrella - his first wife reclining with their new-born baby, peasants squatting against a flaking wall in Peru, and a business man strolling past a snowdecked tree in London.

Book Black White Magic The Rationale and Reasoning Behind Things Which Cannot Be Explained

Download or read book Black White Magic The Rationale and Reasoning Behind Things Which Cannot Be Explained written by Dueep Jyot Singh and published by Mendon Cottage Books. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black & White Magic - The Rationale and Reasoning Behind Things Which Cannot Be Explained Table of Contents Introduction Ghosts and Other Supernatural Beings The Voodoo That You Do… Zombies and the Spirit on the Threshold! The Things We Call Miracles Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction The moment you hear somebody whisper, “black magic,” I defy you not to feel a shiver run down your spine, because this is a subject, which has scared and terrified human beings for millenniums. It conjures up visions of evil, bad beings, devils, and evil spirits, already to create mayhem and havoc upon the human world. This book is going to try to explain some of the rationale behind black magic or bad magic, and its counterpart, White Magic or Good Magic. I have said these words, try to explain. Because I cannot explain a large number of supernatural occurrences, which occur periodically in nature, and which have absolutely no scientific explanation. The person of faith calls them miracles. The person of nature calls them natural magic. The person of science calls them chance or coincidence. Superstitious people have other names for such occurrences, fate, kismet, and other such names, coming down the ages through every civilization, to try to explain the inexplicable. That is because human beings have not learned to leave things as they are and need to explain everything which has happened, through scientific or analytical thought. This is the thinking of the so-called intellectual world, which will not leave things as they are, but needs to waste its time in trying to explain why something happens the way it does, and how, and why, and when and where. This book is going to have a number of experiences, which you are going to consider supernatural, and of course for which I have no logical, scientific or rational explanation. That is why, the explanation that I may give it has definitely no scientific proof demanded by researchers of psychic phenomena. There are some powers and forces out there, in other dimensions apart from us, and sometimes the “wall” between them, and our world allows them to escape into our world. And so we are subjected to supposedly supernatural occurrences, which a cynical scientist is going to dismiss as imagination, because he does not believe the evidence right in front of his eyes!
