Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seeing Europe With Famous Authors, Vol. 6 In Hungary there are great quantities of unearthed riches, and not only in the form of gold. These riches are the mineral waters that abound in the country and have been the natural medicine of the people for many years. Water in itself was always worshiped by the Hungarians in the earliest ages, and they have found out through experience for which ailment the different waters may be used. There are numbers of small watering-places in the most primitive state, which are visited by the peasants from far and wide, more especially those that are good for rheumatism. Like all people that work much in the open, the Hungarian in old age feels the aching of his limbs. The Carpathians are full of such baths, some of them quite primitive; others are used more as summer resorts, where the well-to-do town people build their villas; others, again, like Tatra Fured, Tatra Lomniez, Csorba, and many others, have every accommodation and are visited by people from all over Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seeing Europe With Famous Authors, Vol. 7 of 10 Tourist in great numbers now go to Italy, Sicily and Greece Tourists in great numbers now go to Italy by steamers that have Naples and Genoa for ports. By the fast Channel steamers, however, touching at Cherbourg and Havre one may make the trip in less time (rail journey included). In going to Rome, four days could thus be saved; but the expense will be greater - perhaps forty percent. ... "and now, fair Italy! Thou art the garden of the world, the home Of all Art yields, and Nature can decree; Even in thy desert, what is like to thee? Thy very weeds are beautiful, thy waste More rich than other climes' fertility; Thy wreck a glory, and thy ruin graced With an Immaculate charm which can not be defaced." At least four civilizations, and probably five, have dominated Italy; together they cover a period of more than 3,000 years - Pelasgian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman, Italian. Of these the Pelasgian is, in the main, legendary. Next came the Etruscan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The country, during the whole route, is open, well cultivated, occasionally gently undulating, but generally denuded of trees. Many pretty little churches, with delicate spires, peeped out to the right and left during the journey; but the first view of the cathedral of Bayeux put all the others out of my recollection. There is, in fact, no proper approach to this interesting edifice. The western end is suffocated with houses. Here stands the post-office; and with the most unsuspecting frankness, on the part of the owner, I had permission to examine, with my own hands, within doors, every letter - under the expectation that there were some for myself. Nor was I disappointed. But you must come with me to the cathedral, and of course we must enter together at the western front. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seeing Europe With Famous Authors, Vol. 3 of 10: Selected and Edited With Introductions, Etc The tourist bound for France lands either at Cherbourg, Havre, or Boulogne. At Cherbourg, he sees waters in which the "Kearsarge" sank the "Alabama"; at Havre a shelter in which, long before Caesar came to Gaul, ships, with home ports on the Seine, sought safety from the sea; and at Boulogne may recall the invading expedition to England, planned by Napoleon, but which never sailed. From the Roman occupation, many Roman remains have survived in England, but these are far inferior in numbers and in state of preservation to the Roman remains found in France. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seeing Europe With Famous Authors, Vol. 2 of 10 The church itself is an interesting but not remarkable edifice, Old, small, and solidly built in a style common enough in England. Noth ing, however, could be more in keeping with the associations of the scene. The very humility Of the edifice has a property of its own, for anything more magnificent would jar upon the feelings, as the monument in the Park does most decidedly. It was Gray's wish that he might be buried here, near the mother whom he loved so well; otherwise he could hardly have escaped the posthumous misfortune of a tomb in Westminster Abbey or St. Paul's. In such case the world would have missed one of the most charming of associations, and the great poem the most poetical of its features. For surely it was fit that he who sang so touchingly of the dead here Sleeping, should find near them his last resting-place; that when the pleasant toil in libraries was over, the last folio closed by those industrious hands, the last man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seeing Europe With Famous Authors, Vol. 9 Many tourists now enter Spain from Gibraltar; others enter from the north where two routes from Paris are available, one by the western end of the Pyrenees through Biarritz, the other by the eastern end through Perpignan. Phoenicians were in Spain perhaps a thousand years before the Christian era, but the Phoenicians were traders, not colonists. The earliest known settlers were Iberians, followed, about 500 B.C. by Celts. About 240 B.C. came the Carthaginians, but Rome during the Punic Wars expelled them. Eventually Rome conquered the entire peninsula, the Basques of the northwest excepted. It was a grim struggle for Rome, however, and lasted nearly two hundred years. Scipio AEmilianus was the first Roman to subdue any large part of the country. Afterward, Julius Caesar pushed the work still further forward. Thenceforth for two hundred years Rome was mistress of the country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Seeing Europe with Famous Authors, Volume 8 Italy and Greece by Francis Whiting Halsey The great majority of the streets are as narrow as any thoroughfare can well be, where people (even Italian people) are supposed to live and walk about; being mere lanes, with here and there a kind of well, or breathing-place. The houses are immensely high, painted in all sorts of colors, and are in every stage and state of damage, dirt, and lack of repair. They are commonly let off in floors, or flats, like the houses in the old town of Edinburgh, or many houses in Paris.... In the sixteenth century it was navigable as far as Toledo, but the mills upon its banks are now for ever silent; no traffic has deflowered its legendary charms; neither boat nor barge cuts a way along its inactive waters. -from "The Tagus, River of Romance," by Hannah Lynch From the era from a trip to the Continent was rarer but more deeply appreciated comes an enchanting literary travelogue assembled from the hearts and minds of some of the greatest wordsmiths in the English language.
