Book Seeds in Emergencies

Download or read book Seeds in Emergencies written by and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2010 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seed security of small-scale rural households is often put at risk by natural and human-caused disasters. As a consequence, seeds are frequently provided to vulnerable households as part of the emergency response. However, seeds are unlike other inputs such as fertiliser or tools because they are fragile living organisms with specific quality attributes. In addition, crop varieties must be adapted to the targeted agro-ecological zone and meet the preferences of the local households.

Book Cash transfer Programming in Emergencies

Download or read book Cash transfer Programming in Emergencies written by Pantaleo Creti and published by Oxfam. This book was released on 2006 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In emergencies, distributing cash in a targeted manner can often meet people's immediate needs more quickly and appropriately than the direct distribution of commodities such as food aid. Cash gives people choices and thereby preserves their dignity. Commodity distribution may pose logistical problems, takes time, and in the case of food aid, may disrupt local markets if food is actually available within the affected country or region. But among humanitarian agencies there are fears that cash transfers will pose security risks, create inflation, and fail to be used to meet basic needs. In this guide, the first of its kind, Oxfam staff members present the rationale behind cash-transfer programs, considering the arguments for and against cash as an alternative to commodity distribution. They also give guidance on when cash is the most appropriate intervention and how to assess this. Different types of cash intervention are compared--cash grants, vouchers, and cash-for-work--and the guide uses checklists to explain the practical steps involved in implementing them. They draw on the experience of Oxfam and other agencies of operating such programs, including responses to the devastation caused by the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004. The guidelines are primarily intended for NGO personnel: humanitarian program managers, food-security specialists, public-health engineers, finance staff, and logisticians. Policymakers in donor organizations and international agencies will also find them relevant. The sixteen cards contain key elements from the book to explain how to assess whether cash is the most appropriate response to any particular emergency. The cards and the paperback are also available as a set.

Book Restoring Farmers Seed Systems in Disaster Situations

Download or read book Restoring Farmers Seed Systems in Disaster Situations written by FAO and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents the report, case studies and background papers of the International Workshop on Developing Institutional Agreements and Capcity to Assist Farmers in Disaster Situations to Restore Agricultural Systems and Seed Security Activities, held at FAO headquarters in Rome from 3 to 5 November 1998. The workshop was organized by FAO s Seed and Plant Genetic Resources Service under the framework of the FAO/Norway Cooperative Programme. Its objectives were twefold. First, it aimed to develop strategies to improve the capacity of disaster-prone countries to prepare farmer seed systems to minimize the effects of disasters and to promote mechanisms that will enable countries and their rural farming communities to identify, acquire, multiply and deliver seed of locally adapted varieties before, during, and after disasters. Second, the workshop sought to determine mechanisms of collaboration for a continuing partnership among governments and institutions involved in the maintenance or restoration of farmer seed systems, plant genetic resources and seed security after disasters. The main output from the workshop was a strong recommendation that FAO should explore the possibility of supporting the establishment of a Seed Security Consultative Group, under the auspices of FAO, with a broad constituency including all stakeholders involved in efforts to rehabilitate agricultural production systems affected by disaster. This consultative group would coordinate efforts to conserve locally adapted plant genetic resources, to harmonize seed rules and regulations and to disseminate information on lessons learned about strengthening farmer seed systems in disaster-prone regions. Contents Chapter 1: Case Studies; Seed and plant genetic resources restoration in conflict and disaster situations in angola by Elizabeth M Matos; Agricultural recovery and emergency seed restoration in the post disaster situation of angola: world vision international by Claude Nankam; Emergency seed supply in afghanistan by N S Tunwar; Emergency production of high quality seed for war affected area is bosnia and herzegovina by Mona s chaya, Les distribution gratuites d intrants agricoles et les programmes de multiplication de semences au rw anda de 1994 A 1998 by Jan-Francois Gascon; The effects of the rwandan war on crop production, seed security and varietal security: a comparison of two crops by Louise Sperling; Chapter 2: Background Papers; Characterizing disasters by Francois Grunewald; Farmer seed systems by Temba M Musa; Farmer seed systems and disaster by Catherine Longley and Paul Richards; Plant genetic resources and disaster by Catherind Longley and Paul Richards; Plant genetic resources and seed relief by Toby Hobgkin and Murthi Anishetty; Regulatory aspects of seed security by Miels P Louwaars and R Tripp; Seed stocks and seed multiplication in emergency situations by I Sikora, W Fiebig and E Sgaravati; Food and seed assistance in the recovery from crisis by Deborah Hines, S Wickrema and L Van Straaten; Restoration of seed systems and plant genetic resources after disasters: A synthesis of the background papers by Victor N Bushamuka.

Book Quality Declared Seed System

Download or read book Quality Declared Seed System written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality declared seed system, as set out in the FAO Plant Production and Production Paper No. 117 (1993, ISBN 9251032785) has been widely used, particularly by those working in the field of emergency seed supply and as a source of practical information on seed standards for a range of crop species. The system provided an alternative for seed quality assurance, which was less demanding than full seed quality control systems. This publication sets out a revised version, prepared by an expert consultation, which offers a more explicit recognition of the role of national policies and the impact of some recent international obligations on seed provision and a clearer explanation on how quality declared seeds can accommodate local varieties. The list of crops now includes 92 species, of which 21 include open pollinated and hybrids and one includes also a synthetic variety. In making this update, FAO sought to improve seed supplies to farmers and thus to contribute to food security.

Book Seeds on Ice Svalbard and the Global Seed Vault

Download or read book Seeds on Ice Svalbard and the Global Seed Vault written by Cary Fowler and published by Prospecta Press. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable story of the Global Seed Vault--and the valiant effort to save the past and the future of agriculture: Now updated with a new chapter by the author and photos from recent improvements in the facilities. Closer to the North Pole than to the Arctic Circle, on an island in a remote Norwegian archipelago, lies a vast global seed bank buried within a frozen mountain. At the end of a 130-meter long tunnel chiseled out of solid stone is a room filled with humanity's precious treasure, the largest and most diverse seed collection ever assembled: more than a half billion seeds containing the world's most prized crops, a safeguard against catastrophic starvation. The Global Seed Vault, a visionary model of international collaboration, is the brainchild of Cary Fowler, renowned scientist, conservationist, and biodiversity advocate. In SEEDS ON ICE, Fowler tells for the first time the comprehensive inside story of how the "doomsday seed vault" came to be, while the breathtaking photographs offer a stunning guided tour not only of the private vault, but of the windswept beauty and majesty of Svalbard and the enchanting community of people in Longyearbyen. With growing evidence that unchecked climate change will seriously undermine food production and threaten the diversity of crops around the world, SEEDS ON ICE offers a personal and passionate reminder that we shouldn't take our reliance on the world of plants for granted--and that, in a very real sense, the future of the human race rides on this frozen and indispensable biodiversity.

Book The Tao of Vegetable Gardening

Download or read book The Tao of Vegetable Gardening written by Carol Deppe and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tao of Vegetable Gardening explores the practical methods as well as the deeper essence of gardening. In her latest book, groundbreaking garden writer Carol Deppe (The Resilient Gardener, Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties) focuses on some of the most popular home garden vegetables--tomatoes, green beans, peas, and leafy greens--and through them illustrates the key principles and practices that gardeners need to know to successfully plant and grow just about any food crop. Deppe's work has long been inspired and informed by the philosophy and wisdom of Tao Te Ching, the 2,500-year-old work attributed to Chinese sage Lao Tzu and the most translated book in the world after the Bible. The Tao of Vegetable Gardening is organized into chapters that echo fundamental Taoist concepts: Balance, Flexibility, Honoring the Essential Nature (your own and that of your plants), Effortless Effort, Non-Doing, and even Non-Knowing. Yet the book also offers a wealth of specific and valuable garden advice on topics as diverse as: - The Eat-All Greens Garden, a labor- and space-efficient way to provide all the greens a family can eat, freeze, and dry--all on a tiny piece of land suitable for small-scale and urban gardeners. - The growing problem of late blight and the future of heirloom tomatoes--and what gardeners can do to avoid problems, and even create new resistant varieties. - Establishing a Do-It-Yourself Seed Bank, including information on preparing seeds for long-term storage and how to "dehybridize" hybrids. - Twenty-four good places to not plant a tree, and thirty-seven good reasons for not planting various vegetables. Designed for gardeners of all levels, from beginners to experienced growers, The Tao of Vegetable Gardening provides a unique frame of reference: a window to the world of nature, in the garden and in ourselves.
