  • Pages : 446 pages

Download or read book Biology and ecology of weeds written by W. Holzner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds are a fascinating study for specialists, not only because of their economic importance, but also since in this case biology must be combined with history and agriculture (and its economic aspects). Thus, weed scientists may be concerned with pure basic research, concentrating on general aspects, or with applied science, i.e. having a practical orientation. One of the aims of this book is to create a synthesis between these two branches of study and to review the literature of both fields. The agrestals, the weeds of arable land ~ the most important group from an economic point of view ~ was chasen as the main topic. Other weed groups could only be mentioned briefly (e.g. grassland weeds), or superficially (e.g. aquatic weeds), or had to be omitted completely (e.g. ruderals, because they are so heterogeneous), to keep this volume to an acceptable size and price. Nevertheless, nearly all subsections of botanical science have been treated.

Book Seed Dormancy and Germination

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. W. Bradbeer
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-13
  • ISBN : 1468477471
  • Pages : 155 pages

Download or read book Seed Dormancy and Germination written by J. W. Bradbeer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The germination of seeds is a magical event, in which a pinch of dust-like material may give rise to all the power and the beauty of the growing plant. The mechanisms of seed dormancy, of the breaking of seed dormancy and of germination itself continue to remain shrouded in mystery, despite the best efforts of plant scientists. Perhaps we are getting there, but very slowly. This book considers germination and dormancy from the point of view of plant physiology. Plant physiologists attempt to understand the relation ship between plant form and function and to explain, in physical and chemical terms, plant growth and development. The place of germination and dormancy in plant ecophysiology is taken into account with attempts to understand the seed in its 'environment, whether the environment be natural, semi-natural or wholly artificial. In due course plant scientists hope to develop a precise understanding of germination and dormancy in cellular and molecular terms, and therefore there is some biochemistry in this book. Biochemists who wish to learn something about seeds should find this book useful.

Download or read book Plant Science Today Tomorrow written by Dr. Arpita Chatterjee & Dr. swapan Mandal and published by Insta Publishing. This book was released on with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant science is a vast arena in the sphere of life science dealing with many facets of traditional and modern biology. The subject encompasses botany and allied subject matters including taxonomy, phycology, mycology, pathology, microbiology, genetics, pharmacology, paleo studies, ethnobotany, ecology, anatomy, physiology as different diversified braches. Beside these traditional subjects modern research includes biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, nanotechnology, herbal drugs, etc. Though majority of the research and studies of the plant science focus on the land plant, but the economic importance of plant species present in waterbodies cannot be neglected due to the huge growing demands and necessity as well. Moreover, air born microbes are also significant as potential pathogens of different diseases. From the beginning of the twenty‐first century, it has become evident that the environmental issues are posing threat to mankind, mainly due to loss of forest plants. This also results in the biodiversity loss in a broad sense. This book is an effort to cover many modern aspects of plant science as many as possible, in the light of recent trends of researches. Here, the authors expressed their views in different corners of plant science and focused on the recent researches going on in this direction. We hope this book will be helpful for the readers to generate knowledge in the subject area.

Book Urban Landscape Ecology

Download or read book Urban Landscape Ecology written by Robert A. Francis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of cities poses ever-increasing challenges for the natural environment on which they impact and depend, not only within their boundaries but also in surrounding peri-urban areas. Landscape ecology – the study of interactions across space and time between the structure and function of physical, biological and cultural components of landscapes – has a pivotal role to play in identifying sustainable solutions. This book brings together examples of research at the cutting edge of urban landscape ecology across multiple contexts that investigate the state, maintenance and restoration of healthy and functional natural environments across urban and peri-urban landscapes. An explicit focus is on urban landscapes in contrast to other books which have considered urban ecosystems and ecology without specific focus on spatial connections. It integrates research and perspectives from across academia, public and private practitioners of urban conservation, planning and design. It provides a much needed summary of current thinking on how urban landscapes can provide the foundation of sustained economic growth, prospering communities and personal well-being.

Book Atlas of Neolithic plant remains from northern central Europe

Download or read book Atlas of Neolithic plant remains from northern central Europe written by Wiebke Kirleis and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The materiality of plant remains from 36 Neolithic sites of the Linearbandkeramik, Funnel Beaker and Single Grave Culture, and the Dagger groups as uncovered by archaeological excavations in northern central Europe is presented in this atlas to facilitate archaeobotanical investigations by offering photographic references to fossilized charred plant remains and, in some cases, subfossil waterlogged plant remains. The respective archaeological sites are briefly introduced, the plant assemblages shortly evaluated, supported by informations on plant use. Plant lists and new radiocarbon data supplement the volume. The atlas compiles examples of ancient plant remains that were investigated from 2009 to 2019 in three collaborative research programs at Kiel University, SPP1400 ‘Early Monumentality and Social Differentiation', SFB1266 ‘Scales of Transformation: Human-Environmental Interaction in Prehistoric and Archaic Societies', and the Botanical Platform of the Graduate School ‘Human Development in Landscapes' (GSHDL).

Book Hoverflies of Britain and North west Europe
